I think I had the opposite experience.

I fitted pattern wishbones within months of buying a high mileage Omege 7 years ago. After a couple of years they were shot so I fitted (reassuringly expensive) genuine VX wishbones.

As far as I know they were still fine when I traded the car in a couple of weeks ago.

Omega General Help / Re: Little valve at back of head not working
« on: 26 August 2009, 13:31:11 »
I thought its operation was dependent on engine speed & it controlled a flap between the two halves of the plenum at around 4000 rpm :-?.

I think there is another one on the aluminium lump in the plastic air rams behind the radiator.

The other thing it could be is the carbon filter recirculation valve.

Can you post a photo of it?

Omega General Help / Re: Broke down after selling
« on: 05 August 2009, 13:27:14 »
That is all that I got when my crank sensor failed. I fitted a new sensor and it started first turn of the key.

With the faulty sensor the engine management light stayed lit when I was cranking it trying to start it. With the new sensor the light went out as soon as the engine turned over.

The local independent guy with a tech 1 didn't believe me at the time but I did the paperclip test over and over before coughing up £100 for the new sensor. Maybe the newer cars have better fault logging? (mine is 1994)

It seems that faulty sensors will randomly come back to life & then fail again at the most inconvenient moment.

Omega General Help / Re: Alarm problem...

What year is your car?

On my old 1994 Omega I learned to turn the ignition on, wait till most of the dash lights went out, switch off & only then disconnect the battery otherwise the alarm would sound when the battery was reconnected.

Once the alarm had started I could silence it by locking and unlocking the doors with the key fob.

I think it is different with later cars. I will be changing the battery in my 2003 Omega in the next few days so will be watching this thread for advice ::)

If your car has a 'power sounder' I think it contains its own battery so far easier to follow the 'correct' procedure rather than try and cripple it.

Thanks for the repy. Transmission doesnt have to be removed?
Not for camshafts, it would be in the way if you wanted to change the rear crankshaft seal though..............

The link works if you delete the extra space at the end. If you post links in this message board it seems to work better if you use the 'web link' button (or leave the trailing forward slash off the link)

Omega General Help / Re: Climate Control
« on: 25 August 2009, 10:02:57 »
Page 131 in the users manual says:
Residual heat system - When the vehicle is stopped and the ignition off, the heat still in the cooling system can be used to heat the passenger compartment, for example when stopped at a rail crossing.
Press AUTO with the ignition off. (on the climate control panel)

The pump switches off if you turn on the ignition, press OFF or when the heat runs out.

Omega General Help / Re: What is this leaking pipe?
« on: 22 August 2009, 14:45:16 »
I changed the heater matrix on my Carlton (Omega A) (no A/C). On that car the matrix slides out into the drivers footwell once the coolant pipes have been disconnected (held by a single nut & retaining plate). It would have been relatively easy if my car had been an auto and the clutch pedal hadn't been in the way ::)

I think GM stuck to a similar design for the Omega B in which case you are looking at the price of a heater matrix, two new o rings for the coolant pipes and a morning standing on your head in the drivers footwell.

I can't make out the pipe in your photo but...

The a/c evaporator in the cabin has a drain which drips clean(ish) water when the cooling system is working.

If the heater matrix had a leak I assume that it would drip out of the same drain.

Omega General Help / Re: HELP! Radio & MID won't go off
« on: 24 August 2009, 22:47:37 »
I had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago with my last (1994) Omega.

I had just put the dashboard back together after (re)installing the radio when I noticed that the MID backlight wasn't turning off.

With increasing desperation I pulled the radio out a couple more times. At the third attempt it all started working properly. :-?

I can only assume that the backlight comes on because the radio display is asking for a code (or the MID is waiting for the time & date?)

I would guess that you have a loose connection so you might have the problem again sometime. :(

Sounds like the charcoal canister.

(When engine is off this acts as the breather for the fuel tank to prevent fuel fumes from escaping into the atmosphere. The carbon granules inside it absorb fuel fumes. When the engine is running fresh air is drawn through the canister into the inlet manifold and the fuel fumes are released from the carbon and burnt in the engine)

Cylinders numbered from front of engine, bank of cylinders on drivers side is in front of bank on passenger side so 1,3,5 is drivers side (on RHD car).

Omega General Help / Re: Air vent temperatures
« on: 21 August 2009, 19:54:24 »
On my Carlton (Omega A) the temperature was controlled by a mixing flap. IIRC hot air came in at the bottom and cold at the top. The central vents were fed by a duct from the top of the mixing box and there was a cut out in the mixing flap so that when the flap was set to full heat a little cold air still came through so the central vents would be cooler than the other vents when heating. When set to cold all the vents were at the same temperature.

My assumption is that the Omega B carries on with a similar design that results in a little cold air being mixed into the central face vents at all times.

Omega General Help / Re: desperate help needed
« on: 21 August 2009, 17:58:34 »
I have managed it using the Eezibleed in the normal direction but due to the large diameter of the pipe you really need to flush the fluid through to get the air out.

Once I had a working clutch it seemed to improve with use (but that may have been wishful thinking ::))

Oops sorry, forgot where this thread started.

The Laser 3302 kit - the cam locks work fine (but I don't like the colours) ::) I can't comment usefully about the rest of the kit.......
