Bank scam
« on: 06 July 2021, 20:11:18 »

We have a few people on here who like to post up about receiving scam texts and phone calls. I find the whole subject fascinating. Hows this for a doozy:

Yes, very well thought out. The dealer, being a businessman, should have been very wary of a payment into his account from a different person to the buyer. He will end up being the loser.

Yes very clever indeed , you certainly need to have your wits about you but I can see how easily this scam looks genuine.

further down in the Q & A's, it says .... that a way to have stopped this scam dead in its tracks is basically for the bank to add an imformation box regarding this type of transaction - that details what the transaction was for - ie goods services etc If I transfer money on line (Santander), that's exactly what I get eg goods, services, paying family or friend, property etc etc

Yes.....but that's not shown in the recipients account, that's just so the bank can check that you know what you're doing, (or, actually, to try to protect themselves if the wotsit hits the fan). Whoever receives the payment will just get an amount and a name and, possibly, a payee reference.

When I set up a new payee, i.e. my lads student account, I put the reference "mumdad". When he receives any payment I send, this shows up alone with my name. But it's not mandatory to include a reference.

Actually, I'm not even sure if that appears on the recipients account, or just your account for reference.  :-\
But, in the great scheme of things, there will always be people clever enough to circumvent the rules.

Hope you're not on a "suckers list" Ray. Have you opened any dubious links recently?
