Paperclip test ??

went to my car this morning, it started a little longer than normal, went up the road and the engine managment light was on, got round the corner it went off, so my question is how do you perform a paperclip test ? will this fault be logged into system to read it back out ?

Looks like it's back to ebay for a cheapo tech 2, guess this will do the job for my 2001 2.2 facelift

Looks like it's back to ebay for a cheapo tech 2, guess this will do the job for my 2001 2.2 facelift
DBW units (2.2/2.6/3.2) need a code reader...

I wonder if its a P0340 ::)

i have been thinking of investing in a cheapo tech2... I have a dell laptop with a real com port.

Something to treat myself with after uni and travel!

i just like toy's...

in the summer, wash the car, check oil, coolant, tyres, and do a quick fault code read....

Unlike most students i don't go out on the piss every night!

Also no girlfriend  :'( - So that saves me hell of a lot of cash!

Exactly for the cost they are, it will be useful to have just to do a weekly check rather than annoy you!

I think so, been out for dinner with her a few times, been to her flat. She has just moved again. She is now living in Surrey, and works in central London.

I went and saw her at Made in Brunel, her project was very good. She said that she would visit me when I go too...

Its hard to tell what she is thinking (like all women!)

by chance I have figured out my EML problem, it is due to the gas conversion, I have ran now 500 miles purely on gas so the EM has lowered the oxygen sensor reading, therfore when running on the expensive stuff my car complains (and it's not the only one  ;D)


will have to run around for a few miles on petrol to sort it out, but just to note this is only happening as my car runs on a single point LPG conversion

That figures. The petrol ECU doesn't know it's not providing the fuel. Over time it will adapt the fuel map based on sensor readings and its' adjustments may evenually hit the limit because it's not actually controlling the fuelling. Does the LPG system take an input from the Lambda sensor or the fuel injector outputs on the petrol ECU or does it just use a fixed (open loop) mixture?

Another way of clearing it might be to disconnect the battery for a while (or just disconnect the petrol ECU). It depends on the type of non volatile memory used by the ECU but this could well clear the correction values and restore it to defaults.

as far as I know,  a single point takes a feed from the lambda sensor to monitor it's feed, it's a little strange, I start first thing in morning and EML is on, flick to gas it goes out, give it 5 mins switch to petrol and it stays out..... strange little thing, but hey saves me money on running cost's lol

It could be that the strategy for Lambda control is slightly different between the gas system and the petrol system, i.e. it operates over a slightly different load / rev range. This might result in a small part of the fuel map where the petrol ecu thinks it's in closed loop but the gas ecu is not, therefore the corrections for that part of the map go out of range.

It's not a problem except that it might run a bit ropey when you switch back to petrol after using gas for a while but the ECU should re-learn the petrol settings pretty quick.

It might be worth taking it to an LPG specialist. The gas system probably creates a "false" Lambda signal for the petrol ECU when running on gas to keep it happy. Maybe the gas ECU settings can be tweaked to stop it. Then again, the petrol ECU probably won't go into closed loop until it's fully warmed up so why it complains at start-up I'm not sure.
