General Car Chat / My 226,000 mile Omega Elite.......
« on: 27 June 2019, 21:39:53 »
Yet again, she didn't let me down. After a tiny bit of tinkering this afternoon, I now have - Another year's motoring, without any advisories  8) 8) 8)

Apart from the arches, which he described as "cosmetic", the tester said it's "absolutely solid", sounds like a swiss watch, and that I'd be stupid to ever get rid :y

Poor old girl has been sat for a while, but I've just re-insured for a year, and ordered all the bits for a cambelt kit / pump / full service / ATF change, which I will slowly work through over the summer.

The aim, also, this summer, is to get some new rear arch panels put in, and the associated paintwork, so she'll be back to where she was this time only 18 months ago:

I can't be bothered with the time wasters on the well-known-auction-site, so I am offering my recently acquired 3.2 Elite Estate to OOF members, on a scrap basis, and a price to reflect it.

The details:

Index: KV02 DCU

3.2 Elite Estate, first registered on Friday 15th March 2002

MOT valid until 23 April 2020

Around 123,000 / 124,000 miles

Star Silver, I am 99% sure the colour code is Z157 but I need to check this.

Photos

Issues:

1) From the moment I first bought the car, the battery never worked. Once I had driven an hour around the M25, I assumed it would have charged / start alright, but it was dead a a dodo when I stopped for a coffee and tried to drive off again. A jump start got it going, to get me home. I found a battery in my garage, which is only 6 months old, I have charged this up, and it so far seems to be holding a charge fine, for the last few days. For honesty, though - you may need to budget for a new battery (around £45 when ECP have their deals on) as mine was sat discharged, for some time, which kills them off.

2) There is a coolant leak from the top of the Radiator (pictured below). It seems to be a split in the rad. It doesn't empty the header tank at any great rate, and would get you home, but nevertheless the car needs a new radiator, before it can be put into reliable service. You'll also need antifreeze, as I expect it's far too diluted, from top ups.

3) Very significant rust issues, here is a glimpse from the rear:

On the subject of rust, on the very recent MOT, there were advisories for:

A) Offside Front Lower vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced

B) Coil Springs Corroded - all 4

C) Rear Lower suspension component mounting prescribed area corroded but not excessive (both sides)

D) Nearside rear brake pipe corroded

In addition to the corrosion:

4) The Offside rear wheel bearing has play (also advised on the recent MOT). It is not, however, noisy at all.

5) The engine, whilst smooth, is (very) flat. Upon a quick look, the vaccuum pipe that feeds the multi rams, is broken. So you might get lucky. At the moment it's more like a 2.2. It'll cruise at 70+ all day, but I wouldn't overtake in it.

6) The brakes are very poor. There were no mention of them on the MOT, however, they are spongy. Might get away with a fresh fluid bleed.

7) There is a violent shudder upon braking from anything above 55mph.

8) When braking firmly from national speed limit type speeds. the car feels very unstable, and dives all over the place. It also isn't at all tight into corners. Largely to be expected, from a 17 year old barge. In reality, if you were to keep it, you'll want a total suspension overhaul, front and rear.

9) It has an oil leak (also picked up on the recent MOT). You can tell just by looking, that the cam cover gaskets are leaking (both sides)/

Of less importance, but still worthy of mention for honesty:

It really needs a service, especially oil and filter:

I'd suggest a few short oil and filter changes.

There is some damage to the leather:

Wheels are all in poor condition, one looks like it's been half painted

There is no service history

No evidence of any cambelt change, although the aux belt and tensionor look quite new

The auto box isn't nearly as smooth as my Elite (although it's not as such I would say there's a fault). Probably benefit from an ATF change, and a software update.

On the plus points, the engine ticks over smoothly

The tyres are all Avons and seem pretty good

There is a towbar with electrics (not tested those, as I don't tow anything)

Suitable for someone to either -

Use it as a donor car
Drive it until the MOT runs out, and scrap it,
or spend a lot of money and time doing it up.

It would, of course, also be lucrative to break, but again, I Can't be arsed with selling parts off a 17 year old car, to strangers on the internet, for the sake of a few more quid.

Logbook in my name and keys present.

If you're going to turn up, pay, not kick the tyres, not moan that the "paint is faded" etc, you can take it away for £200, which easily represents the value of the wheels/tyres and cats alone.

General Car Chat / Getting out of trouble......
« on: 29 May 2019, 20:10:40 »
I just made this (very rough and ready) youtube video on my phone, to show you all this absolutely incredible, pocked sized device I was given with an Omega Purchase, and what it can actually do, especially when you drive an old barge. I genuinely never, ever believed this would be possible..........

Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't put much hope in it, but, keep it charged up, and it might just get you out of the brown stuff........ :y

Omega General Help / I want to pay someone.......

To sort out the rear arches, on my Elite Saloon, "NXR".

The car has been on the forum for years and is a super example, which sadly has been sat for a few months needing tyres, MOT, and something more important always crops up.

99% of what it needs won't be a problem, but, bodywork is not my thing. Both of the wheels arches are visibly quite rusty (although nowhere near going through) and I know it'll only get worse, and that most home "repairs" just prolong the inevitable.

To cut to the chase, while mechanics I love, bodywork I do not, and body/spraying/welding is not my thing.

Is there a recommended person / place that could do whatever is needed to my rear arches?

I'm not overly bothered about the cost as long as it's not astronomical :y

General Car Chat / What have I turned into??
« on: 23 November 2018, 20:01:32 »
I realised today, that my Omega V6 Cambelt (daily driver, 225,000 miles) is overdue, currently at 57,000 miles. Oh and last time I changed it was, I think, 2013........  :-[ :-[ :-[

Funny how things change. I'd have never let that go a day or a mile over, a few years ago

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / WANTED: V6 Heads x 2
« on: 24 June 2018, 16:56:34 »
Wanted, a pair of heads (3.2, or late 3.0) known to be perfectly straight and in good running order, from a 3.2 or a post 1998 3.0.

Mileage is unimportant as I will be refurbing them.

Only decent priced ones please as it's for a repair I'm doing for a member on a budget. Don't need camshafts, but must have original bearing shells, as these are line bored to the heads.

Cheers
James

I’ve lost BOTH sets of car keys to my Elite.
And my house keys.

I delivered my estate to a nice OOFer last night ( :y )

On my way out I meant to pick up

A) my set of keys (with my door key and elite key on)
B) Both estate keys

Instead I picked up, my bunch, one estate key, and MY spare key

Having dropped off the estate and stayed in a hotel due to missing my last train, I now can not locate my own keys (either set) anywhere.

Big arse :(

General Car Chat / The gold Elite is Cursed
« on: 02 April 2018, 13:13:17 »
As some will know, a few weeks ago I purchased Terbert's nice gold Elite with a view to mechanically saving it from the scrapper, as it had a rotten exhaust, failed balljoint and wouldn't start.

I put a brand new cat back exhaust on, crank sensor, to fix the starting issue, required suspension work, tyre, full cambelt kit last week, and got it a full MOT with no advisories. The purchase cost was £200, exhaust (purchase and fit) £200 - I expect I've spent near on £700. (which isn't a problem and was an informed decision).

I listed it on eBay, with 12 Hi res photos, and a list of all the imperfections and faults I could see, and the auction ended for £920. I was over the moon with that, but the buyer pulled out without turning up, because he didn't have the funds.

I listed it again, and the auction ended for £840. A bit less, but was happy with this. To avoid any upset or disputes, I made it crystal clear on the auction that other peoples opinion of the condition of the car may differ from mine, and therefore, people should satisfy themselves as to the condition prior to bidding.

The chap who won the second auction turned up today, and noticed a couple of things I didn't. For example, some marks on the bumpers, and that the front nearside wing was more dull than the others, indicating it may have been repaired. He also mentioned the exhaust had quite a lot of condensation, and thus was worried about potential head gasket issues (there are none - Omegas have big exhausts and are therefore prone to condensation steam when it's cold).

To be fair, the chap was a nice guy and very pleasant about it, and had come a long way, so I genuinely believe he felt it wasn't as described (I hadn't noticed the dull wing etc  :'( )

In the interests of being reasonable, I gave him £50 towards his fuel, we shook hands and walked away from the deal.

I'm going to advertise it on OOF and probably take a fair hit - win some lose some!

These images are not for "for sale" purposes, as I haven't considered an ad yet - but, particularly those of you who know the car, please feel free to look at them and give me any feedback on how they might be misleading, in order that I don't disappoint anyone else  :'( :'(

I'm genuinely gutted, I pride myself on being decent and honest and especially when it comes to my Vauxhalls, I would never intentionally try and mislead anyone  :(

General Discussion Area / Any linux experts?
« on: 30 March 2018, 19:44:08 »
I am a novice to Linux, and over the last few months I have been teaching myself things.

I've have to start from the very basics with the shell, but I've taught myself about how it handles users, folders/files, permissions. I've learnt about sudo / IPtables / Yum / Firewalld / Apache / and other real basics, I've also managed to download and install some web apps and get them running after editing config files.

I have three VPS's, one on Centos 6.9, one on Centos 7, but the question I have is around my Debian one, running Perl 5.

I have a Perl app that I want to use (nothing forum related) - it becomes available on port 8080 and requires lots of dependencies, which I have identified and installed.

Despite doing this, and despite using "aptitude" to confirm there's nothing missing, I still get an error message when I Try and run the app:

Can't locate AnyEvent/AIO.pm in @INC (you may need to install the AnyEvent::AIO module)

The problem is, I have installed every perl AnyEvent module I can find - but, there is none listed in the repositories that I can find, that matches the above.

Can any clever folk shed any light, please? :y

Omega General Help / Breather Bridge Seals and Cam Gaskets
« on: 20 March 2018, 22:56:51 »
When it warms up outside I'm going to be changing the cam-cover gaskets on my V6, I can see I have an external leak on the passenger side, albeit not a biggie.

Couple of questions if I may please -

1) Genuine GM, is this still the recommendation for gaskets? If not, which ones are folk using and where are they from? Cost isn't an issue, I only want to do the job once.

2) The breathers will need a thorough clean, and I anticipate the breather bridge seal will break when the bridge is removed. Where can these seals be obtained? Dealers are not doing them and I can't find anything online!

Tia :y
