Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Major electrical gremlins
« on: 19 January 2010, 20:46:28 »
Turns out it was all caused by a single fuse taht had blown.  I must have missed it on my initial check.

The fuse that blew seems to be for the hazard lights.  Strange that it took out all those other systems with it.  Glad thats one other thing fixed though

Something new to add to the list of strange goings on with my car.

I did a paperclip test earleir today.  After reading the faults i locked the car up and left it for a few hours.  When i left work i unlocked the car, noticing that the indicators did not flash.  Strange, they did earlier.  I opened the door to find the interior light wasnt working either.  When i put on the ignition the MID came on dimly but flickering.  it had reset itself as well.  The radio was powering up but that was also going on and off.

I drove it home half expecting it to go up in flames, but unfortunately it didnt.

when i got out the car and locked it, i noticed that the MID came back on and stays on.  The car will not deadlock either, only one press of the button works.

Is there anyone out there who has some idea of what the hell is going on???  :o

I was thinking possibly a grounding fault, but why would it affect so many different systems?  Any ideas where to start looking

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Melted Fuse (Fuel Pump)
« on: 15 July 2009, 09:26:57 »
The other day i was checking out the ECU to check what part number it was. When i opened the ECU cover, i noticed the fuel pump relay (brown one) with the 20a fuse mounted next to it.  This fuse was well and truely melted, and i mean melted, the plastic covering was moulded to the fuse holder.  i managed to prise the remains out and fit a new fuse, which seems to be ok.

Im curious why the fuse would have been in that state though?  The car had been getting more difficult to start recently, and on Monday morning i had to crank it over for a long time before it fired up.  Since putting the new fuse in it seems to start up much better, but i really cant see a reason for it being in that state.

Sorry for the essay, but i was wondering if any others have views on it.

Cheers, Pete

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / HID projector wiring
« on: 12 May 2009, 16:24:53 »
I bought a set of HID projector lights to replace the sorry excuse currently fitted to my car.

They didnt come with any wiring.

Am i right in understanding i change my current motors into the lights then just plug in the existing wiring into the plugs on the HID lights.  then just splice in the 2 pin ballast plug into the brown and yellow wires in the main plug

am i missing anything here.  i have a mate telling me i should fit a relay and power the ballasts straight from the battery??

Omega General Help / Re: leaky injector on TD
« on: 09 February 2010, 19:16:15 »
I rekon its more likely to be the leak off pipes than the injector.  If the injector is leaking, then you will see a pool of diesel at the bottom of the injector with bubbles of air escaping from around the thread.

Could possibly be the auxillery belt tensioner.  Try removing the belt and running the engine to rule it out.  If its definately coming from inside the cover it could be the chain guides.

There are more knowlegable people on here than me though, so im sure there will be more suggestions

The strut top mounts as you say are a domed piece of rubber.  There is also a bearing that sits beneath the top mount that needs replacing.

Juddering like that is unlikely to be engine mounts, although possible.  I would be looking at wishbone bushes, bottom balljoint, or the strut top mounts.  Normally from the balljoint or strut tops you would hear a knocking over bumps, but not always.  Wishbone bushes will cause a knock, or a bump steer effect when braking, where the car will wander around a bit.

If you can afford it i would replace the complete wishbones and the topmounts for peace of mind.  The car will need the tracking resetting when either is changed, so worth doing in one go if possible

Getting lift pump out is hard work ,I know from experince, turned out prob was leak off pipes, Thanks to here.

Tell me about it. I had great fun playing around with that last time it broke down.  Both the fuel pipe and the electrical connector had come off mine.

The mpg isnt too bad, but most of the driving i do is at national speeds and motorway, very little town driving, so i would be expecting nearer or over 40.  When i first got the car i managed 600 miles to a tank.

I was wondering how much harm a fuel filter full of diesel magic would cause the fuel pump.  I have heard that putting a small amount of 2 stroke oil into the tank can help with fuel pump lubrication.

Although i will wait and see what readings i get from the sensors that are causing the ecu codes.  Does anone know if the fuel sensor in the pump is replacable, or is it a complete pump replacement?

OK ill give that a go tonight and see what i get.  How long do i need to leave the battery disconnected to reset the ECU.  i want to clear the codes and then see which ones reappear, just to make sure they are recent codes

Cheers mate ill give that a go.  I am guessing the ecu is in the box next to the battery.  If the resistance is not as you have stated what are my options.  if the quantity/position sensor has gone is that new pump time(new engine), or can it be changed without too much hassle?

Quote
code 82 is injector lift sensor (injector no 4), 64 is fuel quantity/position sensor (irc in injection pump)

You can check them at the main ecu plug.

The lift sensor should give you 90-110 ohms  between pins 5 and 12 on the main ecu plug.

The fuel quantity sensor should give you 5.5 - 6.5 ohms between pins 14 and 21 and pins 14 and 39.

Ill give the diesel magic trick a go at the weekend, need to pick up a new filter.

The battery i am not too sure about.  Its the one fitted when i bought the car.  Never had a problem with it, other than when i ran it flat when i had the previous problem with the lift pump becoming disconnected.  After a charge over night i has been fine all through the cold weather.  I may add a new earth between the batter and engine to rule that out of the equation though

I did that when i serviced it, and all my problems seem to have stemmed from then.  I guess it wouldnt hurt to give it another shot.  That way i can check the heater element is fitted correctly as well
