Title: Meriva P.A.S. problems.
Post by: Migv6 le Frog Fan on 21 April 2016, 22:56:02
A colleague at work has a nice little irmscher Meriva, which has a problem with the electric PAS .
It suddenly stops working which is apparently quite unnerving.
They have done a bit of online research and aren't sure whether to get the parts refurbed or buy parts from a breaker, but they have been told whichever option they choose, the various parts will need to be calibrated once fitted (or refitted) to the car.
I presume this would need a tech2 session ?
Anyone have any experience of this ?
Tia.

Pardon my ignorance. Is Meriva PAS simply an electric motor driving an hydraulic pump for PAS to save power or something more complicated?

Its a column mounted motor setup as per pretty much all small platform cars these days.

Have resolved a similar issue on a Corsa C (same setup) by lubricating the sliding collar on the steering column, not to hard to do and worth a try as a starter.

Think there was a post on Mig with some info

Try Marks suggestion but the common failure is due to the torque sensors on the steering shaft coming unbonded, the control unit cant make any sense of the resulting input signals then fails safe and turns the motor off.
This symptom gets progressively worse with time and you start to dread the warning light coming on - usually just as you pitch into a tight roundabout and find you cant turn the wheel anymore.

BBA Reman do an exchange unit for these, think you have to check the variant letter (sticker) on the unit before ordering if you want to get the new one before returning the old.

Not too bad to fit - minor abrasions and bleeding only required.

Oh, and calibration is simply swinging the steering from lock to lock.

Whoooooa hold on a mo. I picked up an 03 meriva with dodgy power steering last year, Phoned Vaux with the reg and they acknowledged there had been a problem with them failing and, providing I was prepared to cover the initial inspection cost,if a fault was found it was likely that it would be replaced gratis, it was and didn't cost me a penny

If it is a Meriva A then contact your dealer as Vauxhall might change it under PGT scheme, you might need FSH ETC though
