Title: Air con compressor.....bugger
Post by: Jimbob on 25 July 2017, 20:41:17
Was swapping out the clutch on the Zafira's air con compressor....

Not the easiest getting the old one off

almost finished putting the new one on and the bolt holding the plate on sheared just before it was done all the way up.

Bugger bugger bugger.

No idea how to get it out, suspect the compressor will have to come off now as access is crap,
or what to do once it is out.

Suspect Ill have to fit a no aircon belt to get me out the crap.

Is the pulley still in position?

If it is youll be fine if not then a non ac belt will be needed

Yup. All in perfect position. Just no bolt holding the end plate on. The plate fits into splines then a bolt goes through the middle.

I didnt realise, just had a look online

Youll need a shorter belt unless you can get a vice grip on it and twist it out

Non air con belt fits just fine.

No need to change anything, the bolt holds the clutch on, the pulley the aux belt runs on is attached to the main compressor casting by a circlip so independent

Given it sheered on tightening up it should come out again, you can un bolt the compressor bolts and with a bit of jiggling position it so the clutch is facing pretty much straight down which gives better access to the bolt (its connected via flexi hoses)

Hard enough doing / undoing the bolt with something to grab. Let alone nothing. As the whole lot spins too.

surely the belt would hold it tight enough for you grip it

Is there any of the bolt protruding from the splined compressor drive shaft (clutch plate removed)?

The bolt secures the clutch plate to the compressor splined drive shaft, the pulley for the aux belt is separate and only connected when the clutch coil is engaged....of course the clutch plate is not on at the moment as the bolt has sheared  :y

Blonde moment, ofcourse it is.

What about wrapping the splines with the mrs marrigold and clamping it with a vicegrip then while holding it use another grip to undo the thread?

Providing you have more than one caveman grip  :D

clutch plate is on, held on, quite tightly, by the splines, just no bolt..
not enough bolt showing to get anything on.

I can engage the air con relay with a diag tool to help stop the movement.

Had another look now the rain is off..

IF I can get the drive plate off, I *MAY* be able to get something on the bolt.
However the drive plate doesnt want to come off, and the old one got too bent in removal than I cant have that happen again.

I started the car, and very annoyingly the fault this was meant to fix is still present, the belt is still jumping, so think either the whole compressor is fubar, or the fault is elsewhere.

To get me back up and running Ill fit an no aircon belt and if that fixes the jumping issue, I know Ill need a new / 2nd hand compressor.

I think ;D

No need to change the belt as already said, the pulley is independent of the clutch fixing

No need to change the belt as already said, the pulley is independent of the clutch fixing

Would fitting a "no air con" belt help solve the belt jumping issue though ?? If it stops jumping the its the aircon pulley out of line .. if it still jumps its a different pulley out of line ??

Or am I being too simple ??  :)

missed the bit about belt....

but Nige says my theory.....£9 belt in hand anyway now....

Short belt fitted....
Car has NEVER been so quiet.

Aux belt tensioner still moves slightly, but not jumping like it was before, or with the replacement clutch.
So all up and running, just with no air con.

How to resolve that is still up for debate, but think a replacement compressor is needed.
Thinking back to when I first got the car, the aircon failed on a long trip with squeels from the compressor, when I had it checked they got no oil out, so wonder if some damage was done back then that has not long started to manifest itself.

The belt jumping is often caused by a seized alternator pulley clutch ,worth checking while you have the belt off :y
