As some will know, a few weeks ago I purchased Terbert's nice gold Elite with a view to mechanically saving it from the scrapper, as it had a rotten exhaust, failed balljoint and wouldn't start.
I put a brand new cat back exhaust on, crank sensor, to fix the starting issue, required suspension work, tyre, full cambelt kit last week, and got it a full MOT with no advisories. The purchase cost was £200, exhaust (purchase and fit) £200 - I expect I've spent near on £700. (which isn't a problem and was an informed decision).
I listed it on eBay, with 12 Hi res photos, and a list of all the imperfections and faults I could see, and the auction ended for £920. I was over the moon with that, but the buyer pulled out without turning up, because he didn't have the funds.
I listed it again, and the auction ended for £840. A bit less, but was happy with this. To avoid any upset or disputes, I made it crystal clear on the auction that other peoples opinion of the condition of the car may differ from mine, and therefore, people should satisfy themselves as to the condition prior to bidding.
The chap who won the second auction turned up today, and noticed a couple of things I didn't. For example, some marks on the bumpers, and that the front nearside wing was more dull than the others, indicating it may have been repaired. He also mentioned the exhaust had quite a lot of condensation, and thus was worried about potential head gasket issues (there are none - Omegas have big exhausts and are therefore prone to condensation steam when it's cold).
To be fair, the chap was a nice guy and very pleasant about it, and had come a long way, so I genuinely believe he felt it wasn't as described (I hadn't noticed the dull wing etc :'( )
In the interests of being reasonable, I gave him £50 towards his fuel, we shook hands and walked away from the deal.
I'm going to advertise it on OOF and probably take a fair hit - win some lose some!
These images are not for "for sale" purposes, as I haven't considered an ad yet - but, particularly those of you who know the car, please feel free to look at them and give me any feedback on how they might be misleading, in order that I don't disappoint anyone else :'( :'(

I'm genuinely gutted, I pride myself on being decent and honest and especially when it comes to my Vauxhalls, I would never intentionally try and mislead anyone :(

Looks like Kate might get a bargain then. ;D
No way would I have paid for the buyers fuel btw. :o
-
It just shows how opinions differ.
The car is probably over 18 years old!! It runs like a sewing machine, and for it's age I think is presentable enough.
I'm not sure what more you could get for £840 - especially with a full MOT, no advisories, and cambelt kit just done for good measure :-\

And that's exactly what I would have told the buyer, before waving him on his way.

Looks a good car to me & for £840 with all that work done I would have been more than happy. Very generous paying him fuel money I wouldn't have.

I agree with the scouser. You may be slightly 'too much of a gentleman' James. Much like myself in that respect. :)
-
I agree . what do people expect for less than a grand
an 18 year old car by nature has been outside and used and has aged
the fact you did the cam belt kit ,zorst and moted it is a massive plus to a buyer
vauxhall cars over fuel on start up and need a good drive to get water out the zorst
(i note the last astra G estate back box i purchase had a tiny machined hole in the bottom, with a label saying it was to allow
water to drain )
the dull wing may have seen fresh paint, or simply had some polish or chemical disagreement in the past
had the seller t cut it and polish it ,it would probably not be noticeable, or buy a wing ,cheap enough, bolt on.
maybe he'll buy a brand new car and be happy :P
BIG problem now is that ebay don't allow you to pass on contact info until after an item is sold >:(
who in their right mind is going to buy a car sight unseen without hearing the engine, test drive etc :-\
ebay have made this rule because many where selling outside of ebay and they where not getting their big fat selling fee :'(

Only thing I can see is in picture three, the drivers door looks slightly darker than the rest.
Problem is, paintwork looks very different in the flesh to a photo.

Stood looking out the window now, that's not apparent.
I've just re-insured the car, I'll use it for say 500 miles to run the dog about in, before I consider selling it again - just as some form of evidence that there's nothing wrong with the head gasket (They are multi layer steel, they just don't fail).
-
Your alternator has some ally corrosion, I'd have walked at that point ;D
I hate ebay buyers too !

Terbert repainted a wing due to a scratch iirc...
We all know that Omegas steam when cold, yet apparently Terry's 2.2 has a failed headgasket ???
Autotrader is a far more efficient way to sell a decent car, and it's free for upto 5 pictures...

2.2 headgasket is reasonably common, not on the v6 though

Plus you have essential equipment missing from the photos James :o
no green little magic tree air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror
how did it passed an mot without one ?
-
Really makes you wonder what people expect for their money if you ran it for 12 months it works out at £70 a month, cheap motoring in my mind.
-
I really can't see the "buyer"getting anything better for that money.
-
Could be that he hadn,t really got the funds and was looking for an excuse to renege on the deal by being pernickety. You,re a gent James. :y
-
Last person that did that to me lost £150... :-X
-
Just been out for a 50 mile run
Pulls like a train on all 6, nothing visible out the back from the point I got to the bottom of my road onwards, no excess cooling system pressure, and, the levels haven’t moved ::)

So sorry to see you are having problems with the estate. Al is right, I painted the top of the nearside wing, and gold is a bitch to match. There was a tiny mark where a flippin' fly landed on it before it was dry., So I never bothered to really polish it, intending to redo it sometime. No other work was done to any bodywork whilst I owned it.
I can't see that the HG has gone....never ever had any symptoms that suggested that. Always driven sedately, except for the spirited run around Brackley by TB.
Had I not been in a depressed state of mind with my shoulder problem, I would have put an exhaust on. The Belt was only two years old and a few thousand miles old. A new crankshaft sensor was on the cards to do. Then MOT. If my MOT man had failed it on that joint, I would have repaired it, and kept the car until whenever.

Tony, I have zero complaint with the car, or with you. At all. The car is a credit to you
My post is about eBay / people’s expectations

I’ve just sent Kate my number.
I’d rather take a hit than re list on eBay :y

Kate? That'll be some hit ;D

Thanks James, I am like you, and would not knowingly rip anyone off. The £200 original price tag, was, reached with the scrap value in mind, so if not repairable, no major loss would be achieved. Also knowing, that if repaired, you could hopefully pass it on for a small gain.
I hope your luck changes with it. :y

less than 20 back then ;)
keeps going up though :)
I offer my sincere apologies to James if he is offended by comment :-[
I could send him a pound shop air freshener by way of apology
(can't afford a genuine magic tree freshener ,due to me recently purchasing a ̶m̶o̶n̶e̶y̶p̶i̶t̶ omega)

That's being overly picky for a 18 year old car.
Being more concerned about a couple of minor cosmetic issues VS the car being solid mechanically shows the guy to be a bit of a twonk.
I paid that 5 years ago for mine, and every panel has a dink or scratch! But it was low mileage and mechanically solid, and the interior was very good. And I wanted a car I could park anywhere and not worry about it.
I can never understand how someone can expect to pay less than a grand for an 18 year old car, yet want it in perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition. If you want a perfect car, buy a bloody new one and pay many times the price.
I saw yours on ebay and thought it looked nice, and was impressed by the very in-depth and honest description, then realised it was yours!
-
Having been without an Omega for a few years I have been looking for a replacement estate. I had put your add in my watch list and was very impressed with the description. Also knowing your reputation on this forum I would buy with confidence from you, It just goes to show how stupid some people on Ebay are, good luck with the sale.
-
I would have been round yours with the money double quick if I had won it as my current car needs a lot of work and I cant really justify spending the money or effort on it. and i'd rather buy one that has been looked after and had a new MOT put on it by someone who knows what they're doing than the usual cowboys I come up against.

Send me a pm, lets talk.
£700 will take it for an oof member. I break even and someone gets a good car :y
-
Hi James. You have a PM.
-
Hi James, Did you get my PM?. because when I checked my messages it said that I haven't sent one???.
Cheers
Neil.
-
I'm not sure mate, but if you got mine, it's available for the cost of my train fare :y
-
How much would that be?
-
Hi James, I've sent you another PM. hopefully its in your messages. and I never got your message either?.
Cheers
Neil.

Some people want the moon on a stick James. I just wish I'd seen your Omega before I'd bought mine. I'd definitely have paid your asking price as I've probably already spent a similar amount on buying mine and the new parts for itand I've yet to do the cambelt, change the gearbox oil and fit a tow bar yet!
I hope it goes to a good home on here!
