Title: Rear track rods help
Post by: Webby the Bear on 29 November 2018, 18:14:49
Hi guys

Just gone to purchase some new rear track rods for the omega. Carparts4less were selling them at £60 each in Lemforder. However they’re out of stock.

I’ve tried heat on mine and the adjustment rod still won’t budge. Anyone got two (that actually move lol) that they’d like to sell me?

Don't be gentle with the heat, get em red roar and then spin them out, drop hot bits into bucket of waste oil and leave to cool down, then re-assemble with bucket loads of copperslip.

For gods sake buy them before 29th March when we leave the EU with No Deal, as they'll cost you twice as much when sterling crashes, they'll be stuck in a customs shed somewhere for about 2 years and who knows what tariffs HMRC will charge Omega enthusiasts!  :D  ;D

Right. Everything I need is on order 😄😄😄

When I align everything I am going to go all pro... do WIM stick weight on the drivers seat when they do the alignment? If so any idea how much? I’ve got 75kg (or pounds) somewhere in the dark vagueness that’s my memory 😄

WIM don't weight car, and their settings take that into account.

One silly question here.
If the revised settings from wim have been worked out as the settings to use ,is this to allow for settling of springs etc as the cars age or is it because Vauxhall’s original settings (even if in middle of allowable range)were totally wrong to start with?.
If it’s just to allow for settling then what is recommended if car is at proper height.ie new springs etc.original gm settings or wim settings ?

Set a car up perfect once.
Measure the settings with the car loaded and on the deck. Record the settings as a base.
Lift the car at one end.
Remeasure the geometry and record as setting.
Repeat for rear.
Set next car with wheels off the deck.
Set onto deck and cross check against original car.
Tweak as required.

Using computer driven gear is really handy for this as you can set all four wheels to spot on, even if they have no weight on them.  :y

Just out of interest, why would you jack the car off its wheels to make any of the adjustments? The only one I can see any reason to do that way is the front castor, and does anyone actually adjust that?

Yes, I think Tony Bones adds a small amount of castor to compensate for road camber.

A guide is always good, no matter how simple.  If only to show the next person how simple, even if they lack experience/confidence ;)

Post in Test, use whatever picture service suits, then nudge that Jimbob fella. He'll then move it to right area, add it to indexes, and move the images to OOF's own servers.

Agreed, it is sometimes difficult to remember that some people have never even picked up a spanner, and if OOF can convince even those that car repair is within the realm of - virtually - anyone, it will be a bonus. :y

It's worth mentioning that you should make the new ones the same length as the old ones to give a good start on the wheel alignment.

Nah, sod the lot of ya, especially that fugly Gollum character 😬😬😬😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

So all fitted. Fronts fitted also. My own initial alignment done. Rear toe is now in the green with a thrust angle of zero 👍 need to adjust front camber but didn’t have time. Looking forward to seeing the results when I get my new tyres 😄😄😄

I will have you know that I am the best looking troll in the whole interweb :P

In the green... phhhttt ::) Joking aside, rear track and camber are a joint adjustment, so broadly similar side to side and zero thrust are about as much as the back end can be set to :y

Front end camber is 1 degree, 10 minutes and toe in 3 minutes and the car will appreciate them being identical side to side. once done, double check that the thrust angle is still zero :y

When it comes to the Omega, all you need to know is that green is a colour, not a measurement... ;)

Trust me mate I have been told off about being “in the green “ before.

This was just a quick get me home set up. When my new tyres are on I’ll be setting rears to what I have now. And fronts bang on 1’ 10 camber and 0’ 05 toe. I’m hoping I can give the local tyre shop 20 notes to borrow their hunter set up as it’s so much easier to use than our Hoffman
