Title: Surrey/Hampshire Meet
Post by: Gaffers on 29 October 2009, 09:48:01
I have started a new thread to reignite the interest.  I have spoken to the chap who has invited me down next week to have a look.  It would be best if I went with a few dates in mind so please indicate which dates you can make.

Remember there will be house rules and I will need everybodies name and address before hand otherwise you will not be allowed entry.  This is my boss' boss doing a favour for me so I may ask for a contribution towards a bottle of champers as a thank you to him, should be no more than a couple of quid per person.

I also suggest we go to a local curry house afterwards.  I know a few but new suggestions are always welcome!

Not going to name names in public, but there is one place (in the Shot) where you can behave pretty much the way you could 25 years ago.

This means you can be slightly "risque" and no-one gets worried.
This means you can smoke inside and no-one gets worried.
This means you can do pretty much anything, PROVIDING you aren't pissing on someone else's camp fire...and it will be considered acceptable.

Now I don't know about anyone else, but that sounds like a f**king nice chilled out night to me.

Right!  We're on!

I am going to go for the most popular which was Sat 14th November.  I have spoken to the chap and he first showed me a spot which was full of bikes and not very suitable, 2 cars max at a time under cover.  At the other end of camp there is a run-down but usable building with room for a dozen vehicles under cover.  There is no electricity or lighting but its a long building with large doors all along one side.  I can get some portable lights that would light up inside quite nicely and it will need a little prep in the form of sweeping and clearing of a few shrubs.

To the front is plenty of space for another dozen vehicles and we are free to use BBQs etc, although we are able to the on-site restaurant which will cost a couple of quid for a full slap-up brunch!

So if you want to attend PM with your full name and address and I will PM you closer to the time with directions and instructions.  You will need photo ID to get in and it would help if you have not been in trouble with the police recently, if you let me know if you have and I will be able to assess it beforehand.

We will need your own tools and some portable lighting would be necessary for working underneath as I am not sure how strong the lighting I will be bringing is.

I just hope one of the local admins could come down with a Tech2.  I have a locking kit, axel stands, jacks and various tools.  I am competant with changing timing belts, oil coolers, wishbones, thermostats, drop links, disks and pads.  When you PM if you could state what tools and skills you will be bringing and I will add to the thread.

I must add also I will be asking for a couple of quid donation from everyone on the day to buy the boss' boss a bottle champers to say thank you.  Just so there are no surprises.

As for numbers I reckon we could easily accomodate for 2 dozen vehicles :y

And Loo-Knee, Ye of little faith 8-)

wahay i can play. :-)
I have some flourescent lights with a cable and 3 pin plug on the end, they plug straight in the wall sockets in the garage. So should be fine with Kevins generator? If i can transport them in the car without braking the tubes? And a basic lead light?

3 ton jack and stands. Air tools and compressor if needed but its not beefy enough for wheel nuts so probably not worth it.

And of course the obligatory halfords pro took kit.

Depends what jobs we are doing i guess. If its all cam belts then wont need all the heavy stuff obviously....?

Yep, fluorescent lighting's good. Not too power hungry.

Never tried running a compressor from the gennie. There's something to try at the weekend. I suspect that'd make it grunt a bit.  ;D

I have the following that needs to be looked at:
- snapped manifold studs - 2 i think (not sure if the head would have to come off)
- very slight coolant leak - not sure hbv or loose pipe
- droplinks checked

I'm just after a diagnosis first and then hopefully i'll know for sure what actually needs to be done. :y

Well, if everyone's bored with no jobs to do... ;)

Change driver's side central locking motor and fit new speaker.

Investigate creaky rear suspension bushes.

Change spark plugs.

I'm sure I can think of some more... ;)

EDIT: Oh, yes. Investigate why my self levelling HIDs occasionally go into "blind everyone" mode.

AIUI, it's the other end - the bracket has come away from the door post on the chassis.

Would be interesting to poke about behind your triangular plate, see the orientation and if mv6 bushes are the same as other models. I suppose they will be?

Investigate creaky rear suspension bushes.

Change spark plugs.

I'm sure I can think of some more... ;)

EDIT: Oh, yes. Investigate why my self levelling HIDs occasionally go into "blind everyone" mode.

Ah, first thought, not a curry house. More of a Tai restaurant. Food tends to be more chilie based. Where as curry is more, er, curry based. If you see what i mean?

But on the other hand, would give a wide range of tastes, as it leans towards chinese. Lemon chicken etc are listed.

Would personally prefer a full on curry house, but i'm sure the menu will cover all tastes at so.Asia.

I know thera are some tai green curry addicts on here. :-)

Yeah, yeah, :-) i'm not playing that game. ;D

I like to enjoy my food, and cant afford a week off work afterwards or burnt holes in the front of my shirt where its been sat in the laundry bin for couplme of days.

Jalfrazy is as hot as i like it. Any hotter and my tongue swells up. Madras is esp bad for some reason, i actually quite like the flavour. Its just doesnt like me.

Lime pickle on the chutney tray is fine. Weird.

URGENT UPDATE!

I have just been called by the manager of the palce where the meet is supposed to take place.  Apparently there is a significant asbestos risk in that building!  :o

I's not just in the ceiling, small parts have fallen off the roof onto the ground.  Even if we use masks there will still be a lot caught up in your clothes etc.

As the weather is due to be shitty use of the compound is not feasible until the summer.  I am very sorry to everyone as I wasnt aware of this problem and I dont want people getting ill, asbestosis is not a nice thing to have.

Apologies to all who were coming down.  I am absolutely gutted.  :'( :'(

We can use the compound when the weather gets better but until then.....

Title: Re: Surrey/Hampshire Meet
Post by: Kevin Wood on 13 November 2009, 15:09:38
Really sorry to hear this.  :( Still, best to be on the safe side. I knew someone who succumbed to asbestos. It's not to be messed with.

My first thoughts were also whether we could find an alternative - even if we can't find a venue to work on cars perhaps we could keep our appointment with the curry house?
