Hi all.

With the replacement Vectra being used for Cornwall and back a few times a month the Omega has been left on the drive untouched for 3 months and it really is time for her to go. Had her advertised elsewhere and only had timewasters so thought it was about time to ask you guys. Even if she's only bought to break (which I'd rather didn't happen but alas she is worth more in bits) I just want her to go to a good home.

Current specifications are:

Engine, suspension and brakes

Mileage currently approx 165,000. Do not let this put you off. This car had never wanted for anything.
2.2 Petrol with a remap and Prins VSi LPG system. (http://www.prinsautogas.com/en/products/vsi_system/vsi_system.html)
K&N panel air filter.
Ported and polished inlet.
Ported and polished throttle body.
New Vauxhall exhaust manifold and gasket.
Custom exhaust built by Cybox Exhausts from the cat back. 2 centre boxes to twin outlets.
New exhaust flexi pipe.
Oil catch tank.
Oil changed between every 5-6000 miles with fully synthetic oil and OEM filters.
New OEM rocker cover gasket.
New OEM cam position sensor.
Head overhauled in the last couple of years.
Head skimmed and gasket replaced late last year.
New HBV valve fitted.
Recently had a coolant flush and change.
New battery last year.
Drilled discs with standard pads all round. Really will haul it to a stop.
New steering idler.
Standard rear springs with Koni Sport adjustable shock absorbers.
Koni Sport front shock absorbers (NOT FITTED - currently on standard shocks). Koni's were removed because I didn't like the way they made the car feel after a while. Others may like them. They don't have any faults or anything. They will be included.
30mm Weitec lowering springs on the front. Gives the car quite a pointy look.

Edited to add:

The engine does use some oil from time to time. It'll be fine for a few hundred miles then it'll use some. Other times it might not use any for ages. It does not visibly smoke.
Valve stem seals replaced last year.

Body

Debadged grill.
Headlights have been split and painted black inside.
MV6 front bumper with the bottom section under the numberplate (numberplates were replaced for the last MOT) coloured black. Could do with a respray but it's not too bad and never bothered me. And I took this thing to shows!
MV6 tyres in gun metal grey. (could do with a refurb after having tyres fitted)
Brand new tyres all round - 235/45/17 Cooper Zeon CS6 on the front and 245/45/17 Cooper Zeon 2XS on the back. Fronts have covered about 1000 miles and the rear have done about 500.
Door pillar trims and mirror bases wrapped in carbon fibre film.
Pin stripe running around the bonnet and down the length of the car. This is only tape and can easily be removed.
Prodrive rear boot spoiler.
Rear parking sensors.
Headlight washers.
New windscreen fitted by Auto Windscreens.
Small bits of rust on the rear arches. Only just starting to creep round the edges really so a rub down and spray should sort that.
Small dent in the bottom of the drivers side wing where some tit let a trolley roll into it outside B&Q.
Small dent on the bottom of the passenger side rear doors. Slipped off the jack whilst the previous owner was winding the jack up at the side of the M56.

Interior

Cream leather has been fitted. The car used to be black on black inside. The black carpets, dash etc have stayed but the cream seats have been fitted. Quite like the colour contrast.
Sony XAV 622 double DIN headunit fitted when the CCR2006 packed up. Standard speakers.
Previous owner fitted a wood effect dash kit and wrapped certain parts of the interior in carbon fibre. Again if you don't like it, it'll peel off but I did so it stayed!
Rear window blind retro-fitted.
Auto dimming mirror.
Slight tear in the leather - corner of the rear arm rest around the cup holder.

Edited to add:

The airbag light is currently on. I've had it plugged into a diagnostic machine and it's showing high resistance on the drivers airbag squib. A brand new one is about £60 from Vauxhall.

Absolutely loads of history for it. Every owner has looked after it and the guy that owned it before me is a very good friend. I've organised all of the paperwork into date order in a binder which is a couple of inches thick! I think nearly every receipt the car has ever had is in there. The service book is nearly full too and is very detailed on what the car has received over the last few years. The previous owner like me loved this car, it was his baby so everything has been recorded. As said before, don't let the mileage put you off. It's been so well looked after and drives great. Gearbox changes nice and smooth every time. Knock her into sport mode and hit the kickdown and she's off like a rocket.

I'll give her a wash and get some pictures up later on. As I said she's worth way more in bits than a whole car but living in Cornwall and the car being 350 odd miles away I can't leave it outside my mums house as it's broken up. It'll break my heart to do it too.

Looking for £1100 for her. And with that you'll get a near full tank of LPG and 20 quids worth of petrol!

Omega General Help / Firing her up for the first time in 3 months.
« on: 01 November 2012, 10:12:36 »
Hi guys. Long time no see.

Well with the replacement Vectra being used to ferry me to and from Cornwall a couple of times a month (700 mile round trip) the Omega has been left standing outside looking a tad sorry for itself for the past 3 months. I'm back for a week now and I need to get her going because I NEED to sell her. There were no problems with it before I went away so is it just going to be a case of throw the battery back in and start her up or would it be wise to do anything else first?

Cheers.

Off to pick up the new car tomorrow that currently doesn't have any tax on it. So obviously I've got to tax it before I come home. Now to tax it, I'll need the V5 with my new owner details written in, the tax reminder, the MOT certificate and my insurance certificate for it.

That's all isn't it?

Thanks

General Car Chat / Bye bye Omega
« on: 17 July 2012, 20:00:01 »
Well after a short bout of ownership, the Omega is going. Need something with less miles on it to do what it's going to start doing. I'll stick some info up on here in the next few days. It'll break my heart to have to strip it so hope it goes to a good home. It's being replaced with this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-VAUXHALL-VECTRA-1-9CDTI-150-16V-no-swap-px-/200792427974?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D670804897755082363%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26

Know the guy that owns it and I took some of the photos a while back for him. It's a lovely well looked after car.

Omega General Help / LPG plugs
« on: 12 July 2012, 09:07:41 »
Morning all.

Just a quick question really after putting yet another set of plugs in the car yesterday. I'm using GM twin electrode plugs in the car but they're only lasting ~4000 miles before it starts to cough and splutter when accelerating. Fresh plugs and all is fine. This obviously doesn't seem right. How long are other peoples plugs lasting on LPG?

Cheers

Maintenance Guides / Make a leak detecting dye from scratch
« on: 29 June 2012, 15:46:09 »
Hi guys.

Finding leaks from the cooling system can be a real pain in the arse if they're hard to see or you don't know where they're coming from so I decided to make my own dye to add into the cooling system to help track them down. It costs a couple of quid at most but it's free if you've got a couple knocking round!

1 - Acquire yourself 4 or 5 of the fluorescent green highlighter pens. Green will be the most obvious colour to see.
2 - Crack them open over a bowl and you should get a fibre stick like thing in the centre. Pull these out (without spilling!) and place them into a bowl with a litre or so of water.
3 - Leave them to soak for half an hour to 45 minutes. This will wash the dye out of the sticks and into the water. It will be VERY concentrated though. Remove the sticks and squeeze them to drain the last bits out.
4 - Now empty the header tank in the car. This can be done however you like but I just put an empty bowl underneath and pull the hose off the bottom. Once empty, reconnect the hose.
5 - Tip the dye into the cooling bottle and start the car. Leave it to mix with the coolant for at least half an hour. Longer if possible. Take the car for a short drive if you can.
6 - Stop the car and take a look for leaks, ideally using a UV light/black light. UV bulbs can be had for a couple of quid from the internet or some art supply shops. They'll go into one of the older style hand held lights fine. Any leaks should be a glowing green colour.
7 - This one is optional. Add a bottle of coolant system flush to the header tank and leave it in for half an hour. Then do a coolant change as per the other how to guide. It's probably perfectly fine to leave the dye in the system because at the end of the day, it's just ink, however I haven't done this, I've always washed it out again.

Hope this helps someone! More fun than buying a conventional dye too!

Hi guys.

After having the head gasket done ~6000 miles ago the car has started to repeat some bad old habits. When the engine is warm, and the revs held at say 2000 rpm, the water level in the bottle should go down shouldn't it? Currently the level is rising and there's water tracks down the sides of the bottle as if it has pushed some water out. I can't smell fumes in the header tank yet but it does start very rough then clear up when it's cold after idling for a few seconds. I'll try and take a video.

Just thinking that the head gasket has gone again, weeping into a cylinder slightly.

Hi guys.

Might be worth adding this to the how 2 guide for coolant flushing. This is applicable to my 2.2 and may well work with other engines depending on the layout. I did this changing from blue coolant to red coolant so I could tell if it didn't drain the radiator or anything. This just makes life much easier if you can't get the radiator drain plug out. The power of a Roman army wouldn't have budged mine. As usual make sure the engine is only warm at most when you do this. Do it hot at your own risk! You will need a bucket, hosepipe and a 5 litre bottle of antifreeze.

1) Look at the engine from the front. Cast your eyes towards the thermostat and you'll see a thin hose that goes from there across the front of the engine to the throttle body.

2) Get your bucket ready.

3) Unscrew the coolant bottle lid and drop the end of the hose in a little way.

4) Undo the hose where it connects to the throttle body. You might get a little dribble of water out depending on how much is in the throttle body and what the level in the bottle is.

5) Thread the hose backwards so it's in a straight line to the bucket. Tends to sit nicely in front of the bumper. Keep it upright otherwise the water from the thermostat upwards will want to come out. Point it into the bucket.

6) Start the engine and turn the heaters to max.

7) Now go and turn your hose on. You'll only need a dribble because it won't pump out that fast on tickover, just regulate it so it keeps the bottle full without overflowing. Leave it running until the water coming out of the hose runs clear.

8) Once the water runs clear, you need to add the antifreeze mix. It's a 50/50 mix and the 2.2 holds about 6 litres so we need to get 3 litres of coolant into the system.

9) Turn the car off and remove the hose pipe but leave the one from the throttle body pointing into the bucket. Start the car again and let the water bottle empty out. Switch off and fill with coolant.

10) Start up again and let that pump round until you get near the end of the bottle again. You should still be pumping clear water into the bucket.

11) Once you have about 2 and a half litres of coolant in, leave enough space to get another half litre in the bottle and reconnect the hose to the throttle body. Top up the bottle with antifreeze and hey presto, correct level of antifreeze in. It'll mix itself with the water fine.

General Car Chat / The 200BHP 2.2
« on: 09 June 2012, 23:28:47 »
... We will find out Tuesday to see if I've managed it. I loaded the new engine map on before and wow does it fly now. Will speak to A&M Conversions in Deeside to try and book a rolling road slot in on Tuesday.

Fingers crossed!

General Car Chat / Smoke from under the bonnet on first start?
« on: 09 June 2012, 12:40:53 »
Hi guys.

Got a bit of a random one today. Jumped in, shut the door, turned the key and as the car was turning over (as normal, turns over 2 or 3 times then kicks into life) a relatively big cloud of what can only be described as white smoke shot out of the scuttle. The car started fine and ticked over as normal (rough as hell with the cracked manifold) and seemed fine. I lifted the bonnet but couldn't see anything. The car was stone cold - it hadn't been driven since last night.

Any ideas? That worried me slightly to the point of thinking oh balls, the car's on fire.

Hi guys.

Firstly, has anyone done this? The car didn't come with the Bose equipment and it wasn't retrofitted, the parcel shelf with the blind just happened to come from a Bose equipped car so I already have bits there. I've been looking out for 1 or 2 small subs that will fit in the spaces. I believe they're 6" holes so I'd need to make up some adapters for a 6.5" sub. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm struggling to find any with a decent specification that won't be bank breaking! I found these but it means getting them shipped from the USA. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_43587_Kicker-CVT651-10CVT651.html

The car has a Sony double din headunit in already. I'd need an amp too.

The standard speakers in the car aren't too bad really they're just a bit lacking low down. I like a bit of bass. Tends to be these types of music I have on most often:

General Car Chat / Why can't people drive?! - Rant
« on: 03 June 2012, 17:05:05 »
Rant ahead.

What the opps is up with some people? How do they pass their driving tests? Pootling along today with all the family in the car taking my mum out for her birthday lunch. There's some tight twisty roads where I live and I was doing maybe 15mph through a corner. Now this particular bend you HAVE to stay right over to your side otherwise you'll hit the oncoming car.

Have a guess what happened.

A tank of a Lexus (I'm guessing the new LS model because it was MASSIVE) tore past me half way onto my side of the road doing at least 30 on a blind corner. I swerved as quick as I could and we must have passed each other with maybe an inch to spare. Bad news is I jumped up the curb, which has knackered the steering geometry. The curb also smashed into the mud flap and I thought nothing of this until I heard the dragging sound. I pulled over as soon as it was safe to hoping to find the Lexus had stopped, only to find the side skirt had detached itself and the only thing that was holding it on was a screw going into it from the mudflap and the Lexus was nowhere in sight. There's a slight scrape and a few scratches on the wing too from the bushes too but I think they'll polish out.

Not a happy bunny. Has anyone got a passenger side Star Silver side skirt going spare for a facelift? Mine is in the hedge where I had to stuff it because I couldn't get it in the car with everyone in there but from what I saw, it's wrecked. Rant over.

Cheers.

General Car Chat / Has there ever been a big power 2.2?
« on: 14 May 2012, 16:14:55 »
Hi guys.

Been looking at the next set of mods for the car now the exhaust is booked in and the suspension is all sorted. The car currently makes 181bhp on petrol and 160... something on gas, but I'm looking to buy another engine to take this further in the future. I'm a marine engineering student so this would be a little mini project to do on the side. Don't fancy the idea of super/turbo charging it so cams would be the next port of call. Much past that I'd be starting to think about the pistons and crank.

Has anyone ever built a big (ish) power 2.2? Know there's loads for the VX220 but not the same 2.2!

EDIT - can find a screenshot of the rolling road run if anyone's interested!

Cheers

Omega General Help / Slight knock from the front suspension
« on: 08 May 2012, 22:23:32 »
Alright guys.

Back for the knowledge fountain again. Got a bit of a knock from the front suspension that has got worse quite quickly. I can feel it through the steering wheel too as well as it being audible inside the car. The steering idler was replaced about 3 weeks ago so it'll be going back to get this checked but I was wondering what else it could be. Next thought was droplinks? These used to be quite a common thing to go on the Vectra I had before the Omega and created a knocking noise from the front suspension but I can't remember if I could feel it through the wheel or not. The car doesn't wander like it did before the steering idler was done but it doesn't feel quite as precise as it did.

Do droplinks sound like the correct next port of call?

Cheers.

Hi guys.

After a Star Silver rear bumper for a facelift saloon if one of the breakers has one knocking about? I'm on the Wirral near Liverpool.

Cheers.
