Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Quick aerial question
« on: 03 August 2009, 14:02:23 »
I need to get a new windscreen tomorrow and was wondering whether the aerial for the radio is part of the front windscreen or the rear? The glaziers asked me about rain-sensitive wipers etc but not about the radio aerial.

Cheers,

Andrew

Quick stereo question: Are there crossovers for the front mid/tweeter speakers either on the loom or the speakers themselves? Or do the OE stereos have 6 speaker outputs? Only asking as I want to install a stereo at the weekend and looks like I'll probably have to do it pretty much from scratch, as Plod as left a lot of chopped looms in the dash.

Obviously the stereo I buy will only have 4 speaker outputs (I'm presuming), so how is it best to wire the 6 speakers if there are no crossovers?

Cheers,

Andrew

Omega General Help / TC and ABS sensors - where?
« on: 19 May 2010, 11:25:02 »
I've had intermittent TC and ABS warning light issues ever since I've had my Miggy (about 2 years now). They'll randomly come on, usually if I hit a bump in the road but sometimes when nothing untoward has happened. Other times it'll go days without occurring. They clear as soon as the ignition is switched off.

I don't think that it's an ECU issue as I've never had any problems with the speedo, so presuming that there are loose or dirty connections/sensors which are playing up. Going to be changing the front brakes at the weekend so want to see if I can address this issue whilst I am at it.

So where exactly are the sensors for TC and ABS? I presume that the TC only works on the rear and therefore that's where the sensors are. Are they the two lead that connect to the back of the diff?

To clarify; the TC and ABS lights always come on together, never indepedently. If the TC sensors are only at the rear, does that mean that there can't be a fault at the front, which is triggering the ABS lights?

Omega General Help / Exhaust manifolds
« on: 25 February 2010, 15:57:45 »
As per a previous thread, it looks like my exhaust manifolds (well, at least one anyway) need replacing. Do these need to be OE Genuine Vauxhall stealers parts? I've seem them on Buypartsby for about £6 each. Any other suggestions?

Also, is this worth attempting myself or will I enter a whole world of pain containing seized/rounded nuts, broken studs and stripped threads?

Omega General Help / Ticking from offside engine.
« on: 11 February 2010, 11:47:36 »
My car has developed a bit of a tick from the offside of the engine. Thought at first that it was a wheel-bearing but is audible on idle. Sounds like it is coming from low down, behind the front wheel, if looking at the car side-on. Definitely only on the offside. Increasing with throttle. Less audible in the cabin but still there. Gets a little better when engine warm. Starts to disappear over 3k (but probably because the rest of the engine/exhaust is drowning it out). No noticeable effect on performance.

Wondering if maybe it's the bearing in the water pump? Not exactly sure where that's located though. The car is a '98 3.0 V6.

   Any ideas people?

Omega General Help / Which clutch kit?
« on: 27 November 2009, 12:05:48 »
Hi,

the clutch on my '96 3.0 has finally bitten the dust. I've had a look on Buypartsby and have found their LUK clutch kits. They list two - Repset and Repsetpro.

"BuyPartsBy offers a model-specific RepSet or RepSetPro for repair work on all cars, commercial vehicles and tractor models.

Clutch discs, clutch assembly and clutch release bearings all play an essential part in professional repair work on a worn clutch. These components are included in the RepSet and guarantee safe function.

The RepSetPro also contains a concentric slave cylinder, which now combines the slave cylinder and release bearing in one component in one in every two cars. The concentric slave cylinder should be changed each time the clutch is replaced to avoid a delayed fault resulting in extra time in the workshop."

I couldn't find any reference to changing the slave cylinder in the maintenance guide. Which one should I get, seeing as there is a considerable difference in price?

Cheers,

Andrew

P.S. my local stealers wanted £743.12 just for parts.....  ::)

Omega General Help / Best place to get windscreen fitted
« on: 06 February 2009, 12:56:26 »
hi all,

where is the best place to get a new windscreen fitted for my Omega and what's the likely cost? Having trouble getting quotes as everyone wants it done via my insurance it seems.

Alternatively, if I upgrade to Fully Comp (didn't bother at the time as car is worth buttons) how long before I can make a claim?

Any experience of either would be appreciated.

Omega General Help / Suspension - Bilstein and springs
« on: 26 January 2009, 13:50:39 »
Hi,

had to replace my rear shocks last year and fitted a set of Bilstein B4's (MV6 equivalent I believe). I'm looking to replace the fronts also in the coming months, again with B4's. So now my attention has turned to springs. Bilstein don't make springs seperately and I don't wish to bin the new rears to get a whole matched "Sport Kit". Besides, previous experience of Bilstein springs in other cars would not persuade me to buy them again (apart from their coilover kits). So....my first port of call would be Eibach. They do a "performance" kit for the Omega of uprated springs but as they lower the ride height, I'm a little weary of how they will work with the MV6-B4's.

Does anyone have any experience of running this combination of can anyone advise of other suitable springs?

Omega General Help / Exhaust - Centre box swap for straight thru
« on: 14 January 2009, 17:08:37 »
Hi,

anyone removed the centre boxes on a V6 and replaced with straight-through pipes from CATs to back box?
Will it be/is it very loud??

Just thinking up more money saves mods :)

Omega General Help / Tyre valves - a little rant
« on: 13 January 2009, 14:42:50 »
I'm running 15" steelies so there may not be many people that have experienced the same as me but here goes! I've just lost my second front tyre due to the hub-caps moving and tearing the tyre valve. First time it happened was at the Nurburgring in Germany, on the nearside. Fortunately I managed to pump some more air into the tyre and keep it inflated enough to drive it to a garage and have a new valve fitted. I then removed the plastic hub caps. When I got the car back after it's MoT, just before Xmas, the garage had put the hub caps back on and I didn't really think much of it at the time.
Anyway, my flatmate was driving the car home on Sunday night and the offside valve has now been split by the hub cap moving round. He didn't have a phone on him so tried to just nurse the car back. The tyre has come off the rim and is now trash. So is this a known design flaw with VX hub-caps?? I guess most people have alloys so it's not an issue. I had new valves fitted when I had all 4 tyres replaced back in May. Perhaps they are poor quality valves or perhaps designed for alloys? I don't know really. All I do know is that I not putting the bloody plastic hub-caps back on!

Omega General Help / DIS PACK - URGENT!!
« on: 18 December 2008, 13:10:25 »
Hi all,

car is withthe garage for it's MoT. Had to have a new pair of CATS fitted and I also changed the camcover gaskets, plugs & leads, as the engine had a misfire and was failing the emissions. Lead 6 was completely shot - rubber split and holed. Will explain why the near side CAT was ratlling like a spray can. Well the engine still has a misfire, so guessing that it must be the DIS pack?

So, can anyone confirm the part number for the 3.0V6 DIS pack, with the oval connector? Also, where is the best place to try and source one? I need it ASAP as I need the car running before Xmas. Does anyone have a known good working one that they could send next day delivery??

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Hi,

spent the weekend changing the cam-cover gaskets and plugs, leads etc (inbetween running away from the rain and generally freezing my tits off). First problem encountered was that the stealers didn't give me the right parts, or rather, insufficient parts. Paid for and received a receipt for 2 x camcover gaskets. What I actually received were two gaskets, in 1 pack....so basically one side or one gasket kit.....very helpful. Anyway, didn't discover this until I'd stripped one side down. So fitted the new gaskets to that side, along with plugs and leads. Cleaned up the other side as best I could and applied some new sealant and fitted new plugs and leads. Put everything back together and........nothing :( Engine turns over but doesn't fire. So......obviously I'm going to have to pull everything apart again and see where I have gone wrong but I thought that I'd ask here first to see if there are some classic mistakes that I may have made. It's possible that not all the leads are on in the right order. I will have to search out the firing/DIS arrangement on here. However, surely the engine should still fire, albeit it badly? So I'm thinking that there is no power going to the DIS and there no spark at all. Is there a power lead to the DIS that I could have removed by mistake? It was hard seeing what I was doing, even with the scuttle removed, so had to feel my way around the DIS. I guess that it's not too hard to check for a spark. If not the DIS/spark, then I was thinking fuel. Is there a lead/plug for the injetctor loom that I may have unwittingly removed? The tank was pretty empty so I put some more petrol in. Does it take a while for fuel pressure to build up? I spent quite a while turning the engine over but to no avail.

I tried to clean as much oil off the spark plugs as possible before removing them although some oil would have fallen in. Could this cause a failure to fire on all cylinders? I'll have to wait until next weekend before I can look at the car again so was hoping to pick peoples brains on here first. One thing I did notice that I thought might be wrong, was that next to the fuel pressue release valve (under the black plastic cap) is a small pipe pointing straight up. Could see anything to connect this to when I was put everything back together. Ideas anyone??? :-?

Omega General Help / Diagnosing a misfire
« on: 03 November 2008, 14:50:10 »
Is there any way of diagnosing a misfire, other than just changing plugs, leads, DIS, crank sensor etc?

The cam cover gaskets need replacing, so I will replace the plugs at the same time. But it could work out expensive if I have to change the leads, then the DIS only to find that it's the crank sensor. Any ideas/suggestions people?

Omega General Help / Need a new CAT - where from and how much?
« on: 03 November 2008, 10:17:05 »
Hi, I need to get a new cat - front nearside - VX part number: 90467217
Can anyone recommend a good online retailer to order it from? I've seen prices online of around £70 but obviuosly would like the best price possible. Also, would I be able to fit this myself or is it not worth the hassle if a garage won't charge a fortune?

Thanks,

Andrew

Omega General Help / Airbag warning light
« on: 01 November 2008, 13:00:44 »
Took the steering wheel off this morning as I wanted to investigate the grumbling noise on full knock - suspect broken squib or some such. Steering wheel wouldn't come off of course - not without me getting medieval on it - which didn't appeal to me at the time.

Anyway, left the battery disconnected for about an hour first to ensure that the airbag was disengaged. Unscrewed it and removed the orange wire. Refit was reverse of removal - made sure that the orange connector clicked home fully. Started the car and the airbag warning light is now on and not going out once driven. Will it go out in time - is it still on because it's running a diagnostic? Does it matter which way round the orange connector goes on? Starting to rain now so don't think that I'll be able to do any more jobs - would like to solve this before I finish though....
