Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Quick aerial question
« on: 03 August 2009, 14:02:23 »
I need to get a new windscreen tomorrow and was wondering whether the aerial for the radio is part of the front windscreen or the rear? The glaziers asked me about rain-sensitive wipers etc but not about the radio aerial.

Cheers,

Andrew

Just go into a car hifi shop and get an ISO adapter for Vauxhalls - simply plug'n'play.

look at your rear window does it have 2 lines running down it if so thats your aerial amplifier is under rear parcel shelf !!

Oh OK, cool. Just wondering whether the lead up front with the connector still exists, after plod have installed & removed all their equipment.

That's perfect! Cheers Dave.

It maybe that the orignal stereo leads and connectors are in tact - pretty diffilcut to tell as there are so many other looms and wires back there, and I've never seen one before. I'll have a look-see and a play about with a multimeter and see if I can identigy a live, ignition-live and an earth. Failing that, I'll just wire it up from scratch. I'm presuming that Plod has removed the speaker cables, just taped them up somewhere? So I should be able to figure those out.

There does appear to be something that looks like and aeriel connection, although not the kind that I am used to - same diameter but a lot flatter. If it's not and I can't find the aerial - tough. Don't think that I can be bothered with pulling all the roof lining and trim apart to fit one.

Quick stereo question: Are there crossovers for the front mid/tweeter speakers either on the loom or the speakers themselves? Or do the OE stereos have 6 speaker outputs? Only asking as I want to install a stereo at the weekend and looks like I'll probably have to do it pretty much from scratch, as Plod as left a lot of chopped looms in the dash.

Obviously the stereo I buy will only have 4 speaker outputs (I'm presuming), so how is it best to wire the 6 speakers if there are no crossovers?

Cheers,

Andrew

Omega General Help / Re: turboing your v6

Nonsense.

Providing the correctly sized turbos and intake piping are used, lag is no more of an issue than a conventional front-mounted turbo.

The cheapest and easiest way to mount a pair of turbos to the X30XE engine would be to fit them to the rear of the exhaust pipes and route the boost back to the engine. This way you don't require expensive custom manifolds, you don't lose room in the engine bay and engine bay temps are also kept low. The are plenty of off the shelf kits for Corvettes etc. Have a look here for example: http://www.ststurbo.com/ it's a proven method that has been used on lots of cars.

However, the inherent weakness in the X30XE (it's not designed with sufficient cooling ability to take considerable power increases) means that I'd imagine you'd still be far better off swapping the motor for something more suitable for big power in the first place.

Omega General Help / Re: Camcover gaskets prices!!!
« on: 27 July 2010, 12:36:52 »
Make sure that the dealers give you 4 FOUR cam cover gaskets, not a pair, as in two cam cover gaskets in 1 pack......ask me how I know, go on, ask.......  >:(

If they are bolts, can they be replaced with studs/nuts and vice versa?

Teknopug, your being a 96 Omega may have bolts and not nuts between the manifold and downpipe. The bolts need loads of plusgas before you try to undo then ;)

Thanks for that Pete. Is there anyway of knowing for definite (without) looking whether a "P" plate car will need studs or bolts? Also, will I need to order 4 dowty washers for the coolant bridge, an O-ring for the coolant transfer pipe, an exhaust manifold gasket and a gasket from the manifold to the down pipe for this year of engine?

I've got mine booked in on Saturday. Considered doing it myself but the aforementioned shearing stud issue has put me off. Also, there is a chance that it's a crack in the manifold and not the gasket.

Didn't get a quote from my mechanic but he seemed very confident that I could have the car back the same day (also having the centre silencers replaced) so I can't see it being that much.

Need to order the gasket and studs/nuts today.

Another thread running quotes the following dealer prices:

vauxhall gasket is £8.99 inc VAT, avaliable as a single gasket.

manifold studs £0.39 each inc VAT
Studs £0.67 each inc VAT

I'm going to get a couple of silencers from BuyPartsBuy and would like to order an exhaust gasket from them at the same time to save on postage. Anyone have experience of them? Part Number : EM846

There are enough plod Scoobies and Evos on the road to suggest that they could have justified some V8 saloons.

Omega General Help / Re: TC and ABS sensors - where?
« on: 24 May 2010, 11:35:31 »
Actually, thinking about it, I had the CATS replaced last year and they include the downpipe I believe? So it's either the gasket or I've got a cracked manifold. This is starting to sound expensive..... :(

Got the brakes done at the weekend. Drivers side was pretty straight forward. Had to move the wheel arch trim to get enough leverage on the carrier bolts. The Pagid pads had a lot of life (at least 50%) in them but the discs were shot. Decided to replace the pads anyway but have kept them for future use.

The passenger side took a lot longer though as the disc retaining bolt had been over-tightened and it rounded. So I had to spend some time drilling it out and then using a cold chisel and hammer to turn it.

Cleaned up the reluctor rings and removed all the crud around the sensors. Put the brakes through several heat cycles and impressions were good. Certainly the squealing had gone. Not as much bite as the Pagid pads but they probably need some more abuse to bed them in. Best of all, the ABS/TC lights stayed off for the 90 odd mile journey home. :)

Started the car first thing on Sunday and the ABS/TC lights came back on almost straight away :( Didn't get round to checking the rears so that'll be the next point of call. I guess if after I clean them and I'm still having issues then it's time for new sensors. Any idea how much they cost?

Oh and my suspected blown exhaust manifold gasket would appear to be more likely a blown down-pipe, as I now have an almost V8 soundtrack....my neighbours are loving me!
