So start of the school holidays and again there's massive chaos and queues at Dover. 

Frankley I think you want your head read if you even contemplate crossing the Channel on a ferry just at the beginning of any school holiday especially with post Brexit EU passport checks. 

I wonder though, is it any coincidence that French immigration are causing massive queues at Dover the day after Britain announces that it will join the CPTPP?

The main problem now is that people on coaches (mainly university students off for a weeks skiing) have to get off the coaches and have their passport stamped. Obviously that's 50+ people per coach who in the past would have just been waived through.

The reason they have to get off the coach is that as non EU residents you are only allowed to spend 90 out of any 180 days inside the Schengen zone. The computer system to monitor this isn't yet up and running (and hopefully never will be!), so the only way they know how long you've spent inside the Schengen zone is by counting up the in and out stamp dates. Now generally the French don't care about in and out stamps, but other countries - Germany, Austria, Swizerland - do, and having a mismatch/missing in and out stamps in your passport can cause grief, and potentially get you refused entry. 

This is the first fully non Covid winter since BREXIT. Can't see things getting better any time soon when traveling at peak times over the Channel.

Just imagine, it could take about sixty seconds to deal with all four people in a car. No, not imagine, remember.


And this is the easy bit of border control; imagine what it's like bringing a forty ton truck loaded with several different consignments. Except you don't have to imagine that either, just go to any port and look at the queues.

Plus the small fact that it isnt an organisation at all, but a political union which is three quarters of the way to its stated destination of a federal union, just like the USA.

If you think it's bad now, just wait a few years for when/if they get their computerised system up and running. Then you'll have to pay for a Visa, which is expected to cost about £30-£50 and will last 3 years. You'll also need have biometric information scanned - which means finger prints and photographs taken on first entry/use of the Visa. Just imagine the queues the first Easter/Christmas after that comes in.

One of the reasons for the system is that it's perfectly legal for a UK national to hold 2 UK passports, so counting up the in and out dates via the stamps doesn't work.

It'll be very similar to the US immigration system - if they can ever get it to work. It was supposed to go live last year, but to no-ones surprise hasn't and keeps being pushed back 6 months. Of course EU nationals can just be waived straight through

As for the £25b, what a load of 'dangle berries'.  We got a shed load of that back for EU funded projects in the UK.  Hence the promised £280m a week for the NHS has never materialised.

Besides, when we voted to leave, the world was in much better shape. If we had even considered the notion of TCV and its effects, maybe things would be different. But this is where we're at.

Bulk border crossings by ferry could be made so much easier using APIS and random checks rather than insisting on scratching everyone's arse as they shuffle onto the boat.

It's a system that has worked well in air travel and on the Eurostar.

I'll say it again. It's not unreasonable to expect your neighbouring country to operate their border posts efficiently. If the EU wanted to strip search everyone before entry that's fine, it's their territory and their rules, but they should do these things quickly and efficiently! 

Mobile roaming? If when you go on holiday to Euroland and the hotel WIFI doesn't cover your needs then you're probably a lost cause and beyond help! 

As to the £25bn, it's not 'dangle berries' at all. Since we left, the EU's multi annual budget has ballooned despite losing their second biggest economy and contributor.  IN 2021 France's budget contribution was 28.8bn Euros and it's not unreasonable to assume ours would have been about the same with a similar sized economy . Yes we got some back via the rebate (which might not have survived the multi annual budget negotiations) and in funding for projects, but to describe it as a shedload is laughable and we didn't have any control over where that money went anyway.

Apparently, going by when I was last in Euroland last year, not being able to photograph your meal and post it immediately on InstaArse was like being in hell for anyone under the age of 30.

Personally, I couldn't give a hoot, I was a fan of the old days when it was simply too expensive to use roaming, I'm happy to be disconnected for a week or two.  Sadly, my freebie mobile contract does still have freebie EU roaming. Not that I take selfies and post them on my non-existent Arsebook thingie.

It's no different to Tescos on Christmas eve, or Stansted arrivals most Sunday nights.

You can't expect anyone to employ dozens of border officers to cope with a surge in demand on perhaps 3 or 4 days a year, and then have them sit around doing nothing for the other 360 days.

I've not used Dover for ages, but use the Chunnel 3 or 4 times a year. On a good day you sail straight through and can be on a train in 20 minutes. On a busy day it can be a 4-5 hour wait.

There are UK customs and immigration people in France at Eurotunnel. You clear customs and immigration before you get on the train, either Coquelles for the Chunnel or Paris/Brussels for Eurostar. Haven't travelled by boat for years, but assume it's the same at Calais and Dover.

There aren't customs/immigration officials checking people on pedalos at Weymouth beach though.

Three still offer a decent free roaming, I think thats mostly global as well, not just EU

Yep, me too. Cancelled my outward journey at zero notice, then wouldn't accept the return ticket because I hadn't used the outward part.

Did get a voucher off them in the end. I took great pleasure in informing them of my preference with regard to where it should be inserted.
