Painting
« on: 11 March 2010, 22:09:52 »

Well the bloke who mucked my van up sorted front & rear bumpers and bumper inserts, but to any painters on here, what special primer will he need to paint the plastic door mouldings and any idea how they are stuck on, on an Astra H, also can he paint them on the van without getting paint in the gaps like he did last time. Been a long time since I did any car painting so help will be appreciated  :y :y

I think the primer needs to have plasticiser in it Del, so the paint can flex rather than crack when the plastic expands/contracts depending on temperature.

If your painting bear plastic, its just normal plastic primer you need, and if its already painted, theres no need to prime, just wet sand to a nice finish, and put paint on top plus laquer. :y

Not already painted as when I took it to a jet wash to prove how shit the finish was, it blew all the paint off. I'd put money on it that he never primed it before to be honest. Cheers Mark and Albs by the way  :y

Del, there's acouple of reasons for the paint to flake off, as with most things, preperation is everything, he needs to key the surface with a fine grade scotch pad, and before applying any primer or paint, he needs to spray the surface with plastic adhesion promoter, otherwise nothing will stick, if it's a black textured finnish at present, and you want a smooth finnish, he needs to spray the complete part with high build primer to cover the textured surface, then apply base coat and clear coat, hope it works out for you, any problems, send me a message, good luck.

It's very hard to find a good painter down here to be honest mate, all of them seem to be cowboys who do a crap job or get the wrong colour. Would be nice to have someone such as yourself near here don't fancy moving do you  ;D Very much appreciated though  :y

Could he paint them (door mouldings) on the van, last time he did it it left paint in the gaps, will he have to take them off?

Cheers again mate

Ideally you'd want to take them off, but anyone whos decent at masking shouldn't get paint in the gaps, i always have a filler spreader split down the center to push excess tape neatly into any gaps, and also, de mask when the clear coat is still wet, this will prevent him peeling off the new paint when it's all baked off and dry, colour coding mouldings really isn't that difficult, but i suppose you get good and bad in every trade.

If they're just stuck on with adhesive, he needs to warm it up with a heat gun, not too close, or he'll blister your paint and end up painting the door, anyway, heat it up, and work a flat spatula, or clean filler spreader under the trim, but check first that there's no 8 or 10 mil nuts holding it at either end, i hope you haven't paid a lot to this chap, it's a shame, when you get a bad apple in the trade like this, it can get the rest of us a bad name.

Not loads really but not a cheap job, £230 (around that can't remember exact price now) for front and rear bumpers, mirror covers and bumper inserts.

Changed to tomorrow as I needed the van today, noticed luckily too, he painted the wings which I forgot to say, all the paint has sunk into the stone chips, so he'll be doing them again too.
