Thanks for all the kind welcomes!

I've not seen the car yet but it was advertised on the Autobahnstormers forum - I'm still a member although I sold my Mk1 Senator 2.5 back in August, and had 2 1978 Opel Rekord 2.0S Berlinas before that  8-)

It comes up on the RAC vehicle check as an Omega Elite though, and the seller has been waxing lyrical about the electric, heated memory leather chairs, so let's see what it's like tomorrow evening.

I've ordered the cambelt DVD so look forward to having a go.  Any other pointers from anyone who has done the cambelt change before I get going, apart from buying the right tools (e.g. Torx sockets, 30mm spanner)?  I'm thinking of ordering the belts and tensioners from Autovaux, they did me well a couple of years back when I was sourcing bits for a Belmont GLSi I was getting back on the road  :)

Hello and welcome from me too... nice find, as has been said manual Elites are a rare beast, which is why I limited my search to MV6s which are plentiful in manual form.

That's because the only people who buy Omegas from the dealers are old geezers who don't know they're being robbed, and have long since lost the ability to coordinate 4 limbs at once ;D ;) They'll be back in a year's time asking for a new model with automatic steering too!

Right chaps, just back from picking the car up earlier.

It's fantastic, although there appears to be a problem with the knock sensor on the driver's side - might have got caught in the auxiliary belt (which has seen better days) - seller managed to wiggle it to clear the 'check engine' light at the weekend but within a mile of me collecting it, it came on again.  A real shame as it felt like it was drinking minestrone rather than petrol on the way home!  :'(

Still, everything seems to work (although the Multi-Information Display needed a good thump to stabilise the backlighting, and it seems to think it's 1 January 1992 and the outside temp is 64.5C!) and it cruises nicely.  A little rust under the rubber seal on the offside rear door and a couple of bubbles on the window ledges, but otherwise it looks the part.  Even has a load liner in the back!

The cambelt held up (the service book is AWOL and the mileage is 126k, so don't know when it was last done - had pukka owners though), and my cambelt DVD arrived today - many thanks Robin Hood - so I will order the parts and watch it several times over the next couple of weeks before diving in.

Sounds like you have the job well in hand.

Just make sure the belt and tensioners are well within the 4 years / 40K limit.  Could really spoil your day if you give your new pride and joy some welly and it lets go, giving you a brush and shovel repair!     ;)

Congratulations on your new purchase mate and welcome to the site.

I'd love a manual gearbox in my Elite!  :(

Thanks again for the welcome chaps!

Ordered my cambelt and tensioner kit, auxiliary belt and water pump from Autovaux, hiring their fitting kit as well.  So the weekend after next is fitting time - I'm off to watch the DVD again :y
