Rear offiside creaking - handbrake shoes??
« on: 24 June 2015, 12:52:45 »

So.....

Just put the car through an MOT 2 weeks ago and passed with flying colours - had just fitted new shocks and rear exhaust too. Have noticed that when first pulling away or going over bumps i get a creaking noise from the back drivers wheel area - so, had mechanic check the bushes - all fine, new shocks so not a problem but its still happening.

Hard to describe but its not like a clunk - more like if you had a very heavy door that creaked when opening. MOT didnt pick up any issues with bushes, wheel bearings are fine so im stumped. When its sat stationary and i push down on that corner i can hear it.

Someone had said that it could be the handbrake shoes worn and pressing against the internal drum - the handbrake passed the mot but has stuck before.

anyone else heard of this? Im selling her shortly but as im honest, dont want to pass on a problem!!  :D :D :D :D :D

It could be the handbrake shoes.
There is a spring withing the handbrake assembly (inside the rear disc), which can snap or slip out of position -> as a result, handbrake shoes don't have a 'load' which 'pulls them inwards' (removing it from drum surface). In this case, you can hear a variety of grinding noises from the rear.
Can it be heared often?

Hi Bojan- yes, usually when pulling away and turning corners slowly!! its just like an old wooden door creaking / something rattling in the boot - (although its deffo nothing in the boot  :D

What shocks did you fit? Elite should only have self levelling ones...

Also, were the top mounts renewed? If so, with what?

soz meant to say, it was the rear shocks that were done - not the front struts..

How funny.....I was showing my cousin, a mechanic, my latest Omega on Sunday, and he lent on it and it squeaked. First thing he said was handbrake or rear brakes. Bounced it again and said the same...handbrake ;)
