Rev Counter Over Reading
« on: 11 April 2009, 22:43:48 »

Hi

After we did the conversion it took us a while to get all the wires sorted got the rev counter to work but it over reads by about 2000 rpm , is there anything i can do or do i have to get one from a v6 or can the one i have be recalibrated im running the motronic 2.8.1 management .

Thank You

Im not sure but it sounds like your rev counter is picking multiple signals.
So go back to the wires and check to see if any signal wires to the ECM have been bridged.
Do you have a miss fire ?

 :)

nope no missfire , car running like a dream . to give you a idea on with the old motor C20NE with the F18 C/R Gearbox the motor would sit at 3500 rpm @ 120 Km/h , it now reads 5500 rpm at the same speed  :-? also with the F18 still trying to get a F28  ;D . no wires are bridged .

i couldnt get one here that whould fit into the astra f cluster , we didnt even get the v6 calibra's here , i think its going to be hard to get one that will fit if the original one cant be made to work .

Thats why i like this forum , i couldnt realy get any info on the opel ownersclub not many people here know about these motors .  ;)

Lol.....its bound to be wrong, you had a 4 pot giving 2 pulses per revolution and now you have a V6 giving 3 pulses per revolution.

The rev counter will be for a 4 pot so you should get about a 50% over read!

An option might be to knock up a circuit to modify the signal by dividing by 1.5.

thats great news , do you think i would be able to get pictures of the circuit on the internet , i can build it if i have a diagram . i have no idea on where to begin to build something like that from scratch :-[ .

Just found a nice read on another forum and it looks like i can use a CD4046 with a few other components to divide it , just need to figure it out now  :y

Thank You

I remember this happening to me. I put up with it but replace the crank sensor months later as it failed. This seemed to cure it although I dont know if it was related!

errrr.....if the old one was 4.194304 Mhz then the new one would need to be 50% faster at 6.291456 Mhz

If the Rev.-counter is from the old C20NE instrument, I'm not shure it will work.
Are you shure that the only difference between the R4 and V6 rev.counter is the crystal?

Otherwice you should be able to fit a rev.-counter from a Cavalier III V6 or Calibra V6 as it's the same instrument housing.
