This mower has never had any guts in it. The lawn has to be only slightly long and it will struggle not to stall.
It has a 123cc 4 stroke engine that seems devoid of any torque, and nothing like as good as an old Atco I had years ago that would batter it's way through just about anything.
I think the problem is with the carb that is so puny (and plastic) that it won't allow the mower to rev.
Any idea on how to give it some balls?
-
Checkered stripes on the side, and a megaphone exhaust? ::)
-
Get an electric mower! :)
-
get a goat
-
Nitrous. It's a perfect candidate for a small 50hp kit. It will make mowing the lawn a laugh :)
-
Get the help to do it and have a G&T while watching them struggle
-
I've removed the air filter in case it was being too restrictive. No difference.
A weber carb may help... ::)
It just won't rev. :-\

Does your gardener not speak to your mechanic direct ?
assume it's a Briggs and stratton :-\
what model engine ?

Yes....B and G. Utter crap.
I think a Honda may be a better bet according to the 'information superhighway' :y
-
My old Honda Izzy was brilliant, but not fireproof. I have a clapped out B&S based Hayter now. No idea where the throttle is, but is fine.
-
To lower emissions they lowered the rpm, which in turn affected the speed of cut and caused them to bog down on long wet grass. You can usually get away with bending the governor arm to get them to rev higher. You'd be surprised, those little carbs will handle it. They probably cog them down to about 2600rpm but with a bit of fine bending you'll get it to run at around 3000rpm. I think they top out around 3600rpm but it's painful to listen to. ::) ;D
Sell it and buy a Toro or Honda for your big garden. :y
-
Sharper blades?
-
a new carb is cheap , no battery to short out, but it is fiddly
if it has been left over winter with stale fuel in ,part blocked jet perhaps :-\

Interesting......Where exactly is the governor arm?
I suppose I could drop a lump of Detroit V8 in it but I worry it would spoil the well-balanced handling. :)
-
Put the engine out of the Tata into it? That should give it a little more "go" ;D

Can't be worse than a derv engine, I suppose. :)

Just to clarify, will it actually rev its tits off if you manually influence the throttle linkages. If unsure, just move any linkage to see if it actually will rev up.
Briggs, Troy Bilt, Honda etc. can all be influenced by bending one of the arms or spring on the governor arm but depending on what model you have depends where the rod is. Our Briggs goes across the front but our Toro goes from the carb linkages to the rear of the cylinder.
Grab any rod and move it to see if you can increase the revs, then bend/re-loop the arm or spring to suit. :y
Sharp/balanced blades doesn't help, it's the nanny low rpm that causes them to die on you. :y

It won't rev it's tits off regardless of what I pull.

My 8hp ride on mower tractor is Briggs and Stratton and can pull a wheelie in most gears. Have you had a look to see if there is a dead mouse in the airfilter?
I am thinking you need a derv powered mower. Something out of a canal boat. :y

Thought you had a gardener anyway :)
-
What engine, Briggs 625exi or similar ?? with plastic engine cover?? Remove the top cover to gain better access to the linkages. You can run them without the top cover. What happens when you manually influence the linkages, does it bog down and die? If it does you could try cleaning out the carb, they are a piece of piss to clean out once removed. :y If nothing happens the throttle arm is not working. They are very basic, auto-choke arm, throttle arm and governor. If I was nearer I'd have a look for you, I quite enjoy tinkering with mowers/strimmers etc. :D Yeh, sad I know. ;D

A diesel motor would give you oodles of torque, cut right through a tree trunk. ;D

You don't get any of this aggro with an electric mower, just plug her in and away we go! :y

What would the power drop be with a 500m extension? Lord Opti's grounds are extensive.
Unlike his todger

That's essentially what he's already got I believe, the one above just being sold as a 'Garden Line' product. Mountfield are the same, with the lower end fitted with Briggs and the higher end fitted with Honda. Hayter use Briggs on most now so the mowers end up looking the same, just with Briggs or Honda engines.
With Opti's vast estate he may be better off with a larger Toro or Honda.

In appearance and specification it is almost identical to the model I currently loathe and despise. :y

Buy the Aldi mower with three years guarantee, swap some bits over until yours is a runner and then take it back and say it's shite. ;D :y

Wickes will sell you an almost identical one for a quid less, that doesn't have a BS engine.

If it isn't revving it's probably fuel starvation.
I had a similar problem with a two-stroke strimmer and I eventually traced it to the "transparent yellow" plastic tube used for the petrol pipe which was slowly being dissolved by the petrol and gumming up the carburettor.
Clean the jets in the carb and replace the pipe with good petrol-proof pipe. Use a bit of RedeX to keep the carb clean.
