Omega General Help / Quick Q re dash bulbs....
« on: 14 November 2008, 19:38:36 »
Simple yet frustrating!  :(
On start up, and the automatic brakelight check with lights on, the display shows a headlight / taillight fault depite all lights being in working order. I have checked all connections as best I can and they seem fine, but I have a bulb out behind the speedo. Not sure how long it has been out, and whether it is the cause of the 'check', but am considering replacing it just in case. I've seen the 'how2' about removing the display unit - is it really that simple to replace the bulb/s?
Cheers..

Omega General Help / Wheel alignment
« on: 25 January 2007, 15:30:28 »
I've been told by local tyre dealer that I should be taking the Omega to Vx to have the alignment checked, as he won't touch them any more. Anyone had it done by Vx or indeed any other company?

Omega General Help / HBV?
« on: 27 June 2007, 23:46:17 »
Got the car MOTd yesterday - happy days!! ;D
Went today and finally got the four wheel alignment done - again happy days!! :)

On my way home realised the steering wheel was not level when the car was driving straight. When I held the steering wheel level the car veered sharply to the left. Not happy days, but I rang the boss of the place that did it and he told me to bring the car back in the morning - fair enough.

When I went out to the car tonight noticed evidence of a leak. Gutted :(
There was no pool of fluid so whatever it was had stopped and I couldn't see any evidence of where it had come from. I did notice the coolant was low so I topped it up and immediately there was a drip from underneath. Seems to be running down drivers side of the gearbox? First thought would be the HBV (is there a how2?) but wanted to ask if there is any chance something may have been damaged by the bloke doing the alignment check? Also does the HBV simply 'go' so that the coolant just runs out of it or might there be a split pipe or something? I'll get a look at it in the morning when its up on the ramp.

Any advice etc much appreciated. I'm meant to be going on holiday, in the motor, on Sunday :-[

Omega General Help / Brake switch
« on: 20 June 2007, 18:03:46 »
I'm trying to fit cruise control and so far have done what I imagined would be the hard bits (WRONG!) - the actuator and stalk. I've located the clutch switch wiring and indeed the brake switch, but can I get the bu**er out? Not on your life. Between trying to hold the pedal down, and keep the sleeve out from the latch end, I can't even 'feel' where the catches are to release them.
Any advice on what I thought would be a simple task, and perhaps is when you know how  ;), would be greatly appreciated.

Omega General Help / Another lifter question..
« on: 20 April 2007, 21:48:28 »
I can see now that the cam lobes and lifters are set in pairs. If a lifter becomes noisy because it cannot maintain the gap, and is therefore being 'hit' rather than 'pushed' by the cam lobe, would it be obvious to see? Should it be out of sync with its neighbour?
Also, if it comes to removing them all and cleaning them, the guide suggests that the piston within the lifter can be pushed in and should then return to its original position. In the two new tappets I have, the piston is fully closed, and I imagine could only be opened by oil and pressure. When one is taken out of the head, it will be full of oil and could therefore be depressed. Once it has been depressed though, how would you be able to depress it again?
Sorry for the stupidity, but in my tiny brain I am obviously missing something  :-[

Can someone give me a bit more information on this task, as part of changing the cam cover gaskets, please?
Thanks a lot

Omega General Help / Strange noise
« on: 14 April 2007, 20:38:56 »
Got home from work today and did an oil and filter change on the Meega. Also gave a good squirt of WD40 round the wishbone and idler bolts in preparation! Also gave a bit of a wipe round where the oil from the rockers is leaking.
Took the car for a drive there and its making a strange whirring type noise. My initial thoughts are that it is something to do with one of the belts, it's that type of noise. I'll be gutted if there is something amiss, although I had already decided to do the cambelt shortly anyway. Wont be too bad I suppose if thats the problem, it will just force my hand.  :(
Not much info I know, but has anyone any thoughts? Anything I could have done/dislodged to create problems? Anything obvious I should be checking or ruling out by elimination?
As always any help or advice gratefully received!

Omega General Help / Aux belt part number
« on: 18 April 2007, 17:12:09 »
1998 2.5 V6 with aircon - dealer has various lengths of belt listed though when I checked the current belt I couldn't see any markings and when I measured it the size didn't correspond.
Anyone any ideas?

Omega General Help / Camshaft replacement
« on: 16 April 2007, 19:45:40 »
I know some of you have changed your cams over recent times. Anyone fancy doing a quick how to? I'll be removing mine to check the lifters, etc and would be grateful for any advice or pitfalls I should try and avoid.

Omega General Help / Hydraulic lifters
« on: 14 April 2007, 11:06:29 »
Just got a couple of spare lifters in the event that some of mine are indeed unusable when I investigate later this month. They are not what I expected though. I had thought that getting new ones would allow me to see exactly how they were before I got them out of the engine for examination, but I expected that I would be able to depress the centre section and release to see if the spring was working ok. These new ones do not seem to have a centre section to depress. They are still in the bag in a smear of oil, and if there is a part to be pushed in then it already is. Perhaps it needs to be filled with oil to force this part out?
Could someone please clarify the layout or make up of the lifter itself so that I can get my bearings, as it were?
Thanks guys  :y

Omega General Help / Exhaust back box
« on: 22 March 2007, 22:55:11 »
Ordered a new exhaust system today, both centre pipes and back box. Don't really need them all because the blow out is only in the LH pipe (at the minute anyway) but for reasons I shall keep to myself I'll be changing the whole lot  :-X.
My question is whether or not the twin exit tail pipe fitted to Elites will fit my 2.5? Vx parts say no, and consequently i ordered the single pipe, but I thought I would ask people who know what they're talking about before it comes!

Omega General Help / A couple of questions....
« on: 28 March 2007, 19:39:01 »
Went to get the new exhaust fitted today but they didn't have any clamps of the right size, and the old ones were unusable, so have to go back again  :(
Mechanic had a look round at my request, and my questions are
1. bushes are on their way out so I guess I'll have to replace the wishbones. Was going to get them from VSC on Ebay due to previous recommendations from members. Any other options?
2. do the droplinks have to be changed at the same time?
3. he also mentioneed a steering component would need changed. Can't remember the phraseology but he said it was on the passenger side and bolted to the chassis leg. It was allowing play in the front passenger wheel. What is he referring to?
4. he also suspects the followers are causing the tapping noise rather then the EM gasket. Anyone fancy doing a 'how to' for removing the cams and followers? The one for cam gaskets goes so far, and there is one for checking the followers themselves, but nothing in between. I think VSC also supply new followers.

Think that's it for now! Sorry about all the questions, and any advice, as always, is gratefully accepted.
Cheers  :y

Omega General Help / Q s re cam followers
« on: 12 March 2007, 21:03:59 »
A couple of things -

1. how do the lifters actually work, and why do they make that tapping noise? Is it because the internal spring is broken?

2. can they be accessed without removing the cams, or indeed can the cams be easily removed and refitted, without doing the belt etc? Belt change not due for another 10k, but cam cover gaskets need done now.

3. I'm hoping to do this myself when changing the gaskets and cleaning the breathers, but wanted some guidance and advice in case I should leave it to a proper mechanic! Particularly if the cambelt has to be done at the same time, though I have the DVD and might just give it a go as well  :-?

4. I have seen Marks DTM guide to cleaning the lifters once they are out, but will try and source some new or good condition used ones (a couple anyway) prior to starting - just in case some may need replacing.

Sorry for the potentially stupid questions, and I guess there could be more to follow  :-[

Cheers in advance

Omega General Help / Quick urgent breather question....
« on: 17 March 2007, 13:58:24 »
The large breather pipe, that splits in two, had one of those clips at the base. Took me forever to get off and now I'm having trouble getting it back on! Is this present on all engines and is it essential? Pipe seems fine without it but would worry that it is required for another reason. The small pipes did not have any clips.
Cheers
