Aw bugger!
« on: 03 October 2012, 19:12:28 »

I'd hoped to be sitting down tonight penning a post about my stat and cam gasket change, and how I'd conquered the B bolt. Instead I'm scratching my head and muttering under my breath  :-[

All had gone well I thought. Work and family had forced me to do it in stages and take my time. Weather didn't help either.

So all reassembled today, and went out after tea to top up the coolant and fire her up.
Unfortunately, as I was adding the coolant, it was running out onto my driveway  :-*
Not so much a leak, more of a waterfall! First thought was the drain plug, but I can see fluid running onto the sump. Can't see where it's coming from, and guess either something has gone spectacularly wrong, or I've left a pipe disconnected somewhere. When I take the plenum off again tomorrow I suppose I'll get a better idea if it's the new stat or maybe the transfer pipe. I'm hoping not as that bolt is a right B! Can't think of anything else, so I'll have to wait and see .........  :-*

Gutted  :-X

Possibility ..... is it a completely new stat with housing ??? and did you use different bolts or cut down the old ones ??

Reason for asking ....  the new housings are "thinner" than the old ones, and the blind holes you screw into are not overdeep, so with the new housing the original bolts, the bolts "bottom" and you think its tight .. but the housing is still loose ..... if that makes any sense ...  :)

It was a new stat and housing. As you say, it was slimmer, so I used washers to bridge the gap / difference. I did think earlier about topping up the coolant before replacing the sandwich plate, etc but forgot about it in my haste to get it reassembled. Regretting it now obviously.
I'd be happy enough if that was the problem, as I wouldn't need to really remove too much again.
The thought of having to remove the b bolt, and more annoyingly, replace it, is not a welcome one  :-X

Even though you have removed and replaced the stat and transfer pipe you havent really disturbed much else so things are pointing to that area as being the problem.

Sorry to ask silly questions but maybe something would jog your memory.

Did you fit new rubber 0 ring gasket to underside of stat housing when replaced ?
2 new 0 rings on the transfer pipe and pushed it fully home then twisted it to engage the B bolt.?
Hose clip onto top hose where it connects to transfer pipe end ?
Hose clip on top hose where it connects to radiator ?...check top hose to ensure it hasn,t split
Both thin coolant hoses that connect to throttle body are fitted with hose clips ? not split or trapped under plenum causing to split.
Did you remove any hoses from the coolant bridge.?

Probably all quite obvious but sometimes they get overlooked.

Best of luck finding it and hope something listed above might be the solution. :y

All that sounds about right, but at the same time I'm starting to doubt myself, so I'll check all those items you've suggested, thank you.
I'm thinking that if it is that obvious, I should be able to see coolant 'lying' in that area, or even watch it escaping as I top up the tank. That would be too easy though, wouldn't it  :D

Right enough. Every cloud, and all that .......
Would that feasibly cause major fluid loss?

Yes. the transfer pipe is a rattling fit into the thermostat housing without the O seals.  :y

Sure you will find it much easier 2nd time around and know what bits need moving/removing to get at everything.

Both 0 rings form rigid seal on transfer pipe to stat tubing..without them it will leak like a sieve.

If you used the old original ones they may have become dislodged when refitting so thats probably the source of you leak :y
