I remember reading "Eagle in the sky" in one day....but when I read another one of his books it was largely the same.  He must have had a great life, :y

Or Robert Ludlum. You could have any four of his novels to hand, read 100 pages of each in a random sequence and barely notice.

There are worse authors than any of these though. Stephen King for example.

Tom Clancey's early books were very good. Since he has started collaborating with other authors they are rather formulaic. Larry Bond did a tremendous novel about  North Korea invading the South, think it's called Red Pheonix. Though Bond did collaborate with Clancy too on other titles.

They were always formulaic. What lifted them above other 'airport novels' was his ability to combine a complicated multi-strand story and plot with thoroughly researched details in a way that wasn't boring or forced. His characters started out interesting, but that's because they were already developed. That meant they got less interesting the more they were used. They do a lot of talking because of what they were and did, but his dialogue wasn't up to much.

And those complicated plots started at the just about plausible end of what if? and declined into running out of ideas.

I always assumed that he was a motoring writer who drove a bit, but apparently he was a talented racing driver first who could also write very well.

I remember him in BTCC back in the days of Capris, Dolomites etc. He was pretty good driver in his day.

Very sad news. He was a racer through and through. He lived for it, and when he finally faced the inevitable and sold the team, I had a feeling he would be long for this world.
He started running his team from a phone box in the street outside his house, and through sheer willpower and brain power built it into one of the greatest teams in history. It had a sad decline, but in the era of teams being owned by global corporations there was no rrom left for someone like him, which shows what the sport has now become.
R.I.P. Sir Frank.

Agreed. We wont see likes frank Williams  ( or Hamilton for that matter) in F1 . The new breed is Stroll and Mazepin.

Sad but true. Alfa have a Chinese driver next year who has Chinese companies queueing up to sponsor the team.  :(
