Strange Light Set Up/Wiring
« on: 06 June 2007, 20:49:49 »

Hello all,

A slightly strange question maybe, but please bare with me here, any help that can be offered would be much appreciated.

I have a 52 plate 2.2CDX, which I use for work - as part of my work on my previous motor I set up an extra light unit, as I do work in fields and on events, which needs the extra lighting; something like the light set up you have bolted on the front of rally cars.

I have the actual unit, and it clips on and off the front with a minimum of modification - but I'm stuck on the wiring up on my Omega, I've always used battered old bangers of cars with very simple wiring and space under the bonnet. It's also the first time I've had to worry about resale value on my work motor!

The idea I had was to disconnect the front fogs and instead divert the power running to them to my light unit, so that I could switch it on via the front fogs switch, as front fogs aren't needed for MOTs, and TBH I never use them.

The question is, how? I have no idea what cables are what under the bonnet, and can't work out where the 12V power cables are for the fogs. If I could find them, I'd happily interrupt them to send them to the leads for my lighting unit, but not sure where they are, and where the best place is to interrupt them.

If anyone can post pics with help, it would be much appreciated; or if anyone has another idea how I can do it without destroying half the motor and needing specialist tools, again, I'd owe you a pint!

Thanks

Jimbo

PS - the lights look a little like this, except much more bodged, dirty and mounted a bit rough, obviously:

The light unit I'd like to keep completely seperate from the normal lighting like headlights etc, as I use it independantly, and they are adjustable so I can work in front of them.

I'd but inclined to pick up the fog light feed, and relay it, taking the 12v straight from battery via a fuse...

If I were you, I'd run a separate fused supply from the battery positive terminal, through the contacts of an appropriately rated relay to your lights, to avoid overloading the car's wiring. Then connect the relay coil to the fog light feed. The easiest place to connect this would be behind one of the fog lights itself, I'd say.

You've only got to intercept one wire from the vehicle's loom so it should be easy to remove when you sell it on.

These guys will have all the bits you need and their prices are pretty good:

Thanks for both your replies; I'll have to start translating it into something I can understand now... I'm afraid I talk a good job, but most of my knowledge extends to clipping and mating wires together...  :y

Thanks for your help

Ok.....

Connect a suitably sized power cable to the battery + terminal and fit an in line fuse in it rated to suit the running of four bloody great bog spot lights (post the wattage of each one and we can advise on cable size and fuse rating). Connect this wire to a switched contact on a relay.

Take the ouput of the wire and using the same large cable connect it to the + feed on your spot lights.

Take the 0V connection on your spot light and connect it to eitehr a good chassis connection or the battery - clamp.

Take one side of the relay coil contact and connect this also to the battery - connection.

Connect the other side of the relay coil to the switched + feed to the rear of one of the fog lamps.
