Squeeling on startup
« on: 19 November 2007, 20:56:32 »

My car has recently started sqeeling on startup, this lasts varying amounts of time.  Originally I thought it was auxilliary belt but it doesnt sound like any other car i've had when its had a slipping aux belt.  Could it be anything else making a squeeling sound?  And why would it go away / get quieter over time?  How do you check / adjust the tension of the aux belt?  It should be ok as it was changed when I had the cambelt done.

Cheers,

Richard

If its a bearing on its way out it could stop the noise as it warms up ....:(

I would suggest removing the aux belt completly, then run the engine for a few minutes when cold ... if the noise has gone it is one of the items on the auxbelt....  if it is still there at least you now know what it isn't !!!

Is the noise coming from just in front of the passenger wheel, and lasts for about 30 - 45s?

No it does sound like its coming from the front of the engine in the middle.  It changes with engine revs also.  What bearings could be going?  Are they easy to change?

Check the cambelt and pulleys are OK. One slipped cambelt is even for this week!

2 minutes with no water pump won't do any harm ..... and would aid diagnosis ?

Hang on....it sounds like the secondary air injection pump to me.

Noise lasts for up to 2 mins depending on how cold the engine is. Screeching sound. Very common. A quick and perfectly satisfactory fix is to unplug the pump, or remove the fuse.

Oh and it changes sound with the revs because the battery voltage goes up and down a little.

Hi

I had this on my Omega recently. It too was hard to pinpoint where the noise was coming from. Long story short it was the aux belt, fairly easy to change but make a note of where the belt runs before you take it off.
You can't adjust them as it is done automatically by a spring loaded pulley. If you do replace it I would recomend using the genuine VX part.

I think they stop squealing with increased revs or when the engine is warm because there is less load on the belt.

You could try the following. As soon as it stops put the air con on and your headlights, heated rear screen and see if it comes back. Both the alternator and air con are driven by the belt.

To be honest I thought it was coming from the Water Pump orginally, so I put some WD 40 over it and when that didn't cure it over the other pulleys too. I did think it was the Cams as it is that area, not getting enough oil up when cold but its not a fast squeaking noise if that makes any sense, more like a pulley or even the air con but it is definately up near the Cam Covers, Water Pump, Plenum area :-?
