General Discussion Area / Trying to keep myself ‘purposeful’
« on: 19 February 2026, 15:33:43 »
Used the old Kenwood Chef A901E to knead some dough the other day and noticed it smoking like a docker and grinding its gears.

As the topic suggests I had a go at it. For the sake of £6.50 for new snubber R/C components and a suppression cap, some Duckhams grease and a couple of hours ‘enjoyment’, it’s now sweet as a nut. So substantially built too. Not like a modern appliance that’s pressed and snapped together so it busts as soon as you look at it.

And it’s over 40 years old. FORTY!!

Before...

After...

P.S. Admins, is there a problem with the Notify function on the forum? Most likely it's just me, but I used to get topic and board notifications no problem.

Now I get none. I’ve checked all my profile settings and all looks good but just now I looked on the forum and there were new posts on boards I was watching but I got no pings…

General Car Chat / The Victor...
« on: 05 February 2026, 13:42:43 »
Just found these - scanning through old slide transfers...

My 1967 Victor 101 FC. A little surface rust as you can see! Roof and boot were quite clean - the rest was very flat.
Ford Transit carburettor, dynamo changed to an alternator.
The rest of it was mostly stock - shame I had nowhere to store it at the time it to sort it out.
It went to a demolition derby 'race' for £30.

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / F/S Omega Roof Box Kit
« on: 03 November 2025, 15:58:32 »
OK, it's not specific to an Omega, but the shape of the box looks great on an Omega Estate, so...

FAPA Alto 460 roof box.
Top quality piece of kit (not flimsy nonsense), with instructions, roof bar brackets, keys, load securing net, garage roof storage straps and brackets. Gas struts have lost most of their strength now, apart from that it's in great condition, having only been used maybe 4 or 5 times. You will of course need roof bars to mount the box to.
External 1940mm long x 780mm wide x 370mm high.
Internal about 1840mm long x 700mm wide x 335mm high.
Capacity is 460 litres.
£100

Thule 853-2341-01 Roof Bars (x2).
Includes 755 foot pack. Overall length approx 1040mm
Usable rail width is approx 830mm to 980mm. With instructions and keys.
Used on my estate with 940mm wide roof rails.
£40 the pair.

Thule FreeRide 530 roof mounted bike carriers (x2).
For carrying bikes in an upright position. Length approx. 1460mm, max. width approx 210mm. With instructions and keys. Needs roof bars.
£40 the pair.

We're not going to use these again at our age, so someone else should be able to get some use out of the kit...!

Omega General Help / Belt Kit & Antifreeze question.
« on: 17 October 2025, 14:51:37 »
Hi, does anyone see any issues if I buy a new cambelt kit now to fit in 3 or so years time? Pump too. I just want to have them ready when the time comes - and it will be time, not mileage - maybe less than10k. I ask because AutoDoc are doing a good price right now. £167 now vs £210 6 months ago. Contitech CT990K2.

Also, trying to find GM 93165162 (or GM6277M?) antifreeze is getting harder. What do you guys use in your Omegas?

Omega Gallery / Got there in the end - AND a new MOT...
« on: 08 September 2025, 14:41:38 »
Without the help of OOF I would never have got here. Cheers and thanks to everyone...!!

A few before & after pix to kick off. Might be useful as reference...

Everything that came off was cleaned up...

Clean and ready for new gaskets...

The amount of eggs I had to eat to get all these parts boxes...

Old & new valves...

Heads clean & ready for re-assembly...

At last - all back in - that mileage will haunt me for the rest of my days...

And then some photos of the actual car...

Omega General Help / Simple Code Reader
« on: 17 June 2025, 13:14:48 »
Could anyone confirm if this code reader/clearer will work OK with my Y26SE engine?

https://amzn.eu/d/aFb8E57

Not looking for the full two bob solution, just basics so I don’t have to count flashes.
And I also want to clear all the nasty codes from before.

Omega General Help / Temp gauge & drip issue.
« on: 14 June 2025, 11:55:20 »
Hi, just when all was going so well!

Firstly I noticed two steady drips each side of the engine towards the rear.
After a hefty panic attack I caught some of the liquid and it was cold and clear (i.e. not coolant). Am I right in thinking this is just aircon condensate? It did seem to slow when I turned the aircon off?

Secondly, my temp gauge refuses to move off the bottom.
Heater works fine, all pipes burped and hot, so thermostat is OK.
I’ve either knocked something off when reassembling or I DID get those two identical connectors the wrong way round.

I’ll have to wait until it’s cooled down before checking.

What’s that little t-shaped connection in the centre of the bridge?
Is that a sensor as well?

Omega General Help / Can anyone identify this pipe?
« on: 03 June 2025, 13:20:23 »
It's hard plastic, not rubber, looks like it's never had a connector on it. It just hangs down behind the 1-3-5 head.
It's looped over the back of the engine, goes downwards on the nearside, then seems to go along the side of the transmission also on the nearside.

Is it just a vent of some sort? Or should I be trying to find where it fits?

I know it's nothing to do with that valve that's also in the pic.

Omega General Help / Rebuild parts enquiry
« on: 13 May 2025, 16:09:16 »
Hi folks, I'm starting to compile a (frightening) shopping list to put the top of my engine back together - after 'massive clattering noise'.

I fully understand about GM cylinder head gaskets and cam cover gaskets, so we can take that as read.

However, there are lots of 'minor' gaskets (e.g. exhaust), o-rings, nuts, bolts etc.. that I need. And T55 cylinder head bolts. And valves, and stem seals.

What are the opinions of Victor Reinz, Febi Bilstein and FAI. Elring crop up a lot but are apparently 'not that good'.
I expect Contitech for the cambelt kit in due course as well.

Any opinions would be most appreciated.

Omega General Help / Massive Clattering Noise
« on: 05 March 2025, 11:36:50 »
Morning, just got the Omega (2.6 V6 auto) out of the garage this morning - no problems. Left it turned off on the drive for 30 mins or so.

Got back in to go out and the engine's making a terrible clattering noise. Switched off - looked for anything obvious, saw nothing - tried again and the noise is worse. One more try to get it back in the garage and the noise was terrible then the engine completely died.
In the old days I'd have said the noise was like very slack tappets, but louder. No codes showing except for a 1612 from ages ago.

Can anyone shed any light? I obviously can't move it now for fear of causing terminal damage.

Many thanks.

Omega General Help / Wishbone & bush advice?
« on: 18 July 2024, 11:27:26 »
Hi all, I need some advice with my 66k mile Omega (doing about 1500 miles a year).

Last MOT I had an advisory that said "Nearside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement inner front bush". Sensibly I expect this to mean new wishbones & bushes. I've seen Lemforder, parts 27735-02 and 27734-02 for about £140 left, £116 right.

I don't have the strength in my hands to tackle this, so does anyone know of a trustworthy place in the Nottingham/Derby area that would fit these? Or indeed a strong OOF member!!

Many thanks.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Alternator Problem??
« on: 05 August 2021, 08:12:10 »
Hi,, just setting off on first leg of our holiday - Alternator/Charging light blinked then stayed on. Dashcam switched off a few mins later (low voltage) then engine management light came on. So I got off the motorway and back home asap. Pedal Error code is giving me 0571, which I'm assuming is because of low voltage rather than being the actual fault (0571 is Cruise control/brake switch 'A' circuit malfunction).

Battery is at 11 volts, just enough to start, but no increase when engine is running. Does this sound like alternator, or are there other things I can check first?

Cheers,
Dave

Omega General Help / 2.6 V6 front engine noise
« on: 11 April 2015, 11:25:56 »
Hi all,
I'm getting an odd noise which is difficult to pin down - coming from the front of the engine definitely but can't make out where. Sounds like a mix of chafing and rattling at the same time as if something's loose or wobbly.

I was thinking of removing the aux belt then running the engine again to double-check that something along this belt path is the culprit.

Would this be the right way to proceed, do you reckon?

Cheers,
