Bring back the helpful tax disc reminder, I say..... :y
I keep MOTs in line with the date of registration which makes ot easier to remember - if a newly purchased vehicles MOT is out of sync with the registration date with some 'helpful' garage giving a subsequent owner a 12 month MOT on purchase, I still retest it so it coincides......

Yes, I've got that free app too, and it's very good - it gets the info direct from the DVLA.
You can store all your own vehicles or any previous search you may have a future interest with in your 'garage', so you can check the indvidual dates of expiry of all your vehicles in one go with the touch of a button, rather than going into to the DVLA site for each particular vehicle.

Omega General Help / Re: Retaining screws for rear brake disc
« on: 26 August 2022, 13:09:18 »
It may depend on the model or era, but the retaining bolt / screw on my 2.6 /3.2 vented discs is certainly not a countersunk tapered screw as suggested....
As Andy has stated they are a flat seat Allen key head bolt / screw, with a shoulder before the start of the thread.
GM part no 90278945, size M10x1.25
There is a recess of approx 1/8" deep on the hub area of the disc to accommodate it rather than a tapered recess with a countersunk fastener.

Omega General Help / Re: Aircon panel

Remove the radio and ashtray.

Remove the trim.

Swap out the panel and put it all back together.

If it takes more than twenty minutes,  you probably shouldn't have started.

That's the nice thing about this forum - helpful, friendly replies to any issue or question that members really appreciate, and they must leave with a feeling of gratitude for the help or information posted, rather than 'I wish I'd never asked'....
Did I miss a step?

Not at all.
Except for the understanding that not everyone has had the same experience of repairing their Omegas that you may have, and the possibly somewhat condescending suggestion that if it can't be done in 20 minutes, they possibly shouldn't have attempted or started the job.
I remember as a spotty faced teenager changing the clutch on a 850 Mini - took me ages, whereas a subsequent clutch change (in a different Mini ;D) was accomplished in a fraction of the time. Life's a learning curve, no matter at what age.

Maybe worth a try. I've bought new old stockTriumph parts off him previously, and he has a fair amount of stock for all makes.

It's a totally different machine; heavier, black in colour, in a sturdy red / black carry case - not the cheap blown moulded plastic case that the standard green models come in. It's also hard to beat the 5 years no quibble warranty. Mulwaukee are the only real contenders for comparison purposes, in output etc but they are far more expensive and only have 1 years warranty, which can be extended on line but not for 5 years.

It's not uncommon for brand new vehicles to have panels repainted before being even registered or being purchased  from new. Damage occurring 'in transit' is the usual reason for repairs being carried to new vehicles.

I've got one that I use with a 4 ah battery. They are ok for whizzing wheel nuts off once cracked with a breaker bar, but they generally struggle with wheel nuts that have been on for a period of time (as we all know they always seen tighter on removal than when they were originally fitted ::))
However, I also have a Lidl Parkside 'Performance' 20v cordless impact wrench, which delivers a massive 1896nm of 'nut busting' torque, and I have yet to find any nut / bolt that it won't loosen virtually immediately. Heavier than the 400nm version, but a cracking piece of kit, with a 5 year warranty (Lidl are extremely good in honouring their warranties if ever needed). I waited for the Performance version to come into UK stores, but gave up after 12 months, and ordered one from Germany for approx £140 delivered.

General Car Chat / Re: cracked rim
« on: 18 August 2022, 10:37:53 »
It's difficult to say what has caused that crack - it's not the usual buckle on an alloy that you would expect from a pothole / kerb impact. All I can think of if the wheel has had some form of impact on another part of the rim which in turn has caused the rim to flex somewhat in the process, and not being  strong enough to absorb the flexing, has caused the edge to crack at another place, rather than buckle near the point of impact? Can't think of any other cause...?

Big rims, ultra low profile tyres, potholes = cracked rims.  :(

They're low profile, but wouldn't say they're ultra low. 265/45 x 20
I can't remember now what profile I had on my Omega .... 235/45 x 17 ??? if so, the wall is actually taller on the ML that it was on the Omega.
I've had it suggested that straddling speed 'pillows' is the problem  :-\
Straddling speed pillows (everyone does it, all the time) might be bad for your alignment, by forcing the wheels outwards from the bottom, but I really can't see how it would crack a rim like that. The tyre would deform, but not enough to bust the rim, surely? If it really was the case, I'm sure we'd see a lot more of this.
Just follow any vehicle and you'll see them doing it, it's a natural compensation to stop one side of the vehicle taking a hit.

The weakest part of an alloy rim is the inner edge of the rim where there is no strength from the spokes. Straddling 'pillows' puts unnecessary strain on the weakest part of the rim. If the profile is such that the tyre absorbs the deforming, no problem, but low profile tyres can result, in the worse case scenario, damage to the rim, which is then usually only noticed when balancing replacement tyres.
I'd rather drive between two of them with one wheel, and drive over the top of the adjacent 'pillow' with the other wheel, which is a pain.
I hate speed humps, 'pillows', chicanes and all forms of traffic calming measures with a passion, as in reality, they are vary rarely well thought out in their planning.

Yes, both nearside and offside solenoids are the same - the rears are different from the front however.

https://www.yuasa.co.uk/info/technical/start-stop-vehicle-battery-replacement-warning/

My AGM battery on my Audi failed under warranty, and was replaced by Audi, but the replacement AGM had to be programmed to the car. Certain electrical components won't function correctly without the programming. I understand that AGM and EFB batteries should be replaced with like for like. No doubt owners have gone against this recommendation, but that is the advice. The link above gives some insight into the reasoning behind it.

Cocoa shunters ;D never heard that before !

Can't claim credit for it myself. Many years ago I bought a copy of Viz magazine. Included in it was a copy of Roger's Profanisaurus.

Not wanting to fuel a debate about the various name references :D, but also known as 'chutney ferrets'? :y
