I watched a fella texting away on the M1 the other day .. two cars in front of a marked police car.....

so if you could see them with your untrained eye ...... why didn't someone else? Or more to the point, why didn't they do something about it?

I'm not a Police Officer but I do know that you have to have a certain level of training to stop vehicles on a 'fast road' so there may be a chance that they may not have had the relevant permit/training to stop the driver on a Motorway.

Right...can see how the rubber unclips. Rust does not look too bad, but I will remove the sill covers. Is there any special technique to remove said covers. Had a search but did not find anything specific. I know there are plastic clips....but I don't want to break them :y

There's a screw that holds the front wheel arch liner to the sill cover at the bottom of the front wing underneath the car, a couple of push-through plastic plastic rivets at the rear wheel arch at the other end of the sill panel. There are about 5 or 6 push-on plastic caps along the underneath of the sill. IIRC that is everything in the way of fastenings removed. Sitting facing the car you need to pull the sill towards you. Don't pull it down from one end or the other as the clips will break as they are brittle. Don't worry if you do as they can still be bought from Vx for about £2 each

Good set of pics beginning of this thread. I've been going through my CDX in a similar manner trying to keep the rot under control, but one thing I didn't do was pull the rubber strip off the top of the sill.

I notice on yours there is a bit of grot around the rivetty things.........  was this apparent before you removed the strip?   :o

Thanks for the comments. With regards to the weatherstrip, no, there was no sign of the rust before I removed it. Glad I did. All clear on the driver's side though.

The sill length door seal is an interference fit along its' length with small painted rivets as shown in the pic below. It simply pulls of with a reasonable tug. Grab the rubber (but not too close to the ends) and pull towards you.

This firm is familiar to me for some reason, maybe they have previosly had a Lotus Carlton for sale.

They also had a 2000 728i for sale for £11k with 31k miles  ;D ;D ;D ;D I love the E38 7 Series but £11k for a 16 year old entry level poverty 7 is laughable.

My first fond memory of the S-Class was in 1999 following a brand new T-reg 320CDi that was lent to Top Gear Mag a friend and I followed in parallel with a 6ft gap at 50mph while a freelance motoring photographer hanging out of the boot. Took some concentration...

I do like that shape S-Class but I think the rust like a son of a bitch, worse than Omegas. I suppose with next to no miles it should be pretty tidy assuming it's been kept indoors.

Pics will be good though :)

Cheers guys  ;)

I am in the fortunate position that I had the unintentional foresight to purchase a house on a corner plot 18 years ago and I had a 440 square foot double garage with a pit to do this sort of stuff.

I hope to get over to a local restoration place to have a chat with them as I plan to strip every paintable piece off and get a whole new suit applied.

The notion is growing several heads as I may remove the engine and box while it goes in and the take front and rear subframes when I get it back to replace bushes and paint bits.

May be an opportune time to replace the torque converter as it's a little slushy now - it doesn't creep in drive on a flat surface any more.

Who's wondering how bad the rot is under their sill covers  ::) Time to have a peek  :-X

I was and thankfully, hardly anything...

The Aussies don't apply any corrosion protection as such and certainly nowhere near the amount we have on our cars.

Thanks all for the comments.

It's been tough for the kids but we set the expectation with the first two expiring that the third was likely to go.

Not having rabbits again, our Guinea pigs seem far more robust.
