Don't touch a Mazda Steve, it's a shame really because mechanically mine was totally reliable + the 2 litre diesel never returned less than 46mpg & 61mpg on a long run, traded it in for the 2.6 Omega which was an excellent choice.

The only cars I know that are immune to rust are the Alfasud and Lancia Beta.

I got rid of the Mazda in 2010/2011 as I could see how the car was deteriorating just looked at its MOT history FV51FUE & it certainly went downhill after that.

There are quite a few 8-10 year old 3's and 6's about with no signs of rust, and no mention of corrosion on MOT's. Tony Terbs has a 6, I believe, and was very happy with it last I heard.
But no matter, it's just one of the many I would consider.

Think Mazda fixed the rust problems around 2012 to be fair. The ones with the Gary boys rear light cluster of choice, mid noughties, were terrible for rust. I had a late 1980s hatch and was impressed how well screwed together it was.
Add, these are the 626 i'm talking about.

On another note newer  Mazda 6/3Mps turbocharged versions are certainly not slow.

They do. Although that MG would have been £3k anywhere else.

My sentiments entirely , I would happily have paid 3K for a "toy" but 5K + was out of the question.

Anyway, the answer's an MX 5. It's always an MX 5. :y

It would be, if it had another 75 or so horses.  ;)

Your wish and all that....

Or an Omega V6 for a fraction of the price and work. Smaller, and easier to fit than a Jag

Ian's MGB engine was originally bought from someone who was going to do just that until he realised just how rotten his MX5 was. Which shouldn't have been a surprise, because it was an MX5. Shaped object 8)

The thing with the MX-5 is that it's got a chassis that just makes you want to thrash the living daylights out of it and at the sort of power levels they have as standard (160 odd BHP from the 2.0 NC we have) you can do that all day long without it ever getting seriously out of shape or losing your licence. There'll always be long straight bits of road where you wish for a bit more grunt, but on the twisty bits where it counts it's more satisfying to have to stir the stick a bit to keep it going rather than have a big V6 where you just leave it in 4th and use the torque.

I think if I were going to upgrade one, I'd go forced induction. In fact, the ecoboost I've got in the Jag started off as the Mazda L series anyway, so I wouldn't mind betting it would drop straight in and give you 240 BHP. Why you'd mess about with a V6 I don't know.
