General Discussion Area / If it wasn't SWMBO I wouldn't believe it.
« on: 19 January 2009, 20:11:53 »
Sitting at my desk this afternoon and get a phone call from wife saying she's sitting in the Rover 25 outside the front of the house, but can't get out because the cloth tag on the end of the zip on her fleece has been jammed in the safety belt release clip when she put the belt on and it won't open. I got the belt released OK, but I had to rip the tag  off after unsuccessful attempts to ease it out, inevitably leaving part of the tag in the clip. Now it won't operate at all.
Can these things be opened up and closed again satisfactorily, or is it a new stalk, do you think?

Hi Guys and Gals,
Wisely or not, I'm thinking of trying to upgrade an old PC which I haven't used for 5 years, as a project, and wonder whether this is a sensible proposition. The main purpose would be to drag myself into the 21st. century knowledge-wise, and to provide a second outfit for flight sim. gaming, internet access, word processing etc.
There seems to be plenty of info. and guides on the Internet, which I think I could follow OK, but I would appreciate an opinion from the experts on whether the idea is feasible for a raw beginner with no basic knowledge. Cost considerations would not be critical, and I'd like to be able to upgrade further in the future if my skills improve, and/or I live long enough. 8-)
Opinions would be much appreciated.
Bill.

General Discussion Area / Have I got a serious security problem?
« on: 12 December 2008, 08:18:45 »
Following the threads about anti-spyware, I downloaded Spotzilla from one of the links and used the full scan facility. it identified two quarantined items, 1 trojan and 1 hacktool from an 'old H/d' file which I haven't opened in years, but wanted me to subscribe to remove them. Norton and XoftSpy, which I use regularly never identify these and give me a clear bill of health.
I decided to un-install Stopzilla, but was asked to submit a survey form as to why I wanted to get rid, which I simply closed without completing. The uninstall seems to have worked, (all reference to the programme has disappeared), but Norton will not now launch from any of my icons or from the programmes file.
Is it likely that the Stopzilla programme is responsible, am I in trouble security wise, and how can I rectify the problem, please?
I'm concerned because I use internet banking, andI've  changed passwords as a first step.
Malwarebytes' Anti-malware has identified no infected files or malicious software.
I'd very much appreciate an expert's help.
Bill.

Was the strange post at 08.15 today removed as a scam?
Just interested.

General Discussion Area / Rover 25. Power steering U.S.
« on: 02 September 2008, 19:36:36 »
SWMBO's Rover 25 turbo diesel power steering isn't working, and she's suffering because of arthritis in her hands.
Will have to be first job when we get back from Newent. Could some kind expert tell me the main things to look for so that I don't waste too much time chasing unlikely causes?
Have thought of pump and drivebelt and vacuum hoses, but is there anything else that is a common cause of failure. How can I test the various components? The engine's running fine, so I doubt if it's vacuum related. (Or am I talking nonsense?).
Comments would be very much appreciated.

General Discussion Area / Lovely 2.6 estate.
« on: 27 August 2008, 21:22:13 »
I seem to have a problem. My 2.6l estate is running perfectly with no performance issues at all.
What am I doing wrong? (apart from putting my head on the block and tempting fate).

General Discussion Area / Infallible ATM cashpoints?
« on: 16 August 2008, 09:34:32 »
Just got back from hols. to read in local freebie newspaper that my local cashpoint machine was delivering double the amount of cash ordered for the best part of half a day. Apparently the police had to be called to disperse a queue of about 50 people to whom the news had seemingly been spread, by mobile phones, by delighted customers. Their parked cars had completely blocked all the access roads.
Apparently the suppliers had loaded the machine incorrectly, causing the wrong denomination of notes to be delivered. (?).
If this can be believed it poses some questions, such as 'what happens if they deliver less than the amount ordered', and 'what would I have done if I'd had such a pleasant surprise'. (And how can I get a relative employed by the supplying firm.  ;)).
The bank hasn't decided whether they will ask customers to refund the money.
What would be your moral stance on this?

General Discussion Area / Still some good sellers on ebay!
« on: 16 August 2008, 09:45:21 »
I've just purchased a replacement PCB for an obsolete Carver Fanmaster heater from 'paulscaravanparts' on ebay, and was delighted with the way he performed.
I made a best offer at 9pm. Wednesday, it was accepted at 9.40pm, paid through Paypal at 10pm, and it arrived by Royal Mail express delivery at 9.30am Friday. He also replied to a query, after receipt, within 2 hours.
It's not easy to do better than that.
Highly recommended.

General Discussion Area / You shall go to The Open, Shyboy!
« on: 16 July 2008, 19:46:02 »
Had decided not to bother this time even though it's just down the road, but have just been given a 4-day free pass and reserved car parking by a friend. Can't pass that up, so tomorrow, at least, is going to be an exhausting day roaming Royal Birkdale, watching the golf magician's ply their trade.
If you watch, I'll give you all a wave.  8-) :-*

General Discussion Area / Choosing a laptop
« on: 11 July 2008, 08:22:49 »
Rightly or wrongly, wisely or not, I'm about to buy SWMBO a laptop for her 69th. birthday. It must be well known on this forum that I'm a bit of a fully fledged dumbo when it comes to understanding the mystical world of computers, but I do try.... and try and try and try.
It's only needed for e-mailing and casual Internet access, no gaming or porn channels, although the way my wife can talk it had better have reasonable capacity.
Can anyone suggest some decent models, or give me some good lines of enquiry, please?
Bill.

General Discussion Area / What would you have done?
« on: 07 July 2008, 10:17:03 »
Saturday night at 10.30pm., traffic light junction in Ormskirk, Lancs, pulled up at red light behind a Police patrol car. There were no other vehicles waiting at any of the five roads controlled by these lights, but when they turned green for us, he just sat there and didn't move. Then, as they turned to amber, he pulled away, leaving me at the red. Annoying to say the least, as they take ages to go through the full cycle.
Normally, I would give a blip on the horn, or lights at night, to wake up the driver, but thankfully didn't in this case. Do you think he was most likely occupied on his radio, in a daze, or just waiting to see if I showed any signs of aggression, perhaps through having had a drink, (which I hadn't)?
How would you have re-acted?
Bill.

General Discussion Area / Newent site
« on: 03 July 2008, 10:39:03 »
Just looked at their website. Facilities look fantastic. Get your deposits paid folks!
The name of the site is 'Pelerine', which apparently means 'a person who travels about' or 'a wanderer'.
How can The Boy possibly enjoy himself on a pikey field? :o :o

General Discussion Area / Some families do suffer.
« on: 20 March 2008, 14:12:42 »
My 42 year old son went to the funeral of a past footballing mate, of similar age, yesterday, who died after a supposed 95% success rate bone marrow transplant for his particular type of cancer. As if that wasn't bad enough for his two sons, (one was 21 on Monday), we've just learned that his wife has succumbed to breast cancer today, having been in a hospice for some months.
Some people do have an inordinate amount of trials in their lives. I just hope the boys and the respective parents manage to cope with a terrible situation.
Spare them some thoughts.

Just realised I can now ask for the loan of a locking kit when the time comes for the 2.6l.
