Cam covers leaking
« on: 06 October 2023, 11:36:29 »

Hi all, I fitted new gaskets about 2 yrs ago on my 3.2 cam covers and they are still leaking. The gasket was applied with black silicone, on the bed and behind the gasket, left for 24hrs before running the car to allow the silicone to go off. I need to re-do the gaskets as oil is getting onto the coil pack and around the spark plugs (I have just changed the spark plugs, coil packs ok and cleaned out). I know that the plastic covers are not great but don't want the expense of changing to ally ones. Any ideas? Thanks :y

Check the covers are actually straight first, although warping is nowhere near as common as rough handed mechanics claim.

Also, did you just put the sealant in the places as per the guide? And used a torque wrench for the 8Nm nuts?

I've only ever had 1 of my many Omega with leaking cam covers, this was  on my 1st ever Omega, once the Gorilla of a ham fisted Mechanic had learned the error of his ways, never happened again.

Hi, thank you for your comments, I did fit new o rings and cleaned out the breather, torqued the bolts so maybe not enough silicone in the right places. I will have another attempt in the new year as the oil leaking is not excessive at the moment. Cheers  :)

Hello
I have just been reading something in german about a crank breather that has a sort of one way membrane that aparently 'sticks open' at old age...

Will post the link here  maybe it will work

New to me, someone with knowledge might have an opinion, didn't even know it was a thing.

It's a flappy thing. Eventually dissolves into all the oily shite. If you take the box apart, there's a couple of cast vanes and iirc the flap closed off the larger end of the breather under certain conditions.

Never taken one apart, but people have and then had to spot weld or otherwise rerivet the box back together.

Breaking the box open is about the only way of cleaning it out 100%
