Mobile danger?
« on: 21 January 2008, 13:12:14 »

I got this e-mail this morning:

PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY.

Do not charge your mobile phone the whole night and DON'T keep it near you while charging.  IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY!

I HOPE YOU'RE NOT DOING THIS!!! Never, ever answer a cell phone while it is being RECHARGED!! A few days ago, a person was recharging his cell phone at home. Just at that time, a call came in and he answered it with the instrument still connected to the outlet. After a few seconds, electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers.

He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Cell phones are a very useful modern invention. However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death. Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet!

FORWARD THIS TO THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER IN YOUR LIFE .

The mail came with a few pics showing charred bedclothes, melted phone and burned fingers (ugh!).  :o

I know there are quite a few mobile-savvy folks on here. Any comments?

I think that could be a bit OTT as any electrical item we use thats mains powered could kill if faulty.

Hmm. Smells iffy to me. I wouldn't be too worried.

I have come across phones that do silly things when charging but it's normally due to software issues. Have yet to receive a charred ear!  :o

yeh i was thinking myself (which is probably more dangerous than an electric shock anyway!!) that chances are it wont have been the phone directly at fault, but maybe his household electrics

this would have been brought to our attention a hell of alot sooner otherwise, being as something like 90% of the UK population has at least one mobile phone!

If you want to get to the bottom of a problem, ask on OOF.

In fact, I would not be surprised to see a newbie called Gordon asking about Northern Rock... ;D ;D

hummm i currently have 3 mobiles charging off my desk, i used one while it was being charged today.

Sounds like a load of pony to me.... i am guessing its american as its "cell"

I wish the americans would realise our system and use an earth in the plug!

phone draws very little power, so i suspect it was a faulty home wall socket.

Its standard chain mail 'virus'.  Don't forward on, the mail systems are busy enough as it is without this guff.
