After 11 years and 108,000 miles in my ownership....
« on: 09 March 2016, 20:35:21 »

My 2.2 has finally let me down, first time ever!

Keeps over heating, into the red and coolant light on  :'(

Coolant level was fine when it first overheated, all still there. Perhaps stuck stat? As going along at 20/30 temp stayed stable ish. Got up to a clear section, went to 40mph and shot up to 95. So pulled in.

Going to upgrade to AA Relay, as if this had been MrsT with little miss T things could be a lot worse. Currently awaiting said AA bod, while I'm eating a bloody terrible sandwich from a Mace shop at a BP station.

Huge thanks to TheBoy for the unexpected call and diagnosis efforts, very, very much apprieated.

Just hope I've not cooked the HG  :'( :'(

The sudden onset makes me suspect that the pump impeller has come loose on the pump shaft :-\

Little fatty thought water pump too, but I drove for around 15 mins at very low speed ( after it previously over-heated) and it's been ok. If it was circulating no coolant at-all, I'd expect it over heat super quickly? Not go 20 mins?

Low speed doesn't put much heat into the system so it might take a while to overheat if the pump isn't working well. But considering it's part of the cambelt system a faulty pump is likely to cause worse problems

Feking AA. Said they would be here in under an hour, now it's 2 hours  ::) >:(

When I get it back, will run a compression test, then pop out stat. Check that see what's what. Then pop water pump off.

Not sure I could run 2x 3.2 Elites Al  :(

You could then lpg the saloon, leaving the estate as the baby bus ;)

Lpg tank and plumbing could be simply swapped over, new front end kit and jobs a goodun...

2.2's LPG tank not suitable, not 4 hole...

But that is an option, LPG the 3.2 then look for a bus for MotherT. Probably a Zafira of some description. Costly, ~£1k to LPG. Plus could only do LPG via forum favours here. Plus a bus purchase.

Another option is put a 406 HDI into a commute role, as I know of a spotless one sitting idle.

As I can't fix a HG myself, getting it to towed anywhere like Brackley for a fix is not practical or cost effective.

I've normally always got a few spare cars you could use, FOC  :y

Be sad to see the 2.2 go!

Mr AA man stuck some pressure thing on coolant bottle. He says water pump too. No change in pressure when engine under load?

This reminds me, I must sell that LPG tank and buy the correct one for my needs.

Bloody useless AA service. Limping the old girl home. Done Feltham to Egham, but the climb near Royal Holloway was too much. So stopped again to let it cool down.

Been doing sub 30mph in 3rd or 4th gear, keeping revs down. Heaters on full too. It's going to be a looong night!
