After these many months finally got to have a reasonable look at the car.Compression test[cold engine] showed figures of 79 54 54 75[cylinders 1-4 respectively]number 2 spark plug was blacker than the other three which all appeared the same colour.Managed to get it to start, the revs surged between just under 1,000 to 2,000 three or four times settled for a couple of seconds at just below 1,000 rose up to 2,000 again before dropping back to an even idle just under 1,000.Large amounts of white smoke came from the tailpipe with wisps of white smoke from behind the heatshield just below exhaust manifold and taking the cap off the header tank produced lots of white smoke out of the tank although the coolant level seemed to remain constant.

Those compressions are very low if in psi, I would expect over 150 and maybe nearer 200 on a healthy motor

I also read the the older you are the less effects you get, maybe true as my 91 year old Mum had no ill effects at all

Thinking that through... If you have no reaction, does that mean you have already had Batflu  :-\

could be ..... I had the AZ jab with no effects/reaction other than a slightly tender arm for a couple of days. I had 'Batflu' back in October

I had the AZ jab and the only side effect was that I felt a bit hungover next morning, cleared by lunchtime though :y

General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?

Bloody French contraption again.  >:(
Since replacing the turbo I used it for work a few times but there was always a small pool of oil under the front in the morning.
I assumed the oil feed or return for the turbo must be the cause as they were the only oil related things disturbed during replacing the turbo.
Got it up on the ramps today and both of those were dry as a bone.
The o/s of the engine though (the front effectively, where the cambelt etc is) was covered in oil. Took a few parts off to try and have a look down the half inch gap between engine and inner wing, and I suspect the crank oil seal has stopped doing its job.
Cambelt is covered in oil, but thats due replacement anyway.
Im not a believer in coincidences, but I cant think why replacing the turbo would cause the crank oil seal to give up.  ??? :-\
Could really do without it at the moment as my time and car funds should be spent on the little jobs that need doing on the Boxster, so I can get it on the road at the start of next month.  :(

Check the breather system for blockages as this can cause oil to piss out anywhere it can,it can also bugger the seals in the turbo ::)

Odometers used to go back to zero once they passed 99999 miles.

but that was back when a car was lucky to go around the clock before the tin worm ate it  :y

A lot of the old stuff would have needed two decokes to get to 100k :o

« on: 10 March 2021, 09:43:29 »
its that time of year for a m.o.t & service. its an oil query - does a vehicle with stop - start tech need a special oil ( tech manual specifies  0/30 synthetic ) ,last year opie oil recommended Total Quartz which cost me nearly half of as much that ep were wanting. also if a new battery is ever needed , not a lot of change out of £ 450 whats wrong when that time comes of getting a good amperage & sticking that on.  :-\
well had the mot & service done yesterday . did surprise me a little tho when i went to pick it up , apparently it needed new rear brake pads. i thought a message would have appeared on the screen, every thing else does . if a tyre needs air i am warned so why not brake pads.

Not many Frenchies have pad wear indicators :(

General Car Chat / Re: Aircon regas Q
« on: 08 March 2021, 18:19:16 »
Well that went well. Not ;D

Too big a leak to pull a vacuum to do a leak test and add some dye to find the leak...  ::)

Next step would potentially be to re replace all the seals using genuine MB ones so that there's no discrepancy there (I used generic from a selection box matched as best as it possible) and replacing the compressor and condenser. That way, the only unchanged part would be the evaporator. Which would mean also the heater matrix as it's a dash out job...

Sooo... Ho diddly hum pom.

Try and adapt a tyre valve to add some air to system to find the hiss where it's leaking,my money is on the compressor as they are prone to seals failing if left ungassed for long periods

Edit, just seen that you replaced compressor,New part ?
