Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Major electrical gremlins
« on: 19 January 2010, 18:24:05 »
Something new to add to the list of strange goings on with my car.

I did a paperclip test earleir today.  After reading the faults i locked the car up and left it for a few hours.  When i left work i unlocked the car, noticing that the indicators did not flash.  Strange, they did earlier.  I opened the door to find the interior light wasnt working either.  When i put on the ignition the MID came on dimly but flickering.  it had reset itself as well.  The radio was powering up but that was also going on and off.

I drove it home half expecting it to go up in flames, but unfortunately it didnt.

when i got out the car and locked it, i noticed that the MID came back on and stays on.  The car will not deadlock either, only one press of the button works.

Is there anyone out there who has some idea of what the hell is going on???  :o

I was thinking possibly a grounding fault, but why would it affect so many different systems?  Any ideas where to start looking

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Melted Fuse (Fuel Pump)
« on: 15 July 2009, 09:26:57 »
The other day i was checking out the ECU to check what part number it was. When i opened the ECU cover, i noticed the fuel pump relay (brown one) with the 20a fuse mounted next to it.  This fuse was well and truely melted, and i mean melted, the plastic covering was moulded to the fuse holder.  i managed to prise the remains out and fit a new fuse, which seems to be ok.

Im curious why the fuse would have been in that state though?  The car had been getting more difficult to start recently, and on Monday morning i had to crank it over for a long time before it fired up.  Since putting the new fuse in it seems to start up much better, but i really cant see a reason for it being in that state.

Sorry for the essay, but i was wondering if any others have views on it.

Cheers, Pete

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / HID projector wiring
« on: 12 May 2009, 16:24:53 »
I bought a set of HID projector lights to replace the sorry excuse currently fitted to my car.

They didnt come with any wiring.

Am i right in understanding i change my current motors into the lights then just plug in the existing wiring into the plugs on the HID lights.  then just splice in the 2 pin ballast plug into the brown and yellow wires in the main plug

am i missing anything here.  i have a mate telling me i should fit a relay and power the ballasts straight from the battery??

Omega General Help / 2.5TD is it dying? error codes help needed
« on: 19 January 2010, 12:27:13 »
I have posted up before about some of the problems with my 2.5TD, i.e poor mpg, then it breaking down on me.

I am finding that it is getting difficult to start when it has warmed up.  Also the mpg figures seem poor.  The OBC tells em that i am getting 27.5 Avg, but on my calculations of 477 miles to 62 litres works out at 34.5mpg.  i managed to do 477 miles on this tank, but the OBC was telling me i have 60 miles remaining, but the car kept cutting out on me.

I dont know what is going on with this poxy car.  When i first got it it ran like a dream, but now it all seems to be going wrong.

Do i have a case of a failing fuel pump?  I have had all the lifter pump out of the tank and it all worked properly.  I cant see why it would be cutting out unless it was really empty, in which case my fuel sender has decided to play up.

Does any one have a suggestion of what i need to look for because im starting to loose the will with this car

Omega General Help / Fuel lifter pump removal
« on: 10 December 2009, 16:33:26 »
Well what a fun day ive had today.  After last nights fun and games of the car dying on me, i took the day off work to try and sort the issue.

Our initial findings were there was no fuel being pumped from the tank.  So suspect fuel lifter pump.  All being well i looked through the guide on here and thought that would be quite a quick job.

No such luck with my car.  It has (had) a nice towbar fitted, complete with massive steel plate in the boot, half covering the removable panel.

So i began stripping off the tow bar.  A job easier said than done, and after removing half the car i was left with this to deal with.

With the bumper removed i could see where most of the bolts were so i removed them and took off the main part of the towbar.  It was at this stage i took a look at the electric side of things.  I have not seen such shoddy workmanship before in my life.  There were bare wires everywhere, wires taped with electrical tape and scotch lock a plenty.  After a bit of a fight i finally traced all wires and removed the towbar.

This just left the plate with two bolts remaining.  After a crawl around under the car the plate was finally removed.

Now to the fuel pump. i removed the cover and undone the plastic retaining ring.  When i lifted the top off the tank, i could see that not only had the pipework pulled completely off the pump, but the wiring had come undone as well.  I removed the pump, cleaned the housing and filter and reassembled everything how it should be and slotted it all back in.

Having done this i popped the bonnet and cracked off the feed pipe to the fuel filter and turned the ignition on.  Diesel came gushing out everywhere making some what of a mess.  Big improvement over last night.  Unfortunately while i was cranking over to bleed the injectors the battery died on me, so it is currently on charge and i will try again a bit later.

All in all quite a fun day - not.  Although i am happy the towbar is gone and while i had the bumper off i removed the chrome trim as it was damaged, plus i hate chrome.  I have had an electrical issue recently with the check computer telling me i had a bulb out, even though they were all working.  I am going to put that down to the towbar wiring, after seeing the state of it.

Fingers crossed for a few hours time, heres hoping it fires up for me

Omega General Help / Poor MPG on 2.5TD
« on: 07 December 2009, 13:43:20 »
Recently my MPG has been getting less and less.  A few weeks back after passing its MOT i serviced my car.  New filters and oil change, including a full pot of diesel magic in the fuel filter.  Since then i have been getting less and less MPG.  When i got the car i could go nearly 600 miles to a tank, i am now struggling to get 400 miles, which equated to less than 30MPG.

Now i noticed this week that with the cold weather it hasnt been getting up to temperature, so i have a new thermostat on order which will be fitted at the weekend along with a full coolant flush.

It seems strange to me that it has got so bad since i did the service.  I know the stat wouldnt have been helping, making the car run  on cold run (rich), but is there anything else that could be an issue.

Also, when cold, the engine sometimes hesitates and the eml flashes on.  This only happens when you lift off the throttle.  If you press the throttle again quickly the car will try to throw you through the windscreen.  This seems to happen as i change gear and the revs drop past 2000-1500 rpm.  If i let the revs drop to idle before letting up the clutch it is fine, but if i mistime it, it seems like it is choking the engine.

The eml light doesnt stay on, just flashes, and there are no fault codes stored.

Sorry for the essay, but i would like to try and fix these issues sooner rather than later, its costing a fortune in diesel

Omega General Help / MV6 suspension on 2.5 TD
« on: 21 July 2009, 11:56:27 »
I understand that the suspension fitted to MV6 models was slightly lowered and stiffened.

I have recently put 18's on my mig, and wanted to lower it slightly.  I dont want a 40mm drop, about 20-25 would do me.  Im not sure how much lower the MV6 were, but would it be noticable?

My main worry is the weight up front.  Obviously the BMW lump is pretty heavy.  Would the MV6 suspension cope with the extra bit of weight?

Also did the MV6 just run different springs and dampers, or did they run a thicker anti-roll bar?

I currently have monroe adjustable rear dampers, but they are knackered and need replacing, so i was thinking rather than just throw on some crappy dampers, would it be worth spending a little extra and putting an MV6 setup on.

Sorry for the essay

Omega General Help / What size brakes?
« on: 15 July 2009, 13:47:19 »
I need to replace my front disc's, as i believe they are warped, causing steering wheel judder when braking.

I have been told that there are two sizes of front disc 296mm and 286mm.
My cars is a '98 2.5TD.

Now i have found some people selling discs that state they will fit all omega, both pre and post facelift.  Im getting confused with all of this, can someone clear it up for me?

This has probably been covered before, but what were the major differences?

The only things i can notice are the different grill and the climate controls.  Is there anything that im missing?

I am desperately trying to get hold of a pair of complete trailing arms (trailing arm, hub, bearing etc).

They will need to be in fairly good nick, i.e decent bushes and bearings

Im not fussed about the state of the handbrake shoes or discs as i have new parts waiting.

I hoping someone nearish to me will be breaking an omega and will be able to help me out and get me back on the road.

Im in the south Herts and east Essex regions, so if anyone within a reasonable distance can help it would be much apperciated.

Thanks

Omega Gallery / '98 Omega 2.5TD CD
« on: 12 May 2009, 22:34:19 »
Well i thought i would put up a thread in here to show you guys my current run about.

Well actually i thought i would start with my previous omega, a 2.0 GLS auto.  It was a beautiful car really good bodywork, and drove like a dream until i worked my magic on it  :-[

In between the omegas i had a cavalier Gsi, but i scrapped that not so long ago and replaced it with this beast

As you can see its a pretty standard 2.5TD.  Pretty shabby bodywork, but a nice tidy interior, so its not to bad a place to be.

Its got a few niggly issues with it, like a complete lack of handbrake, and a random EML when cold, but even so, in the 5 weeks ive had it ive racked up well over 2000 miles without too many problems, aside from a split leak off pipe.

I dont really have too many plans for it, as its only a run about, im hoping to upgrade to an MV6 later in the year.

Although im a bit tempted to get a chip from Mr TB, as ive heard so many good things

General Car Chat / Help finding an oof member
« on: 13 January 2010, 20:23:08 »
Hi guys,

recently someone put a thread up about a bargain omega that they had picked up (round about 200), but it had a smashed up drivers quarter panel.

I have tried searching for the thread without luck. Does anyone know who it was or have a link to the thread.

Cheers

General Car Chat / My Mig passed its MOT
« on: 31 October 2009, 14:34:47 »
Well yesterday evening the unthinkable happened and it actually passed!!  ;D

Not that it has been plain sailing, as last weekend i had a marathon session replacing a few bits and pieces.  The list of new parts

Replacement trailing arms both sides
Replacement rear springs
new dampers
New brakes all round
front wishbones

As a treat for sailing through i gave it a service today, so new air filter, fuel filter, oil filter and full oil change.  I still need to change the thermostat and do a full coolant flush to be set for the winter months, but im really pleased that after all the troubles ive had with it, its starting to get to the stage where everything is working correctly and its nice to drive.

I may even get it chipped now i knows its running nice  8-)

General Car Chat / What else can go wrong???
« on: 10 August 2009, 10:31:47 »
Im really struggling to enjoy ownership of my current mig.  Everything seems to be going wrong with it, and has been nothing but a pain since i bought it.

Since i got the car the handbrake has not worked.  When i took the rear disk off, i found that the backplate has rusted away, so the handbrake shoes cannot be secured. i ignored this problem while i sourced a new backplate and various fixings and springs from vauxhall, only to find out that i need to seperate the hub from the bearing to change it.  After hearing the problems that people have had, i decided to leave it.

Then the wishbone bushes started to perish, so i bought a pair of wishbones, only to find that i could not get the old ones off because everything is so rusty and seized.  So again, i put the job off.

On friday, returning from a week on holiday, the drivers side rear wheel decided to part company with the car, after snapping all 5 studs!  After a marathon 10 hour recover, i worked on the car the remainder of the weekend, to only have removed one of the studs.

So i decided that the best way to sort it would be to contact Omega Spares in Heathrow and get a pair of complete trailing arms and sort the rear end in one hit.

This has now been ruined, because Omega Spares just so happen to be shut until the 24th of August.

Then thinking i will just pop a wanted ad on the forum, i find that i cant post until i have 250 posts.

I really just want to scream and pull some hair out right now.  Im wondering how so much can be going aganst me with no sign of light at the end of the tunnel.

Sorry for the rant, i just needed to get some of that out before i loose it completely
