General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?
« on: 12 December 2016, 16:36:42 »
Bought a car, that is 200 miles away, unseen, from somebody I have never met.

What could possibly go wrong?

It will be fine. I've a friend who bought his last three cars the same way: two Jensens and a Ferrari. He's never lost a penny doing this.

Although I will acknowledge he might be the exception!

You could just use the car more often. Or fix the fault. The longest I've left mine was about 3weeks, and it was still on the button, although I wouldn't expect much more than that.

Of course it's a daily driver. There's no point in having a car you can't just get in, turn the key and drive to today's destination. If you can't rely on that, it's junk.

That is a great deal - as normally its about double that.

Only if you're likely to need five cars worth of antifreeze in the near future. Otherwise it's just more stuff to store.

Sod the bidders, it's still your car!

End the Omega auction and use the car until you know what you're doing with the BMW. That removes the urgency, and will enable you to make a better decision.

Never underestimate the stupidity of politicians.  ;)

Why limit that to politicians?

... and is prone to timing gear failure.  ...

even as late as when it was in a Sierra? I thought the fibre gear failure had been resolved ......  :-\

They didn't resolve it until they swapped to a chain for the later 2.4/2.9 versions. Although the weak oil pump/distributor hex drive remained.

Yeah i think the pinto 2,0 has 105hp and the cologne 2,3 has 114 hp. I am a bit in doubt since the power gain is so little. But the sound of the v6 is far superior to the pinto:) on the plus side i do have the whole car so hopefully wont need much parts. V6 exhaust seems to be in good shape. Also the v6 has power steering which i guess could be retrofitted to the pinto. Dont know much about fords however. I know the 2,0 pinto is a reliable engine. From what ive picked up the 2,3 cologne also seems to be pretty reliable but thirsty and somewhat lazy?

It's underpowered, thirsty, heavy, leaks oil like an Omega V6(although it is easier to fix!) and is prone to timing gear failure. It doesn't run on unleaded fuel without expensive hardened valve seats, which in my experience isn't a problem with Pintos.

I wouldn't use one as a swap.

Swapping a 2.0l for a 2.3 V6 is a lot of work for a very disappointing engine. The most noticable difference is that the fuel economy will be worse.

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / 3.0l and MANUAL gearbox
« on: 10 December 2016, 17:05:16 »
This is left over from a previous project.

3.0l engine, complete with wiring loom, ECU and key. It's exactly how the previous owner removed it from a driving MV6 saloon, and still has the plug leads, DIS, cambelt cover, plenum, throttle body, alternator, sump and starter motor in place. I don't have the multi-rams, bagpipes or MAF.

The manual gearbox has not been removed from the engine, so the flywheel and clutch assembly is still in place. I don't have the gearlever though.

I do have the complete propshaft.

I thought this was long gone, and I don't have room or any need for it.

£250 on collection from Rochester Kent.

MAF is worth considering too, especially if the car was trying to idle at the time it cut out.

Nick W has also written several times that some proper, rather than internet, diagnosis is required before you start buying and swapping parts.

My comments were meant to aid you in doing that diagnosis in an efficient manner.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: OBD port not working
« on: 09 December 2016, 17:12:59 »
I am probably missing a huge "obvious" point here  . . .but . . .if it was not OBD compliant  .  .why would

it have an OBD port?

The fourteen pin connector in the dashboard fusebox used for Tech2 diagnostics is an OBD spec connector. But it's only post 2001 cars that are OBD compliant.
