Omega General Help / Re: AR35 Autobox woes...
« on: 09 July 2016, 16:56:44 »
I think that's what happened yesterday. And why it was a bit low this morning. I stupidly filled it with the engine off. It had been a long day as my brother (who's ramp I was using) was meant to be helping me, but he had a couple of other urgent jobs to do on customer's cars, so left me to it. My missus is away for the week, and I was running really late, had to get home, get the dinner and get my daughter to guide camp, so I was rushed and forgot I needed the engine running when filling. I knew that too! Then it worked fine on the way home so I thought I was ok.

I wonder if I possibly finished the box off running it a bit low last night. Every other box I've had that's been low won't go into gear well, usually a delay. Never had one slip like that before.

It's certainly full now, as with it running I couldn't get anymore in.

Yes, Chris most certainly does have first dibs. But if he doesn't want it, I'd love to take it off your hands.

Thanks for the advice mate.

Yeah, yesterday I didn't, and when I rechecked it, it was low.

Today I did it with the engine running.

I filled it, warmed it up, went through all the selector positions, then undid the fill plug and topped it up until it dribbled out.

Then I took it for a quick spin, whacked it back on the ramp and checked it again.

Gawsh that drain bolt gets hot!

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / AR35 Wanted.
« on: 09 July 2016, 16:33:00 »
I've not got a high enough post could to post in the 'Items wanted' part of the forum. I know rules is rules, but I'm a bit desperate. I've scoured the interwebs and can't find one.

I use the car for work and will have to borrow the wife's, which will please her immensely.

If you can't move this for me, is there any chance of an admin posting for one on my behalf?

My AR35 gearbox is knackered, I need a used known good unit. It's for a 3.0 FL estate.

Thanks,
Tim

Omega General Help / AR35 Autobox woes...
« on: 09 July 2016, 16:17:22 »
Hello all,

I've realised I've not got enough posts to post in the items wanted, and this does include an item wanted. But first, I'll check I've not missed anything daft:

Gearbox was playing up 2/3 change, slipping a bit, not seeming to engage. So I replaced the solenoid. Changed filter.

Took it for a spin, seemed ok. But couldn't really test it properly under the conditions it would slip (hard acceleration in a 60/70 limit)

Went out last night, gave it a bit of a caning, changed from 2/3, slips like buggery. From then on, I have only 1st pulling correctly, 2 and 3 slip, can even get to 4th.

So I put it up on the ramp. Check the fluid. Bit low. Top it up, off the ramp, test drive. Still slips.

So I get it back on the ramp, drop the trans fluid out, change the filter and solenoid BACK to the originals in case it's them at fault, fluid back in, text drive. Still knackered.

I now think the box was already on it's way out and I've just finished it off. There was a lot of metallic paste on the sump magnet when I first drained it, then today there was more, so I suspect something has just worn away. I suspect brake bands. But not being an expert I dunno.

So, has anyone got a known to be good AR35 box I can buy off them? I really want to keep this car, it has LPG and gets me to work and back.

I saw Shackeng was asking about one, but may have got one from Sarek, and tigers_gonads said he had one. I'm hoping he might still have it and be willing to sell it to me!

Any advice and help will be gratefully received.

TIA

Tim

Meetings, gatherings, parties etc / Re: Blackbushe?
« on: 30 June 2016, 21:59:24 »
Sounds like a plan.

So, pardon my stupidity, what's ABS?

I will warn you though, I'm quite rubbish at meets, I'm always working or busy doing stuff!

And I wouldn't ever bring the Miggy to a meet as it's a bit of a heap now, I'd bring one of my others.

I'm guessing you have something else to play in as you are a member of BADCC?

Me and the family meet up with few other car guys who are from Bracknell sometimes, and they are very NOT cliquey. We usually meet at the New Leathern Bottle near Warfield and then go for a spin, or not. One has a Dodge Charger, one a 2nd gen Escort, another has a hot rod and a Mustang comes along sometimes too. We are always looking for others to join us.

If you want to PM me a mobile number, I will text you next time we arrange a meet if you wanted to come along?

And I have no idea why when I typed 'Reading' in my last post, it changed to 'Reading' !!!!

I'm a member of the BADCC too, I never go to any meets either! I never seem to have time.

Shame it was Cliquey, I've found it a little so in the past, but car clubs seem to get those types.

I'll chat to anyone me.

I'm in Reading too, Woosehill.

No offence taken. I cleaned the breathers when I fitted them, then again about 6m later, but they were still pretty clean.

The last gaskets I fitted were Vauxhall ones and they lasted about a year before I started getting that burned oil smell again, so I put up with it for ages, then took the covers off to see what had happened and they had gone really brittle in places. (the breathers were a bit gunky this time, but not blocked like the first time)

I was skint, so I took the gaskets out cleaned them up and slathered some hermetite red all over the place and they've been ok for another last year or so, but now it's smelling again.

I'd expect genuine ones to last longer than that surely? 2 years with pretty clean breathers?

Thanks chaps, all good advice.

It is a 2000 on a W.

Yes, I am a bit strange, just like my car lol.

Ok. I will work through all those tips, starting with the easiest first.

Don't you just hate intermittent faults though, I can never guarantee that it will misbehave at any certain time! Although to be fair if it's going to do it, it's when I come off the A404m at Marlow and sit in the traffic on the off slip for 20 mins. (when I'm trapped by traffic if it DID overheat!)

I'll let you know what I discover. Hoping its that sensor or the connection. I need to change my cam cover gaskets again in the next couple of months, so will have the inlet stuff off for that.

Thanks again!

Tim

Ever come across this before?

Usually when sitting in traffic, but also sometimes after a fast run, followed by some driving at 30mph, my temp gauge creeps up until it pegs out and the red light comes on.

First few times it happened I'd pull over, heart pounding and switch off.

I wasn't convinced it was actually overheating, as the fans don't come on.

So I wondered if it was the fans, but the fans do work, they often kick in and I see the needle drop as it should.

I started carrying an infrared thermometer and when it happens, I'll pop the bonnet and take the temp of the top hose. Which will be 90-95. Not far off what it is 'normally'.

But upon experimenting, I've found that when the needle pegs out at max, all I have to do is stop (I'm usually in traffic) pop it in neutral (it's auto) turn the engine off, then start her up straight away and the needle will instantly go back to the 'normal' temp position, and stay there. The fans stay off.

Makes me wonder if it's not actually getting too hot, but an ECU is getting confused and turning off resets it.

The needle literally drops 10 degrees in a few seconds. No way it would cool that quick if it was overheating.

Cooling system is in good order, all fluid levels as they should be.

Anyone ever experienced this? Any ideas?

Cheers,
Tim

Hmm, I got hit up the back a couple of years back in my old Veccy, same old thing, the guy and his 'mechanic' mate turn up at my house. They were both about 12 years old. Mechanic mate insists the damage to my car is superficial and why don't I just sell them the car for £350 as that was what he thought it worth.

I couldn't open the boot as it was so twisted, so I couldn't show him what I had seen and that was the boot aperture shoved in where the bumper had been pushed in and sprung back out. Tried to tell him that, and he informed me that as he was a mechanic, he knew best. He got a bit arsy, so I told him to sling his hook, to which he replied that he was going to 'burn your house down with your wife and kids inside'

So I told him that should that happen, I'd know just who to blame. And he replied 'Ha, well, you don't know who the f*ck I am'

Then, being such a tough guy, him and the driver ran off down the road when I went over to thump him for being a muppet. Then they screeched off in his car.

So, before that I was considering not going through the insurance as he was a young lad and it would have made his insurance sky high. After that, I called my insurers, informed them, then called the old bill who came over and went and had a chat with him, but couldn't find the mechanic guy as driver denied he had anyone with him.

So the insurers wrote the Veccy off, gave me a grand for it, I bought it back as a Cat C or D write off for 70 quid (can't remember which), sold it as such to a guy off ebay for £300. So I did ok out of that. Luckily my 'new' Omega I'd bought already and was just about to sell the Veccy anyway (for about 400 quid)!

And then I made it my mission to find the mechanic guy, which I did, through a bit of Facebook after finding he was a friend of a friend of a girl my wife works with, Googling, then getting a dodgy Reading chap I know to use his network of contacts to find his address.

And there I've left it as I know exactly who he is, after he found it so amusing that I didn't.

Omega General Help / Re: Coolant Drip - Help - UPDATE - Pics now !
« on: 25 September 2013, 23:08:29 »
I had a leak similar to yours. HBV was also bone dry. It was where the hose from the matrix connected to it. It would leak a while after I stopped, leading to drips like you describe. I think it was leaking so slowly the heat was evaporating the coolant off the HBV and it was only when it cooled down enough did it work its way down.

HBV gets my vote. It was clear as day when I took it off as I could see where the coolant had constantly dried.

Rather then trying to guess the cause, take it off and check it, then you can start eliminating stuff.
