General Discussion Area / Volvo world record
« on: 20 May 2019, 20:16:29 »
I attended the attempt to break the current world record for the greatest number of parading Volvos back at the end of March.Unfortunately the word has come through that Guinness World Records have denied the claim due to some of the cars having too great a gap to the next car ahead/behind  and therefore not classed as a continuous parade :'( The organisers of the attempt have opened a poll on facebook to gauge interest/intent of owners with regard to re-staging the attempt next year.So hopefully this will go ahead and be more successful this time around. Many thousands of pounds were raised by the first attempt for the breast cancer charity so the first try was not entirely in vain and a second attempt such raise even more funds for a worthwhile cause :y

General Discussion Area / Hermes
« on: 08 May 2019, 07:50:09 »
Ordered an item off e-bay at the weekend and opted for click and collect option to my local Argos store.Got in last night after a day out to find I'd received an e-mail from Hermes to say the parcel had been delivered, but I'd had no notification text to say it was at the store.Went on Hermes site to check tracking of parcel and according to them they tried delivering it yesterday afternoon but I wasn't in :o Well of course I wasn't in I don't live in the Argos store where they allegedly delivered it :D Anyway they are supposedly going to try to deliver it again today, will be interesting to see what happens this time :-X

Omega General Help / Ocassional stalling
« on: 01 May 2019, 07:33:02 »
Tickover when up to temperature on my 3L is 500revs or just a tad below, however once in a while[there's no set pattern of time/distance/conditions]when slowing down to a stop at traffic lights/roundabouts the revs will drop further momentarily before recovering and sometimes it doesn't recover and stalls taking two or three attempts to get it to re-start which can make things a bit of a lottery when driving out and about.I'm thinking possible IACV problem or throttle body needing a clean? do these sound feasible?Any other ideas?

General Car Chat / Emissions
« on: 27 April 2019, 08:06:04 »
According to a BBC news article Ford are now involved in a criminal probe into their emissions testing. This doesn't involve the use of a "cheat" device but rather their computer modelling and other testing procedures.Ford are co-operating with U.S. authorities on the matter, obviously at this point results of the probe are unknown and it will be some time before they are and Ford cannot say-or predict-how this will materially affect them if indeed it does affect them at all.

General Discussion Area / Gender neutral-again!
« on: 24 April 2019, 07:55:27 »
Ships in particular have always traditionally been referred to as "she",but now the Scottish Maritime Museum have put a stop to this[signs have been vandalised with the word She scratched out]and their staff now have to refer to ships as "it" as that's gender neutral and therefore shouldn't cause anyone to be offended.

General Discussion Area / Day out
« on: 18 April 2019, 07:37:18 »
Step granddaughter had an appointment yesterday in Leeds, the appointment was at 5.15 and I was asked if I'd take her,so in order not to hit Leeds roundabout rush hour I suggested a day out there which we[me,her, her partner and their two kids] duly did.I'd never actually been any further into Leeds than the train station before so it was quite interesting to see all the many fine old buildings housing the market and the arcades etc.On the car front this was the first time in above 4yrs that the Elite has ventured out past the boundaries of Scunny, travelling to Leeds and back [mainly motorway]at a steady 70mph cruise for the most part saw a return on the display screen[which going by the fuel gauge is not far out]of 33.8mpg,so I'm happy with that. All in all a good day out :y

General Discussion Area / Winter tyres needed?
« on: 13 April 2019, 13:38:52 »
No not a tyre thread as such.Race 1 of World Superbikes[from Assen] was due to start but was delayed by the weather, subsequently this cleared and after a while it was decided to stage it.No sooner were the bikes on the grid prior to warm up lap than it started banging it down with snow/sleet/hail :o Even if the snow doesn't settle the track will be wet so obviously slick tyres aren't an option but apparently the "wets" don't work below 5 degrees.A case for winter tyres? :D ;D ;D

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Speaker questions
« on: 13 April 2019, 12:35:16 »
Having tried-and failed-for some time to find a replacement Bose CCR2006 or a compatible NCDC unit it would seem I'm down to swapping in my Blaupunkt head unit and multi-changer.Obviously to do this I need to change the speakers, from the excellent guide on here I know the size of the door speakers, but what of the sub woofers in the rear shelf? Are these wired from the boot amp meaning that in bypassing this[as I'd have to do]I'd lose the use of these?Or are they wired separately and therefore need replacing like the door speakers? If the latter does anyone know what size they are?

General Discussion Area / Top bloke
« on: 11 April 2019, 09:06:50 »
Went to the local Ford dealers yesterday. As I was nearing the door to the service reception/parts dept area I was aware that someone behind me was also heading that way. When I got to the door I opened it and as is my habit in such circumstances held it open and stood holding it for the other person to enter first,I was totally surprised to see this other person was none other than Guy Martin! He thanked me as he passed[all too many people don't even bother to do this these days]and I followed him in.Some others already inside-and some of the staff]recognized him and engaged him in conversation-some only knew him from his TV shows while others like myself know of him for his motorcycle racing-and although he was in his "scruffs" so obviously working he took the time to chat/share a joke or two. There were no airs and graces about him a totally down to earth bloke extremely friendly and polite to everyone,a truly top bloke :y :y :y

General Discussion Area / Insurance prices
« on: 11 April 2019, 08:52:47 »
Do they make them up as they go along? Although I don't do much mileage these days-the V70 is insured for 4,000mls and the Elite for 1,000mls per year and neither car comes close to those limits-I keep getting the urge to buy a third car ??? ??? this would be in addition to rather than in place of.So fairly random choices checked on a comparison site for cost of insurance all using same criteria[2,000mls per year kept on road at night with o ncd]and I get these: 2002 Omega 3.2 Elite valued at £800=£337. 2001 Omega 2.2dti CD valued at £800=£365 and 2004 Jaguar XJ6 3.0 Sovereign valued at £3,000=£301 :o I can understand the high prices due to 0 ncd but how does a 2.2 diesel end up dearer than a 3.2? and how do both end up dearer than a much more expensive-and more powerful-Jaguar end up cheaper than either?

General Car Chat / Rare sight indeed
« on: 21 March 2019, 16:27:06 »
Just getting home from dog walking and heard a fairly throaty exhaust note followed very shortly after by the sight of a K reg Marcos Mantis :o It looked to be in absolutely mint condition in a dark bronze colour  :y :y Not very common when new,I can't recall the last time I actually saw one even at a classic car show.

General Car Chat / Classic Omegas?
« on: 20 March 2019, 17:35:44 »
I see there are at present 3 Omegas listed in the classic car section of flea bay.Ones a 3.2 saloon that according to the write up has been subject of a write off in the past and has had a shed load of money spent on it in the last year and a half.Another saloon[2.5 Elite-facelift]looks to have been very well looked after and is low mileage and the third a '96 2.5TD Elite estate again a low mileage example[but expensive none the less] can't do links and I have no connection to any of these cars.

Omega General Help / Starting oddity
« on: 19 March 2019, 17:08:53 »
When the engine is cold I can start the car easily even if stood beside it reaching in through the open door/widow[I sometimes do this when I'm tinkering]when it's warm turning the key does nothing,no click/whirr/other noise unless I press the brake pedal in which case it starts as quickly as it does when cold. When it's hot it won't start at all[again no noises]unless I put it in neutral when it starts just as quickly as in the other scenarios.Any ideas what could be causing this?

General Discussion Area / Insane price
« on: 19 March 2019, 08:29:34 »
Described as "The Lewis Hamilton" of the pigeon racing world Armando has sold for a record price of $1.4m :o :o :o Apparently at 5yrs old its racing career is over and has been bought for breeding purposes. The previous record price was 340,000 which still seems an insane price for a pigeon.Anyway i'm off into town with a net to bag a few pigeons and knock them out on the bay of e,after all I'd not be the first to flog a few fakes on there :D :-X

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Bose or not?
« on: 17 March 2019, 19:58:24 »
Still looking for a Bose CCR2006 I've seen some on e-bay[most discounted as the sellers say they haven't the code]but there seems to be at least two numbers for these units one of which is 09146057 then it says Type CCR2006[E] and in thick black letters UU7.Is there any way from seeing such numbers whether or not any given unit is Bose or non-Bose?
