Omega General Help / Wiper linkage
« on: 29 January 2022, 22:41:07 »
Is there anything I can do do recondition the wiper linkage and motor, beyond potential strip, clean and regrease? Can I replace the balljoints or similar? It's 180-odd k old and while it's off I might as well...

Omega General Help / Doodah under the OS wing
« on: 24 January 2022, 13:16:38 »
So. In my mission to reduce the ex plod to a pile of dust and holes, I'm stripping the wheelarch.

Theres a Mystery Box (how exciting) up behind the OS headlight, with a great big whacking plug on it. I think this means it is Important and Not To Be Fiddled With.

At the moment I'm cross with it, the two screws holding the bracket on are rusted solid and I've broken my screwdriver bit trying to undo one of them (Halfords Professional, fact fans).

Question is... What is it, what does it do... And do I need it? I'm guessing yes...

Omega General Help / Lower headlight bolts
« on: 19 January 2022, 21:02:29 »
The bolts that hold the bottom of the headlights... standard size - ie can I grab a pair from the local fittings place?

Failing that  anyone got a pair to post ASAP? Not for me... I have slightly bigger things to think about....

General Car Chat / I know a chap selling a TD estate...

https://www.gumtree.com/p/vauxhall/vauxhall-omega-2.5-td-gls-estate-low-miles-long-mot-rare-car-/1419113832

The chap I bought my new daily 406 from is now selling this. Ironically I was after one about six months ago, but now I don't have space...

I didn't want to put it in the For Sale section as it isn't mine, what I will say is he's a lovely bloke and my 406 is exactly as he described. If anyone is interested I'm sure I can facilitate a viewing...

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Horn relay wire colours
« on: 13 August 2021, 14:43:47 »
The restoration is in progress. Looking to fit siren and tap into the horn relay wiring as instructed by the, er, instructions.

Before I let all of the smoke out of the wires... Horn relay terminals are as follows.

85 - brown and white
86 - red
87 - brown
30 - brown and white.

Standard horn relay, green 4 pin. Shows 85-86 as the trigger, so far so normal. Does that make the brown/white the ground?

Then shows 87 open, 30 closed, which I hope means 87 is live in, and 30 is to the horns?

At the moment I have everything apart so it's not going to be on fire yet... Just want to check before I start connecting!

Omega General Help / Space in ashtray slot...
« on: 26 July 2021, 16:08:21 »
Another question regarding my planned plod resto.

If i wanted to fit a DIN sized unit radio instead of the ashtray would it fit? I have a spare ashtray cover that I'm quite happy to bugger about cutting, just wondering how much space there is behind. Don't mind cutting edge out the ashtray mechanism, I literally never use the cig lighter and Im not precious about my spare trim bits.

Evening all!

As my Silly Boy Project of a restored police car is coming together - I've got myself a Cleartone CM9000 radio to put in. (Same as in Josh's, fact fans).

I should say at this point that noone really knows what it had in service so I'm using a bit of artistic licence and fitting things that are age-appropriate. And when the rivet counters complain there's plenty of space to lock them in the boot.

Anyway. I don't know much (anything) about electronics. It is a full setup with head unit, and the control box.

Is there a way to connect it so it controls a regular (hidden) head unit and/or phone kit? I would like it if I pressed a button on the Cleartone and it made the hidden one perform an action ie USB/ phone/ volume and play through the speakers and whatnot.

It's all voodoo to me...

General Discussion Area / Idiocy and customer service.
« on: 14 May 2021, 18:14:16 »
So. Booked an eye appointment online. Relatively short notice but it looked like the only slot available so I thought I was in luck. Right the way through the process... Showed as available, got the email confirmation.

Make my merry way down to the local town of brilliance and delight (or what has in my absence become the set of a low-budget zombie apocalypse film)... Literally ran out of things to look at so went in a little bit earlier than my appointment.

"I'm here for my contact lens check" "they've all been cancelled" "have they now" "yes, the optician is ill" "well, it let me book it" "didn't you get a phone call? They've called everyone."

..."yes. Actually I did get a phone call telling me it was cancelled. I just thought I'd give up an hour of my time to come here today, park up, cross my fingers that the car is still there and not alight... walk through the desolate wasteland that used to be the high street... To have this scintillating exchange. I find it the best use of my time, never mind the multiple jobs I could be doing while the weather holds. For oppss sake".

Suffice to say I will be changing opticians. I can't remember the last time they did anything other than make a complete Horlicks of anything I needed...

Omega General Help / Camber before toe?
« on: 09 March 2021, 12:45:31 »
Age before beauty... "I" before the "E"...

Anyway. After MrsGK came home and declared she didn't want to drive Zeke as he was too twitchy and she didn't want to have to tell me she'd crashed him (very reasonable approach, cares more about the car than herself or anyone in her way)... took him to a local 4-wheel-alignment place, list of desired settings in hand. Unlike my last attempt at getting someone to do it properly (previous rant on here, indeed) - bloke was very keen to please, listened to what I had to say and has apparently tried his little socks off.

He has told me that the toe adjusters are almost seized, he's heated them and got them back very close to where they should be but can't adjust them fully - it's at 0-05 or thereabouts. Front camber is sitting around 1-40, I wanted 1-10 but he reckons if he adjusts the camber now then there's not enough adjustment to get the toe back into spec and it'll be worse than before.

I don't mind spending on new parts to get it spot on, the car's cost me about a million pounds over the years anyway. I just want to know that he isn't spinning me a line, and that if I get the new parts (and a load of grease) that he will be able to adjust it further?

Thoughts chaps and chapettes? :D

General Car Chat / Honda OAP mobile, advice and guidance?
« on: 04 March 2021, 14:20:40 »
So I've inherited a 2004 Civic 1.6 (Executive, oh yeah). It's a lovely motor, just been stood for about 8 months or so, needs a couple of bits for MOT before I can start to use it as my work wagon (leather, fuel economy, etc - perfect). It's suspected to have a blocked cat as the exhaust is VERY hot - that's getting looked at over the weekend.

However it's also got an unusual idle issue, in that when it's stone cold it sits perfectly stable at 1000rpm or so. As soon as the temperature gauge starts to move, all hell breaks loose. It starts revving up to 2500rpm, then sits there for a few seconds, drops to 1400rpm, then fluctuates between 1400 and 2200rpm or thereabouts, for a few seconds at a time.

If I turn the air con on it will sit at whereever it was when it kicked in, at least for a minute, no fluctuating, then starts revving itself again.

I've stripped and cleaned the IACV and EGR and their connections, and the throttle body, to no avail.

I've plugged it in and there's no codes and no historic codes. So far it's done maybe 40 miles since a new battery but I'd expect the ECU to have forgotten anything earlier than that.

I've also tried putting various graphs on the Torque app on my phone but I have literally no clue what I'd be looking for there.

My things to look at so far (and also suggested by a couple of other people) - blocked cat, throwing the lambda reading out as it gets warm, making the car go mad (but no codes?); physical idle control, like the idle screw on a carb, to set the base idle; coolant temp sensor misbehaving; air leak (I've checked and can't see any obvious missing or split pipes) ; faulty EGR or IACV.

Any further thoughts before I start throwing parts at it in a main dealer fashion? :D

Omega General Help / Four pot wishbones - any difference to V6?
« on: 21 February 2021, 20:55:15 »
Got a 2.0 to do the wishbones on tomorrow. Is the procedure any different to doing the V6, IE bolt access or location?

I can use my northern monkey arms to tighten everything on the ground on mine but just want to know what I'm lined up for :D
