General Car Chat / GK's whinging again...
« on: 12 February 2020, 18:50:35 »
I apologise if this is hard to read, I just need a rant. MrsGK has buggered off to the gym because she's sick of me throwing my toys out of the pram and the dog's too deaf to listen...

Took the ex-plod and the vRS for four-wheel alignment. A place that have seen the Omegas before and set them up absolutely spot on to the recommended settings. Rang yesterday and had them both booked in for the morning, intending to drop one or both off and head off to the parents' for a cheeky cuppa.

Apparently they've forgotten how good they were... It started well -  MrsGK took the vRS to the door for 8. Youth wipes away his milk moustache and points at the car. "That isn't booked in".
I pull up next to him in Zeke - "that one is booked in, if I get that done I'll see how busy we are for when to do the vRS." "Right" says I. "These are the settings. I accept there was a coffee spilling incident en route, but you can still read them. The ones I have asterisked are absolutely vital". "Yup, that's fine" said the youth,. "It'll be done in about an hour so head up just after 9".

Head back there. Zeke still very much not off the ramp. Stick my head in and find a completely different member of staff under the front end, spanner in hand. Youth nowhere to be seen. Presumably they'd taken him outside and sacrificed him to the gods of Vlogging and Clearasil. "How's it going?" "It's nearly done, people forget how long it takes to adjust these old cars cos there's more joints so it's knocking me back for the day".
Not my problem thinks I, I told them exactly what it was and how awkward I knew it would be. "How close have you got to the settings I gave you?" "..." "..." "...what settings?" "The ones I passed to your young chap, he assured me you'd get it bob on" "I haven't got them, I've just been getting them into the green, the computer tells me it's right".

GK at this point gives the chap a Paddington Bear stare. "I even told him, Omegas are fussy and the manufacturers are way off". "Well, you've spilt coffee all over the list of settings so I couldn't read them anyway".

Now, I know I spot liars for a living, but it wasn't hard to catch him out regarding knowing the settings were there. "Why did you think I bothered scribbling them down then?" "Er, er, he never told me that you wanted them". "No, you're right. I like to write out lists of numbers for fun. Tomorrow I've got a new phone book coming, I can pretend that I'm Carol Vorderman" is what I nearly said. What I actually said was "Let's have a look at how close you are then". "Look, it's green, it's fine". "But I need the camber at 1'10'' "It's close enough, it's green".

Cue apoplexy. "No, fella. Over 3 degrees is not close enough to 1 degree 10. Unless you're trying to drum up business and get me in for front tyres every 2k miles". At which point his attitude became smug... "Well. That's as much adjustment as I can get on the camber. Look, there's no way to adjust it".

"...let me think for a minute... have you undone the bolts on the strut where it meets the hub, and adjusted the wheel from there?"... Smug look wiped off PDQ. "Oh, is that how you do it?" "Yes. Yes it is." He duly sets to and starts actually doing the adjustments.

Now, I not only tell people off and drive like a maniac, I also do a bit of detailing and a bit of mechanicing, mainly for myself and friends. And I bloody well hate it when someone is looking over me and telling me how to do it. But I gave him over an hour to not be an ignoramus, and then he... ignored... a crucial bit of information. And I was polite and friendly throughout. So I don't feel bad about sticking my head him and telling him what to do with the car... because I'm paying good money and I expect it done to the standard I agreed beforehand.

As it happens, he decided 1 degree 30 was as close as he could get it, and I was on the verge of shouting at him going and telling MrsGK so she could shout at him, she's much scarier than me. So we negotiated a suitably low cost for the work that he had done, on the grounds of it being sufficient to keep the car out of the scenery for the time being. It'll be needing tyres before long at which point I'll go somewhere where the staff are blessed with the power of sight.

I then decided I wasn't going to let him anywhere near the vRS. Took it for a quick tracking check at my favourite tyre fitters (who don't do 4-wheel, sadly) - and they discovered that the front spring was snapped at the very bottom. Need the car for tomorrow and I lack the skills, patience and skills to change the spring on it, because it was designed by an imbecile. So that's in the garage and I'm taking a courtesy car instead... Bloody old cars. Who'd have them?

Omega General Help / Centre console bolts
« on: 07 February 2020, 19:38:40 »
In the many months since I stripped the entire car out, I've forgotten which safe place I've put the bolts that hold the centre console in, in.

What size and type are they? Can I pop to the local fixings place and get a dozen wee bolts and washers in, say, 8mm head? I can't for the life of me think what they look like.

I've also found two torx-headed bolts about an inch and a half long. I think they're something to do with the centre armrest but again, can't remember.

If only I'd listened to my inner voice saying "make sure you label each bag and put it safe"...

Omega General Help / Sill cover replacement
« on: 02 February 2020, 14:07:11 »
Slowly whittling down the pile of bits laid around the kitchen... when the plod went in for bodywork, my welding man removed the sill covers. However, I've never removed sill covers before, so have no idea how they came off.

I've got 2 sills and two long rubber trims that appear to fit on perfectly along one lip. There's a wee plug at one end - does this go to the rear. I'm assuming rubber trim on first, then clip the covers into the plastic sides - is it a push- or a slide-fit? Then pop the trims on each end and replace the plugs... easy?

I don't like plastic things that I can break...

Finally got round to swapping for the correct V6 springs so my others are surplus to requirements.

Set of four 30mm lowering springs, Eibach Prokit. To fit a four-pot, not a V6, unless you want a silly five-inch drop, down at the front...!

The fronts have done about 4500 miles. There is surface rust, but nothing major, and they are in excellent overall nick. The rears are BRAND NEW (EXCITEMENT!) because the ones already fitted to my car are barely aged at all and I don't see the need to swap them.

Photos available if you PM me a number or email address.

£100 posted, but open to sensible offers.

General Car Chat / Droplinks. What a silly design.
« on: 01 February 2020, 18:30:44 »
I'm finally getting round to a spring change. The front droplinks were changed, along with a lot of other bits, about 4k miles and 2.5 years ago. I fitted everything, bit of grease hither and thither as appropriate. Everything's had a good brush and Plusgas. Does the droplink want to come free on the nearside? Does it bugger.

I'm considering, once I've Dremel'd the old nut off and replaced it... covering the joint in grease and somehow capping it. Or perhaps, spraying a load of spray-wrap over each end, the theory being to waterproof it, and then when I do want to remove them in future, it's a quick peel-off and hopefully it will be less seized. Any other ideas?

Surely there's a better design. At least the replacement parts have flats so I can put some pressure on each side.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Wig-wag wiring
« on: 28 January 2020, 11:08:23 »
Restoring the ex-plod to something close to job spec, as there's a couple of shows I'd like to take it to. I've got a couple of Woodway EL13W alternating flash relays, and the associated wiring diagrams. So far I've got a lovely set up in the front (with the all important removable masters for road use), it works perfectly with two test bulbs.

Only thing is, when I connect it into the main beam wiring behind each light, and connect it all together - both main beam bulbs illuminate fully. Then they both flash a little brighter as the relay fires them. Presumably this is because the circuit is fully complete.

I've spliced into the loom (where it was originally removed from) - white wire each side. I've then reconnected the white wires, because otherwise (I think) I'll have no normal main beam at all. I've currently got the positive feed into the flasher relay coming through an 87 relay, if that can be altered to make things work properly?

Flasher unit has four connections -

12v + POSITIVE FEED IN
0v GND
A+  TO LH BULB
B+ TO RH BULB.

All fuses in the passenger compartment are intact and there's no sign of them having been previously cut.

There is the remains of a connection coming out of the yellow/white wire, behind the headlamp switch. There was a tiny bit of matching wire soldered into the RH main beam feed that I've now cut and spliced into myself... but I don't just want to connect it up willy nilly, I think the smoke will escape from the wires...

Omega General Help / Nose-down on Eibach springs
« on: 21 January 2020, 17:31:30 »
I'm slowly working on Zeke (ex-plod, 3.2 FL saloon), going through all the jobs I need to do. I fitted B4s and Eibach -30mm springs a couple of years ago. Along with, IIRC, new top mounts (and a lot of other bits, to make my credit card melt). Ever since fitting, he's always sat nose down, more than seems normal. It gets worse when I hoist my fat backside in there...

Is there anything I should be looking at to correct this? I did get the alignment all done and all the spring seating checked but don't mind having it redone as necessary (my list is long enough...!).

FWIW the MV6 is on B6s and Maxtrac (I think) springs but maintains its level stance.

General Discussion Area / Apparently I'm banned...?
« on: 05 January 2020, 13:35:59 »
So. While passing the time babysitting some poor misunderstood person at hospital last night, once said person was safely catching some Zs, I thought I'd pop on here on my mobile. Only to get a message telling me that I'm banned?!

I mean, I know I'm hardly Member of the Year but it's a bit harsh... how do I fix it? It's the same now on mobile but desktop is fine?

General Car Chat / Anyone know anything about Tigras?
« on: 18 November 2019, 16:37:12 »
Our winter biffabout car is a 2006 Tigra. Twintop. 1.4. 16 valve (golly!). It's ridiculous. Especially on lowering springs (ride is as comfortable as being stabbed). And purple alloys (because I am nine years old).

Anyhow. It's been parked up for a few months, upon returning to the road, with fresh battery and service... the boot and roof have gone on strike. It usually beeps to say "I'm opening" or "I'm closing" or "move your fat head out of the way". But there's nothing, no beep, no movement. Fuses have been checked and are fine. Boot opens manually and closes again... before I start removing random switches and fiddling, any ideas? Google points mainly to cars that are still beeping but not moving.
