Omega General Help / Re: Auto Box Photo

valve bodys, plates of alloy with hydraulic oil ways machined into them. The solenoids, activated by the ecu, open and close the oil ways which activate gears clutches and stuff that sit behind the valve bodys.... afaik. So the pic only shows about a 3rd of the story. And my description probably is about a 5th of all the other stuff that goes on. Torque converters, no idea how that works, none what so ever. Seem a cut away of one, still no idea. Would love to pull a box to bits one day and see how it works, just not mine please god, finger crossed, touch wood.

I've taken auto boxes apart and it is fascinating. Never got them back together again mind....

Omega General Help / Auto gearbox fault codes on N-reg 2.5
« on: 10 June 2009, 18:14:10 »
Hello -can anybody tell me which pins to bridge for doing the paperclip test on an auto gearbox on an N-reg 2.5? I have the fault codes for the AR35 gearbox as used on a Senator B, and I assume that they will be the same for the variant of the AR35 used on the Omega. But I can't find any information on which pins to bridge in the diagnostic socket. Can anybody help? Thanks!

Omega General Help / Re: Where is the Output speed sensor unit
« on: 10 January 2009, 14:44:44 »
I think the output speed sensor is on to of the gearbox, right at the back end near the output shaft, and at the 1pm position looking backwards. Held in with a 10mm (hex size) bolt.

If you look back to about June this year on this section of the forum you will find my thread seeking help about this same problem. I fixed it myself and posted photos on the thread. My job took a fair amount of time because a) I was (and still am) a newbie to Omegas b) my car has LPG conversion with wires everywhere getting in the way c) etc etc etc.

There is also a thread about it on the Technical how-to section of this forum with pics.

It seems that, if a head gasket is going to fail, albeit rare, it's usually on the passenger bank, at the rear...

It seems that you are right!

I wonder if it is for the same reason that C30SE engines suffer head gasket failure at about 100,000 miles? The gasket degrades, lets water through where it shouldn't, and the rear of the head then suffers lack of cooling as the water flow has been short-circuited. On both  my cars the two affected cylinders are those furthest away from the water pump (I think).

Of course they are both green too, which doesn't help. ;D

Mine went at 150 000 No 6 cylinder/piston head was beautifull & clean. :y

The 2.5 car is 125,000 miles, the 3.0 one 165,000. My blue 2.5 saloon is at 145,000 and still going strong (touches wood...).

What I find interesting is that both cars are green, both are Elite estates, both have low compressions on two adjacent cylinders, with the rest good, and on both cars the low cylinders are the two rear LH ones.
One is 3.0 (LPG) and the other 2.5.

I have a blue saloon 2.5 as my daily car which is running OK at the moment (fingers crossed).

Maybe this just affects green estates?  ;D ;D ;D

I have a red 2.5 CD estate too, as of last night. It does run, rather rough, but I dare not lift the bonnet.....

On this car, the 2.5, it's not LPG running lean as it hasn't got it!

Oh well. I'm learning to love these V6s.  ::)

Omega General Help / Low compressions again
« on: 04 November 2008, 20:18:29 »
OK, different car, but it looks like V6 Omegas make a habit of this.

2.5 Elite estate, S-reg, 142k miles, running lumpy and lacking power. No water in oil. Compression test shows 225 psi on all cylinders RH side, 225 on LH front, 160 & 140 on the two rear LH pots.

Plugholes on RH side had a bit of oil in them, those on LH side dry as a bone. I was hoping that maybe it was just misfires due to oil, but obviously not.

So this is not dissimilar to my R-reg 3.0 Elite estate + LPG, albeit not quite as bad.

I'm not really asking for any help, just passing comment really, in the hope that someone might say "Yes, they all do that!". Then at least I might know what to do -scrap it most likely!

Omega General Help / Re: Quick MoT question - handbrake
« on: 01 November 2008, 09:52:06 »
Oh these handbrakes. It's such a faff it's no wonder they hardly ever work properly. People just can't be bothered!

Same with fuel filters. "Where's that then?" This is after having owned the offending car for ten years (it's just conked out due to fuel starvation).  ::)

Omega General Help / Re: Door Rust.
« on: 29 October 2008, 00:26:19 »
There's only one way to treat rust, and that is to cut it out. However I'm experimenting with a paint called Epoxy Mastic 1-2-1 which is  two-pack epoxy resin-type paint. I goes off as hard as rock and is sued as a  primer/underseal/chassis paint. I am hoping that it will hold back the rust on my window/door edge, until such time as a proper repair can be done.

Omega General Help / Re: 2.2 or V6

I'm a relative newbie to Omegas but I've just driven my 2.5 CDX saloon, which I bought a month ago,  500 miles to Bristol and back. I found it smooth, relaxing, and reasonably economical, if the display can be believed -33.5 mpg @ mostly 80-90mph cruising on the motorway. In fact so relaxing was the drive that I can't really remember much about it. I do remember the windscreen wipers packing up though, thanks to the balljoint at one end of the mechanism falling to bits.

I also have had a 3.0 Elite estate since June but I can't really comment on that as the engine has been rather troublesome. My own fault -I bought a car with no tax or MOT. It is awaiting further major work. In the brief few weeks when it appeared to be running properly it seemed very, very lively. I can't wait to get it back on the road, whereas the 2.5 is functional but unexciting. I can see why there are so many of them around. A very sensible choice for the family man who regularly drives longer distances.

I have a 2.5 Elite estate arriving shortly, but as that car also only has five cylinders I won't be able to offer an opinion until and if I restore it to a 6-pot!

I can't comment on the 4 pot Omegas as I have not driven any.

OMG, I've just looked through all two million pages of the PDF engine rebuild guide on this site and it looks pretty daunting. Think I need to stick to the straight sixes!

As my gearbox is almost duff I'm planning to take the whole engine and gearbox out so that I can work on it in comfort in the workshop, and not have to lean over the engine bay all the time.
Anyway, you never know, maybe the head(s) don't need to come off, but I know that is probably just wishful thinking.

 :-[ :-[ :-[

I still have! Go on forever, so nobody ever wants one ;D ;D

You could always do as Graham C/Omegatoy did .... and put a straight 6 in!!! A C30SE would suffice ... you don't need a 3.6 Lotus.  ;) ;) ;) :y

Yes, it's something I've thought of already, especially as I have a workshop with oh, about six C30SE engines lying around -all with head gaskets gone!
That's what I thought! ;D You had an 12v engine mountain outside in the yard when I paid you a visit. ;D ;D ;D ;D
