What are the 2.2 diesel Omegas like?
« on: 19 August 2015, 14:53:39 »

I got myself interested in Dan282's car that was for sale recently. Never really considered a 2.2 before.

I know they only come in manual form. Do they come in CDX/Elite flavours as well? Cruise is a must.

What are they like for overall MPG? I used to get 23 mpg at an average speed of 23 mph on my V6 on my stop start and twisty rural roads.

Is there a practical chip for them too? I know the 2.5 BMW based unit could be chipped to good effect ala Omegatoy.

I presume they would have no trouble towing up to 1500Kg ?

I presume they have a heavy clutch but do the engines/gearboxes have any quirks like the V6 petrol engines. e.g oil coolers (do they have an oil cooler !) timing belts/chains that need changing frequently, cam covers that leak, breathers that don't.

Like all diesels, needs very regular oil changes.  Biggest issue is the fuel pump, which effectively writes the car off.

Yep they do

Varies depending on how you drive it and the conditions. I can have a look back and see what I got out of mine if you need figures

Is there a practical chip for them too? I know the 2.5 BMW based unit could be chipped to good effect ala Omegatoy.

Most are re hashed versions of Vectra versions (Some Vectra's share practically the same engine), there is a potential for good power increases but gut the CAT first.

I presume they would have no trouble towing up to 1500Kg ?

Well, ours happily towed a 1200Kg caravan loaded with all the usual gas bottles, junk etc etc

I presume they have a heavy clutch but do the engines/gearboxes have any quirks like the V6 petrol engines. e.g oil coolers (do they have an oil cooler !) timing belts/chains that need changing frequently, cam covers that leak, breathers that don't.

Clutch not too bad (hydraulic), gearbox is an R25-R28 with a DMF - pretty similar setup to a V6 Omega. Biggest issues with this model are the diesel pump EDC (the management unit) failing and the harmonic damper crank pulley disintegrating which is usually down to the auto tensioner failing at some point previously.

As above really.

Had the harmonic dampener go, annoying but not expensive or hard to do.

The pump issue is usually the electronics which can be changed in situ and are then very reliable by all counts.

I have using mine for work this week which is 22 miles each way, some traffic some lanes and it is averaging just on 40mpg without trying to hard!

Its the hills around my way that drags the ave mpg down.

Clutch is light and progressive and no issue at all.

Hummmm I'd want more from a small lump like that, a 406 HDI can easily do 50+

Lots of 6 pot diesels can do near 40 mpg as well.

My 2.2 does 28mpg on gas, giving me around 55mpg cost on the wallet. That's over a 25 mile commute or stop/start traffic.

That sort of MPG is about right.  On the right kind of run you may touch 50mpg.

Remember the Omega is a much heavier, larger car than the shitbox 406.  Like the 2.2 petrol, a bit underpowered for getting moving around town, which will hurt economy.

Thing is, the DTi makes a good tow vehicle by virtue of it's torque figures - it's only 10Nm off a 3.2 IIRC - and it's kerb weight

My DTi does 44mpg on a mix of A roads, 48mpg on the motorway without trying.

It's a cut above the 2.2 petrol. Much nicer to drive, and the torque helps.

I bought mine for peanuts, and I've spent less than £200/£300 on it over 16,000 miles, that includes a new clutch!

Mine is nearing 180k. Going strong, no plans to get rid :y

Suppose everyone would have a different view on one. I had an 03 for all of a month. Horrible thing. Apart from being an omega it didn't have anything going for it. I did have a 2.5td before it. Its slow, high on tax sounds like a taxi, not that great on fuel and had an annoying flat spot around 2k (all the dti seem to have this but was more noticeable in the omega). But everyone's view would be different but as you asked....
