Do NOT follow any links for XP or Vista Antivirus as they are just ways of getting your CC details.

Another vote for AVG here. They do have rare problems with updates but generally runs much better than Norton and Mcaffee.

Another vote for Avast...don't even know its running, aside from the odd warning of dodgy emails and the updates.

I do keep checking with other ones just incase its missed something - but nowt so far!

Have used Norton, McAfee & NOD - all good but tend to slow pc down
AVG free is also good.
Have been using Avast for a while now - low overhead (no impact on pc speed) - brilliant.  Also tried it on my test machine on some "captive" viruses - got em all!

Go to http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html for a copy.

Forget Norton, McFees OK but not spot on, Tried Avast recently ok, but couldn,t find real nasties.

AVG ver 8 free seems good, but found a free newbie that's really good, SuperAntiVirus, found stuff all the other cleaners could not find.

AVG better than Avast I think..But the point is all of the virus scanner software need to slow down your PC more or less as its scans all the activity behind (including AVG)..And theres no solution for that.. :-/

ps : and slowing down is proportional to amount of checks behind the scene..Unless the software is written by some idiots

Bit of care needed here I think. As far as I can make out SuperAntiVirus is good, but it's an 'on demand' spyware scanner.

AVG and Avaast are both realtime anti virus programmes. These are different to spyware scanners and a properly secured system should have both.

Other spyware scanners include
Ad Aware
And
Spybot S&D

[edit]I should probably add - before I get clipped by TB - that a properly secured system isn't on the net to start with...  ::)[/edit]

One additional issue is that none of the virus scanners are % 100 trustable..

So from time to time I use other free net online scanners..

(that you download an activex)

like Kaspersky, Bitdefender and etc

Use Bitdefender and quite happy with it :)

Also consider using Spybot-search and destroy, which is free to download and works well.

Not the cheapest but AV protection doesn't get much better than Kaspersky - also protects against malware and spyware etc. :y

AVG is one of the best if you are a standard user. I must say that the latest version is not the best one - too many gadgets and it slows down system. Internet link protection is advised to be switched off if you want to use internet without any hassle.
Previous version was very good and light - even installed on old computers.

agreed ..previous version was more lightweight..The newer version has worm and spyware protection built inside but stresses the system..

Performance wise, they are all pretty similar if configured the same.  The 'branded' ones currently seem to default to scan all files.

I use McAfee generally on all my machines here.  Taken it off my Tech2 laptop recently as 1) I've run out of licences, 2) its a very old laptop (2000) with limited memory, and the recent updates have pushed it over its capabilities.  The tech2 laptop never gets connected to any networks, nor does it have removable media drives, so its fairly safe from that point of view.
