tuning box
« on: 14 July 2006, 14:20:14 »

Hi,

Just bought a Tuning box from www.hhtuning.co.uk  for 2.5td.

It has a fly lead that connects to one of the pins of the plug to the MAF.  It says connect to pin 6 but test the voltage first. It says voltage should be 0.3-0.4 or 1.5-2volts when idle and 3-4 volts when revved up.  Well pin 6 is at .03volt and doesn't move and have tested all the other ones and apart form the 2 cables that are 5 volts and 12 volts they are all sat at about 0.03volts including pin 6.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

hi,

http://www.hhtuning.co.uk/tdstuning.htm  this is the one.  Apparently the fly lead is just to tell the box that the engine is changing speed.

Thanks

Hmmmm....not sure about this one.

The TD unit measures the airflow and adds fuel accordingly, I assume it connects to the diesel pump as well.

The MAF signal is normaly a 0-5V signal (from memory) on these so at idle you would expect it to be low....

Do any of them change when you rev it and what year is the car?

Hi,

Looks like I've found it now.  The instructions say pin 6, I phoned Germany and the chap there said Pin 6 for Range Rover & BMW but Pin 2 for Vauxhall (Opel).  So off I go expecting to see Pin 2 change with Revving but........NO.  So again check all others and now it looks like it is Pin 3.  It is sat at 1 volt at idle and about 4-4.5 at full revs - not sure why i didn't see it first time, maybe the negative probe was not tight!!??.

Thanks for all the consideration and I will post as to the effectiveness of these boxes.

Cheers

Hi,

Well my mate has installed the Tuning Box.  Has only tried the car around his area no big runs but his comments by text was "A bit mental now with loads of Grunt".  He's in work tomorrow so a long haul up the A13.  Will fill you in with what it's like tomorrow.  The box cost £278 which seems good value at the moment.

Thanks

Not sure your box will do anything else than increasing low end torque as no matter how you change the signal of the airflow meter the fuelling will be only as much as the ECU allows so basically you will not get a single bhp out of it. There are much more effective ways to tune your TD that will cost you less money. I could help if you tell me at what emission level the engine is certified.

Hi,

Don't know what the emissions are although it did pass it's MOT on Friday!!  The update so far:

The Car now has a ridiculous amount of power (not sure if it's increased bhp??)! (This is all second hand info. as i have sold the car to my mate a couple of months ago).

However, the reason we bought the box was because we thought the car was underpowered due to it seeming to hunt (the Gearbox that is) around the 2500rpm when on motorway/dual carriageway and seemed to take an age to change up.  Now the box is on it changes a lot better BUT... now seems to slip.  When youput your foot down the engine revs straight up to about 3-4000rpm and then changes with big Clunk!!  Now I have a feeling there is something going on witth the box but What.  My mate took it to a GearBox Specialist (before he put the tuning box on) who went out for a ride with him plugged in his box of tricks and told him "there's nowt wrong with the box, no fault codes it's just that the engine is a little underpowered".

Now is it time to start thinking about putting an AR35 box on?  If so what's the likely cost - and do you do AR35 GEARBOX PARTIES!!!!!!!!

Cheers

Fortunately its doing much more than that, it connects to the fuel pump setup and monitors the MAF.....it doesn't modify the MAF reading.

It sounds like a slipping clutch or possibly a low oil level (easy to check, see the Tech section)

If its slipping then its worth sourcing a replacement but, as always, start with the easy cheap stuff first.

could easy be bud !! but slipping could be from the EXTRA power you now have could be too much for the box  ;)

hi,

Thanks for that - any idea where a good source of AR35boxes, cheap of course, can be had?  Or is it just a case of look around?

Cheers

The one I wanted to re-con is no good. Gearbox has been driven dry and as a result is uneconomical to rebuildl.

You should be able to get a decent AR35 for anything from £50 up. Depends where you are, but if you are within 100 miles of Nottingham I know the guy I get mine from is tops for boxes. He only sells an autobox if he has personally driven the car for a few weeks. So, you know that the box works. With breakers it is a pure 50/50 chance, and considering the work invloved, I wouldn't do that.

Let me know if you want me to see what he has got.

Ronnie,

I am in Essex and yes please can you find out what he's got and I'll pass the info onto my mate.  Just need to get it put on then.......................??  I'm in one of those situations where you sell the car to a mate and everything goes wrong with it inthe first few weeks - I feel a right pratt!! (Is that one t or two?)

Thanks
