berserkerboy in need of advice
« on: 27 February 2007, 15:17:28 »

Hi there everyone!

Am looking for a bit of advice.

I am considering buying a 2.5Td on a T plate with 130k on the clock. The owner has just told me that the car has started to misbehave this morning by cutting out at junctions and roundabouts. Nice of him to be honest before I gave him the money!!

The car is okay at higher revs. I realise that this problem could be any number of things but am wondering if there is a well known cause for this on these cars?

Any comments would be welcome as the owner has offered to drop the price. The actual amount has still to be agreed.

Also on a more general theme how do you rate these BMW engines in the manual version. Somebody told me that they are very expensive to do things like the clutch. I have seen people advertising autos with galactic mileages though, so they can't be all bad?

Our Mr McBurger is the man to answer better on the diesel questions, but I will do what I can...

It has to be said that the cutting out sounds like an air leak, although being a diesel things are a bit different.

130k is not too much for one of these engines but the longevity depends entirely on how it has been serviced previously.
Timing chains are longer lived than belts but require very regular changes (ideally every 3k).

Personally I don't like the lumps and are not hugely more economical than a manual 2.5 petrol (which will average late 30's on a run driven sensibly).

While they are more economical at the pump, the repair costs are scary!

As for the manaul box, it was never very popular. It just seemed that the auto box was well suited to the more sedate properties of the engine (unless chipped like Omegatoy's ;))

I'd have thought a chain would've lasted longer than 3k  ;)  ;D  :y  :y

LB66 hasn't made clear that the 3k changes is for the oil.  The service interval is 4.5k, and very few have been maintain even to this level.

I'm not a fan of the BMW diesel, way overated imho (probably because it is BMW).  Failures tend to be hugely expensive, and its not uncommon to find a hole in the block plugged with a conrod....

Not particularly economical around town, but decent on long motorway runs.

In standard form, gutless.

He would need to drop the price!!! cos there is a possibility of a very expensive repair to sort that particular problem out as its to do with the fly by wire throttle arrangement!! However I do know of a cheap fix that works on 4 out of 5 cars!!! agree with the coments on here you must change te oil at max mileage of 4.5k on both of ours they get done every 3.5 unless they have been doing very short trips in which case i drop it to 2.5k just for my own piece of mind
Agre with the other comments here when i first got mine i thought there was something wrtong with it cos it was sooo slllooooow compared to me other cars ;D however when you release the true potential in the engine its a lot of fun to drive and is a very capable motor which surprises many!!!

Thanks very much everybody for your comments and advice. I will be viewing the car on Tuesday to make a decision. Much will depend on the final agreed price. Omegatoy, I may be in touch to find out the fix you mention. Just out of interest, how much would you suggest the price is dropped by to cover this problem? Also, about how much will it cost me to get the car chipped if I buy it?
Cheers.

By the way, I asked a clutch specialist how expensive a clutch replacement would be. Good news, although the clutch is a couple of hundred quid it is only a few hours job.

if its a pump gone then you can either buy secondhand and take a chance it is all right or a new one is in the region of 1300 quid!!!!
your choice buddy but without knowing how much he is asking for it i cant help you with the reduction?

Just to let everyone know. I bought the car with the known fault: Cutting out when I dipped the clutch at low revs and a bit reluctant to restart, great fun at roundabouts! Other than that the car ran fine.

Well, when I got the engine cover off I could see the leakback pipes had corroded and had leaked diesel into 2 of the injector wells.

I replaced the pipes, a bit fiddley. Gave the engine an oil and filter change, changed the fuel filter, filling it with Diesel Magic to clean the injectors. Fitted a new air filter.

And....now the car runs great! This is a T reg estate having done 128k. All for a grand!! Wow!!! ;D

I am going to have a look at the breather tubes tomorrow as I think they may be a bit clogged
