Omega Autobox - today's easy repair!
« on: 09 March 2007, 18:10:54 »

Some may recall my posts, about when everytime I came to a stop, the autobox would "jerk" the whole car, like it was throwing itself into 1st gear too fiercely.. it wasn't good.

Well, I have just resolved the problem in ten minutes, and now it's as smooth as a baby's bum, the problem has totally gone away.

Basically, just checked fluid level. Jacked up drivers side, placed bowl under grearbox and undid the filler. Whoooooosh! Lots of fluid came out, which obviously it shouldn't have done. Once it had stopped trickling, I squeeezed best part of a 1 litre bottle in there, and then lowered the car to level ground, so it would drain off to the correct level and settle.

It turns out, that some muppet had previously put 1+ litres too much in the box! The problem's now totally gone away, I'm really chuffed  ;D

If it was old fluid, that behaviour is expected - the oil volume increases as it breaks down....

Did you take the plug out with the engine NOT running?  If so, then fluid should run out.  Reason, fluid level is checked with engine running, after taking the lever from P to 1 several times, therefore the valve body, torque converter, pump cooler pipes n' all take up the fluid from the sump.. So when checked the level should only be level at the bottom of the filler plug...  if not running, fluid settles to the sump and runs out when you wizz the plug out..

Hope this helps..

I trust you followed the How to....i.e. engine warm and running....

Note, as oil breaks down its volume tends to increase......its a sign the oil does need changing if the level is to high.

I took mine to get the oil changed.  They refused.  Said it was filled for life and the dealer needs to go in with Tech2 to do something.  I'm assuming that at 152K the oil isn't great, but I don't want to cause problems.

Yeah, well, can't really get it changed if they refuse the work.  :-?  Tough finding a decent repair shop.  >:(

I'd have to double check, but I don't think there is a level sensor (if there was surely it would flag up g/box on MID?), so how the hell is a Tech2 going to help....  ....I love dealers  >:(

Wasn't about a level sensor, something about putting it into service mode?!?  They wanted me to go to the dealer, but I'm worried I'll come out with more problems than when I go in if I go to a dealer.

Muppets.

I spoke to Vx about this and they said it was to make sure the temperature was correct when they checked the level.  Does anyone know if they are full of s%*t?
