That oil cooler is off !!!
« on: 10 March 2007, 15:56:50 »

Okay some of you will know ive had a v6 vectra for about 3 months now and posted a few times about removing oil cooler ( without bending pipes )

The projec has been delayed due to being involved in selecting people for redundancy and a more pressing rover turbo project.

But its back to the veccy today and the cooler is out - and boy what a mess. Most definately failed  :y :y

So im now at the point of cleaning and rebuilding. With fingers crossed it starts (smoothly)

So whats the most effective method of cleaning - should i just remove all the gunk that i can physically and proceed to rebuild - allowing the many coolant and oil changes i plan to do almost daily when i get it started to clear it out.....

Or is there another more sensible method like removing as many parts and hand cleaning rather than the coolant flush process and oil change process churning the goo out ?

Thanks

Markie

ps ive removed and replaced the thermostat, removed and cleaned header tank and all radiator hoses but theres a tremendous amount of goo in the radiator - i do have a brand new one should i just fit it or ( seeing as its physically in good nick) try flushing?

Only fit the new rad, once the rest of the system is as clean as you can get it, or the new one could get shagged too ;D

Yeah!  save the best 'til last..  It will be nice to have the piece of mind, new rad' totally un polluted, there's no telling what all the gunk n' stuff might do to the silver solder..  theoretically nothing , but why chance it?

Having only done 2 of these oil coolers one on an 3litre Omega and the other on  3litre calibra, on both of these to clean the system out we poured a bottle of bleach in the cooling system topped up with water, ran engine for twenty mins, then drained the entire water system and flushed it through with clean water a couple of times again running for twenty mins, the system on both cars was clear of all oily gunk then and on the Omega it actually got the digital climate cntrol functioning properly again,
lot of people will shout and scream you cant put bleach in but its worked for us!!!

Just had a flash back to the 80's, we had used to use bleach to flush the shite out of Fords, replenish with anti freeze 50% and add an egg cup of brake fluid to protect the hoses and to lubricate the water pump bearing...  Never had this problem with my beetles though  ;D ;D ;D ;D

3litre calibra,
Omegatoy

3.0 Calibra? Take it that was a custom job I thought they only ever put the 2.5 V6 in that?

As Omegatoy says try some bleach in there Markie, should have done it on TheBoys project, that was chucking out oil in the coolant for days!

Remember which nice man (or nut job,  to anyone NOT terminally afflicted with 6 cylinderitis) you're talking to....
