oil filler  cap and filler nozzle, has a light brown sludge on it,

Its normal and nothing to worry about i think. Probably condensation in the oil due to the filler cap is so far away from the engine so the oil cools down. Short journeys make the problem worse if i got it right. Just wipe it of and forget about it:)

Normal if you are doing mainly short runs.
Clean it off and give the breathers a clean while you're at it.
It's just condensation mixing with oil spray, a good long run will give the engine a chance to get hot enough to drive the moisture off but doing short journeys it builds up in the filler neck and causes the mayonnaise you are seeing.

Yep it's just normal mayonaisse, wipe it off & put it on your chips or salad

vauxhalls are renown for this, just take it for a good run once a week and that should help

i had the mintest and i mean mintest y regger cdx low miler v6 a few years ago that i got from arnold clark who had sold it to the old boy. i only did short trips and i knew the header tank looked like new with clean strong a/f,the oil was mint too and when some complete maniac looked at it come sale time he noticed the sludge in the cap and started b/s ing me about h/g's. i sold the car to a proper bloke once i had cleaned it out but tbh its very off putting for buyers to see that. V6 3.2 gsi vectras do it the same. :-?

a quick fix on the vectra 3.2 which also works on a mig is to remove oil filler neck and file it in the garage. then refit the cap directly to the cam cover. keep a funnel handy for topping up the oil and the jobs a good un

What shape are you filing it into ? 
If like me you have got an estate then the filler neck fits into the spare wheel well(along with the wheel)then when you do decide to top up you don't have to scavenge through all the other 'spares that you know you will need one day'

i was assuming that eveyone elses garage looks like mine would if i could get the door open 
seriously though, i use a 1ltr oil can with the bottom cut off for re filling/topping up. castrol ones fit the filler neck quite nicely.
