True, but look at the money his spent on other items, still a cheap motor for someone.

Sounds like he just wants his space back, reckon if someone waves real notes in front of his face (and the wifes watching) prob get it a lot cheaper.

No good to me as I dont have access to a trailer, plus Her in doors will go 'headless chicken mode' if I buy another Meggy!

I suspect the idiot has been lax with oil changes, worn the chains, and they are knackered.  To change the chains is a head off and sump off job (silly BMW design).  That would explain the non starting.  Obviously, if the chains have badly slipped, not sure about the valves.

An engine transplant isn't that difficult on these, which may well be the best option.

Yup. My 1st donor engine had knackered chains (so it turned out) and caused me all the grief.

If LFF64 and I can change a diesel engine over in a (short) day, it really can't be that hard

If you have access to an engine hoist, it might be surprising how easy it is to swap engines instead of many repairs - or to take the engine out for repair! Modern cars are even faster since a lot of stuff simply unclips since they made it easy to put it in there in the factory.
