The CDR2005 was a terrible unit. I would take the opportunity to replace it (and the old speakers) with something better / more modern.
Wont cost the earth and will make a big difference.

Thanks Albs. Problem is, I don't know where to start. Any suggestions for a replacement head unit?

9 times out of 10 with all the later Omega Has is its the amp chip that fails.  Not worth replacing, just replace the entire HU with either another (crap) 2005 or a (better, but many now have shagged lasers) CCR2006.

Either are plug and play with each other, but you do need the security code from the donor HU as you may be prompted to enter it...

Yes, I think a replacement is in order. :y

Oddly enough. I picked up SWMBO from the station a while ago. She put her bags on the back seat and slammed the door shut, upon which I got a loud blast of sound from the speakers (I'd left the volume knob high), so could be a connection somewhere.

Would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, methinks. :(

Um, tbh, no. I know very little about them, but my ears know if it sounds good.  ;D

If it was wiring, that would only impact 1 speaker, as its non Bose.  Could be dry joints on the board I suppose.

it does sound that way doesnt it.
if its the chip itself or even just a bad solder joint its worth opening the unit up and spending an evening in it ( if you can or want to !. i know i would but not everybody does !)
depending also on  your soldering skills or determination i would at least price up a replacement chip to try.

But its a CDR2005, so not worth spending more than 30s on ;D. They always sounded awful.

How much longer will there be AM & FM signals anyway  :-\
You may as well rip out the wax disc radio gram and stick in something modern
I did when I got my Omega
touch screen with micro SD memory card for MP3s and a "bucket avoidance" rear camera for reversing  :P

Whatever you buy make sure its DAB radio. It made the old radio we used to listen to redundant several years ago, but many people havent realised yet.  :y

You could do it cheaper
facia £10 + 2DIN Bluetooth 7 Inch Touch Screen £23
add a loom adaptor and rear view camera and you can use screen mirroring from your phone

I have similar fitted to my 53 plate CDX
still working after 5 years of daily use ,for all the naysayers  >:D

Out of interest what did you fit and did it work with the steering wheel controls.
