In other words....pull the thin white pin out a little enough to be able to pull the white sleeve out aswell.. then squeeze the two black tabs in(can be seen on pic 1) and then remove switch while standing on your head  ;D ;D

Went out to car today and started it, drove it about 2miles to local supermarket and switched off.  Came back out switched it on, the Engine light (not the spanner one) stayed on. The error code is the two I had before P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit No Signal (04) - Not present and P1700 - SVS request via CAN (00) - Not present.

The camshaft was changed out a week or so with a genuine one. Even with these errors the gearbox changed up and down with no problems.  Would the crank sensor breaking down cause the codes and not it's own?

Thought my luck wouldn't last.  Went to Eurocarparts yesterday and ended up with 5ltrs of Dexron 3 fluid for the price of £5.
Thanks for any help.

Tip for those with a petrol mower ....When you have finished your last cut of the year,Leave mower ticking over and turn off the petrol and let it run out of petrol, therefore the carb is now empty ...the fuel in the bowl degrades and it puts like a coating on the jets,so when you start it next year it runs badly with reving up and down  :y
